That actually doesn't look quite as abysmal as I'd imagined. Maybe there's time yet for my teenage daydreams to become reality...

Think I might have snapped a late P100 in that same Turkish scrappy:

Also a down-at-heel Taunus with the same quad-light nose lurking in the street:

My Dad had around the same time a similar experience with his Mk4 Cortina. I was only barely a year old then so I have no memories of it and my Dad never took any pictures. It was a 77/78 Red 4dr 1.6 base/L spec possibly. He only had it less than a year. The rust was pretty bad at around 7/8 years old. Sills were already welded and every panel bar the roof was rusty.

Highlights of ownership included a split floorpan along the gearbox tunnel that had to be welded up as was letting water in. Bootlid had to be replaced with a brown one from the local breakers after the bootlock fell through due to rust. Passenger front door fell off one night due to a rotton door post so had to be tied on till it was welded. Rear windows had to be propped up with wood due to rust.

But the worst thing was one Friday night my Dad was on his way home and stopped off to fill the tank up. Brimmed up he set off home and halfway back he heard a thud an scrapping noise. He pulled over thinking it was the exhaust that had fell off only to find it was the fully brimmed tank that had parted company due to the straps failing!

After getting that fixed my Dad decided he had enough and traded it in for a 3yr old Vauxhall Chevette Estate. He hammed the crap out the Cortina the day he drove it back down the A5 to trade it in and was barely running on fumes when he got there. Thinking he seen the last of it as he drove away he was surprised a week later to find a neighbour up the street had brought it.

The neighbour then brought four doors in Metallic Blue to replace the rotten one's and then had the car resprayed Red and fitted a Black vinyl roof.

It was also stolen regular by persons unknown before being dumped back home sometimes with more Petrol than it left with.

Despite all that my Dad said it was a great car to drive and although it nearly bbq my Dad I wouldn't mind one myself if I had the chance.

My Brother brought my Auntie one of these in base flavour about 3 years ago. She sadly done her best to ruin the poor thing much to our annoyance including taking out a Corsa D with it but it just keeps going. Great little cars and parts are cheap and plentiful and at £30 you can't go wrong.

Yeah, I pondered that a few posts/pages back. I think the top priority is getting the fuelling right first, especially given that it's mostly under 60mph on the roads around here so having a relaxed cruise is less of an issue. Next on the list I think is air con, followed by a diff swap - but at least that will keep me busy for a while!

Probably the last drive of the year in this, as off of holiday tomorrow and doubt I'll tax it for November. So I went for a spin in the hills seeing as it was a lovely evening.

Plans for the winter are to replace the carbs with either a 4-barrel Edelbrock, or possibly fit fuel injection. Plus generally tidy up the engine bay, and get the cruise control working again. Mileage is a shade over 198k, so should hit 200k miles next year

You can do a full brake rebuild for under a ton, including calipers & master, nothing mechanical is expensive on them, it sounds like it`d be a worthwhile investment on yours now.

Drum-wise, the handbrake levers are a problem, they rust & seize, solid sometimes. You can take them out, attack the mating surfaces with a wire wheel, rotating them as you go, & smear them with copper grease after. Expect to do this every 2-4 years. Shoes make a huge difference to braking effort too, do them when you do the slave cylinders, as, despite yours looking new, the brake fluid will be well soaked in by now. They`re only about a tenner off the bay, as are a pair of slaves, & hoses can be had for about £15-20 a set (check the length of the fronts, they vary). Handbrake turns will then be a piece of cake.

This is one of my Mk2 Uno`s, the same setup, most small Fiats/ pre VW Seats of the last 30 years have been virtually identical:

I found a little bit of paperwork with the car, although most of the history, if it ever existed, is gone.  I have the owner's manual, a Direct Line Rescue letter from 2001 and a handwritten receipt from Southern Garages who appear to have sold the car new, from 1991 for a belt, which is probably the one which is still in its packaging in the boot to this day.

The V5 came through and confirmed I am the second owner from new, so the previous chap owned it from new in 1991 until earlier this year, quite remarkable.  He covered just over 47,000 miles in that time and appears to have looked after the car well.  I know it was a 'he' because his name and address are on the letter - I googled it and found one result from a deceased estates public notification, sadly he passed away in July this year.  Although I guessed before that this was probably why it was up for sale, it was quite sad to read the public record and see confirmation - for some reason I feel particularly responsible now for making sure this little car is preserved for future owners.  It definitely deserves to be kept going.

