Please don't use Comma ATF...it's changes into petrol when hot...and petrol doesn't lubricate.
Thes boxes do change from second to third a bit hard...mine does the same, I bought a Renault 9 automatic in red (705) recently

It would have been a terrible waste for it to get scrapped - there's a big wodge of bills and service history from the previous long term owner who took the car to the same garage every year, and by the look of it, just paid to have everything sorted out that they advised needed doing. The only thing neglected it seems was the cambelt. There's a receipt in 2014 for the car being recovered back to her garage, the top end of the engine rebuilt (with new valves and seals etc) then new cambelt and pump. This bill alone was over £500. She obviously liked the car!

Yes, Peter said they were from a 9 or 11. I'm not even sure what the correct ones look like, though these ones suit it perfectly so will be staying
It would be nice to get hold of the parcel shelf and interior light (which appears to have been removed to attempt to replace the broken ariel). I can get free carriage through work so would just need someone to chuck them in a box, and I can send a parcel label.
Have also got a decent JVC CD player promised to me (the radio in the Clio is missing) by my sister who is upgrading to an AUX type in her car.

It's very dark and very wet outside now but little Nicole is tucked up in the dry. Warms the old heartstrings!

    What a heartening little thread.

This car came so close to bring weighed in! If you look closely at the first picture of it on this thread, you will notice there is already a washing machine in the back of it.

By the way, the wheel trims were not in the car when I got it. They are from a Renault 11 that got weighed in around 20 years ago. Had kept them all this time, having never had a home for them. Despite their aftermarket appearance they are genuine Renault ones, albeit 10 years older than the car they are now on.

Many thanks to BeEp for being a top bloke and a GR8 seller, wud use again.
Had an easy drive down through Norfolk in 'Nicole' the newest car I've ever owned.
Feels very good on the road with no untoward noises (though the lack of temperature gauge is somewhat disconcerting). The brakes felt a bit wooden to start with but got better with use.
I've cleaned the interior and door shuts and got it better still. There's no major rust anywhere which I am pleased about.
In my eyes the Mk1 Clio is one of the last of the nicely styled small cars before they became blobby and fugly.

Typically, up until I realised that I could do with one, there were front valances appearing from time to time on eBay. Not this week though!
I'm thinking of buying pattern wings and using them to repair the originals - my experience of pattern body panels suggests that making them fit right will be harder than making the old ones good again.
Once the car is stripped right down, I intend to roll the shell over to inspect and repair the underside - the thought of doing it on my back should ensure I get some kind of spit or rollover frame together to make it a less unpleasant prospect!

After removing the rear bumper, I continued peeling away pop riveted "repair" pieces and chipping away at the filler today.

    (

The inner parts on the lower rear quarters and rear valance have been bodged in the same style as the outers. This will all be removed at some point, and started again with sheet steel and welding instead of pop rivets and wob!
I could do with some pics of what it should all look like before I get stuck in to make sure it all looks right when done.

The front bumper and lower spoiler type thing were removed next to reveal very crispy wings and edges of the front valance where the wings attach.

I could probably repair the valance, but it looks like I could do with a pair of wings.

    Good points:
    - used to be owned by Autoshite legend Purplebargeken
    - has been garaged most of its life, I believe.
    - Bodywork and interior in good condition for age (mainly - see below)
    - new(ish) radiator
    - very reliable and a joy to drive. Accelerates fast and cruises comfortably and quietly on the motorway
    - loads of service history, bills, etc.
    - CVT

    Bad points:
    - MOT has expired. It passed with no advisories last time but the exhaust is now blowing so I expect that will need to be sorted
    - Tyres are showing their age
    - Some clumsy woman drove into the front corner while trying to park her ridiculous "utility vehicle". It's been repaired to make it all fine for an MOT, but it's a bit of a bodge
    - Battery doesn't hold charge for more than about a day after being fully charged
    - CVT

With not a great deal of work, this could be a really nice car. It's served me well. I bought it on AS so am offering it here first.

    About time I updated this.

I had a go at the paint. 'Had a go' is being incredibly complementary. As I've already mentioned, I managed to scrape the peeling lacquer off without (much) further damage. I sprayed a few coats on, but on a very windy day-as I'd pretty thoroughly masked the car up, in the road, I persevered, with the inevitable result of a streaky finish caused by spraying so close so as the wind didn't blow it all away. It's better, but not by much.

I put a set of tyres on. The fronts were for four years old, and the rears eight. Kuhmo tyres. I took the (original) trims off in case the tyre fitters decided to remove them with a hammer or something, and I've left them off. I like black steels.

My stereo (with USB, because I can't abide the radio), fitted. I think the cage has been in more cars than [insert non-PC simile here].

The cigar lighter was working all along. It was my USB charger that wasn't. The inoperative reverse light was just a bulb which isn't hadn't been changed because you need to open the boot to do so.