Something I have been meaning to get off my chest for some time.

I have had my CX vandalized, no nothing to do with the bonnet, look at the front wheel who would do this to another mans car!

Yesterday I managed to get it under cover, it was a tough job getting it out of a dip over a wooden sill but thanks to a winch given to me by alf892 a couple of years ago when I had no idea what I was going to use it for we got there.

Now together, Mrs6C came with cars but no camels! 1969 Triumph Herald Convertible, 1961 Herald 1200 coupe on the road and in daily use and Jaguar MK10, 1970 Herald 13/60 saloon and a Spitfire MK2 project cars.

We still have the white Herald 13/60 Convertible, but it is dismantled at the moment.

The Herald 1200 Coupe  requires some recommissioning but is basically a good running car.

The MK10 is with us but requires a lot of work to return to the road.

The Spitfire MK2 also requires a lot of work but we have most of the parts. The Spitfire was Mrs6C first car.

The brown Herald 13/60 saloon was always a big project but as Heralds are basically a big Meccano set it would have still been viable if her fathers blockwork garage wall had not fallen on it!

Nothing very exciting has happened car wise but stuff still happens.

My Vitesse has been in use last weekend, but now put away in storage.
    -----
The E30 BMW 325i is a delight to use since its replacement HT leads, smooth and powerful and still out and about.
    -----
Mercedes 200TE back in use with a fresh MOT, but still a heater that is either off or on max.
    -----
The 156 is now on station duty with Mrs6C. New wipers and a check this morning revealed it needed ½ litre of oil and a litre of antifreeze water, not too bad as I can't remember when it was last checked. I topped the windscreen washers that had been missing its top for sometime and found a bottle top to replace it.

Our 156 job list has become large and expensive with anti-roll bar bushes, cam belt, exhaust, ABS light on and service needed for MOT 6th Dec. After some discussion about how the bill was likely to be more than the value we decided to keep the car going and this morning I have booked it into the Northampton Alfa specialist 13th Nov. I hope the cam belt holds on as we have been playing cambelt roulette for some time now.
    ----
The Berlingo has been making a squeaking noise when the lights are put on, the alternator belt was changed as it needed it anyway but still squeaking, idlers and alternator were checked and nothing found. Answer - drivers headlight leveling is struggling and squeaking.
    ----
ZX has gone for MOT, I know most would get an instant result but the way it works for me is I drop it at my favourite garage they check it over, do any work and take it for MOT. The deal is it is not booked for any particular day and will get done when they are ready.
    ----
I bought a new Suaoki mini Jumper/power bank.

The first time I used it, it took 3 attempts at connection/disconnection before it would jump, but then started the ZX TD with enthusiasm. I have not had a flat battery to try it again.

I then placed it on the kitchen table and found the red flashing light had come on and the switch would not turn it off. I plugged in the mains charger and the flashing light went out. It has not come on, on its own again, but now if you switch on the flashing light it will not go out with plugging in the mains charger.

It was from Hong Kong to save £4 over British ones of the same brand, via ebay meant I have had the minimum of trouble to get a full refund and the seller does not want it returned.

I was planning to take the Metro to a small local car gathering tomorrow, but the weather forecast is poor so I may give it a miss.

Yes my world was complicated by another car enthusiast in the house!

The first car Mrs6C and I bought together was a 1972 Daimler Sovereign in sable, she went to see it and instead of reporting back, she just bought it!

It got hit on the very first night of our new home together when Mrs6C was returning from Wales by a young girl pulling out of a side road. Both cars damaged but nobody hurt, Mrs6C had agreed with the father of the girl he could repair the car rather than going via insurance. I was thinking this is not going to work but came home one evening to find Mrs6C and the father of the girl working on the car together. He had got a second hand wing and had it sprayed sable, only thing was he had not got the huge amount of orange peel the car had so I had to 1200 the whole car and polish it to match the wing. Well it needed doing anyway.

In Argentina they had to put Sirra lights in their Cortinas, because they needed the Cortina lights and grilles for their 1961 Falcons.

Didn't realise they had a "Mark 5" version of the old German coupe though.