There was another issue with dashboard-related electronicals; half the backlighting didn't work, so you couldn't see the speedo at all at night.

After some dismantling and a handful of bulbs which costs pennies (and the local factor gave me a bulk discount because I bought 10! 11/10, will shop again), the issue was resolved, but not before fixing the broken bits left by a previous owner.

All I did was glue in some nuts in place of the broken plastic bits the screws thread into, and used long machine screws instead of self-tappers, but for some reason that small repair was incredibly satisfying.

It's had a basic service-oil and filter not pictured, because the sump plug refused to budge the day I did the other bits. When it did, a mere 1.25 litres came out (capacity 3.5l).

    Bonus giffer-bodge shot:

The aforementioned stereo had consequences. The original speakers obviously objected to continual, full-volume Depeche Mode, and gave up within less than a day.

The only two speakers are in the back, just behind the doors. The doors have no wiring at all-there's no central locking, the windows and mirrors are manual.

The boot lock remains inoperative. The part is NLA from Citroen, so I've wangled the mechanism so as the rod is reachable from inside the car.

I've been saving a few bits up before posting this, so as not to post a series of 'changed a wiper blade today #builtnotbought #mechanic #madskills' type posts, and in the meantime have decided to get rid of the AX.

It's as I bought it, plus new tyres, a service, and new speakers. And a dealer sticker and AS sticker. The appendages are still on, and the car will come with the a-frame. £350, Folkestone, Kent.

Burnside reacted to nigel bickle in Anyone near Portland next Monday? Espero, innit!
Ok, so I don’t tend to do collection threads here, (just not me).

However, this coming Monday I’m off, by train, to Portland in Dorset to collect this

An Espero 1.8 auto. Mot’d a year ago, totally unused since ( I’m repeatedly told)
So, on face value a simple jump start, book MOT, drive back..‘‘tis a Daewoo - they always start, right?

Now, I’m increasingly beginning to feel the Vendor is hiding something. When asked specifics he suddenly gets ‘ vague’, yet is anal on detail about timings etc.

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that it won’t start. He tells me they haven’t even tried, in a year. Frankly, I’m doubtful.

So, I’m going equipped, battery, direct fuel squirter, tyre pump, tape, , ties, tools etc- & have just ordered up a new fuel pump ( tank fitted from above) as they seem a ‘ weak point’ on cars left standing.

I wondered if there’s anyone local, who, if needed, can suck through their teeth and look studious? Or provide a willing jump start, etc?

Be nice to think there’s a friendly face, local, if needed

    Ta, muchly.

This one deserves its own thread I think.

As posted in News 24, I collected it from bramz on Tuesday (he's a very pleasant chap, BUY WIV CONFIDENCE). Stopped off at the co-op for a beer and bleary eyed noticed this inadvertent photo opp.

Once home I evicted the 19 from the garage, pausing for a bit of yellow fog light loveliness.

Yesterday I worked from home, and once all that boring job shite was out the way I spent a few hours giving the 11 a rinse, and treating the plastics to about 5 quids worth of Autoglym Trim Gel. It wasn't filthy or anything, but it's just something I like to do to see how good/bad a car is.

The trim has come up well, although could probably do with another go. It really is a nice, genuine, low mileage car (46,600 miles), with hardly any rust. I've had a brief look, and the only areas to speak of are by the passenger door hinge, some peeling of the underseal on the front OS sill where it's probably been jacked up incorrectly, and some light surface stuff on suspension bits 'n' bobs. I can't see any evidence of welding either.

For the most part it has been owned from new by a gifferette in Cornwall. I did a street view of her house and it's a bungalow with a garage attached, and the door is painted the same colour as the car. Ah bless! The fact it's attached to the house must have helped its survival, as opposed to being kept in a shitty damp lockup somewhere.

The 'never been smoked in' cliche is true here.

I love this seat design, complete with corduroy covering. They are actually quite comfortable too, and have a tilt function that I haven't yet managed to adjust, so the driving position is a laid back affair. I'll probably just leave it as is.

Some interesting details include the sun visors that fit flush with the roof line/top of A-pillar.

Dashboard is an interesting non-reflective matt effort (and is mintola, pretty much like the rest of the interior).

Brake pedal rubber with the Renner badge.

Lah-de-dah electric windows that work, and corduroy door card.

It's early days, but I can see myself becoming smitten. Apart from an occasionally clunky shift up to to 3rd, and a few grumbles from the front end, I can't see it needing much. I'll change the ATF (Renomatic D2 which is still available) and do an oil change, but it's clearly been a well maintained car. As bona fide old chod goes it's perfectly usable, and my plan was to use it all winter, but it's really too good for that once the salt gets chucked down.

Incidentally, the colour is probably divisive, but in real life it really suits it. One of those rare things where photos don't do it justice IMO.

It will live indoors, but my garage isn't the best in winter as it can get a bit damp. Better than outside I suppose.
