    Had it 17 years-MOT bloke this was all the welding it would need for a while-it did have the rear of the sills done last year. I'll pump it full of Dinitol when finished. Only other rust is on the rear arches-only a little bit.
     
     
     
    Very comfortable to drive. Very high geared (auto) it cruises effortlessly at 80mph and is good on fuel.
     
    Had done 30000 miles when bought (originally by my father in 2000) and is now on 92000 miles.
     
    I'll keep it forever.

    OK, I'm home with it.  PO is gutted at having to sell because his eyes are not good enough any more.  He did give me £20 back for petrol, which was a nice touch.  And it's a nice car.  Not as "fast" as PO would have me believe, but cruises happily on the motorway and the kickdown works fine, so I can't complain.  All the gadgets i've tried seem to work, which is pretty good.  Some of the interior plastics are a bit deformed; maybe one of our resident 800 lickers knows of a stock of parts?
     
    I'm afraid you'll have to wait for photos until I've sorted out my computer issues, sorry.

    Had some time off during the week so managed two full days on the car.  The plan was to replace the inner and outer wheel arch if time allowed...
    First job was to offer up the repair panels and draw around them so I can remove as much old metal as possible.  The arch and back corner of the wing always suffer on this side.

    The reason for this is all the expanding foam that ford put in between the inner & outer wing.  They did it because stuff in the boot can fall down there and it also acts as sound insulation.  Obviously the side effect is that water and condensation can't get out making the perfect rust trap.  The same is true on MK2 & 3 Capris with the worst being Mk2 Granadas that have the foam in various other places including the wheelarches.

    As you can see the inner structure is quite rotten and needs sorting out.  I set about the inner wheel arch first using the same methods I did for the other side.

    Next I replaced the bottom rear section of the arch which was very rotten right up to the seam with the next panel.  I made up a cardboard template and used various tools to bring the metal into the correct shape.  I then welded it all in using a hammer for slight adjustment as I worked my way along the weld.

    The next day I moved up to the inner closer panel for the rear wing.  I have repair panels for both the inner and outer.  However the outer panel does not cover far enough to allow complete removal of the inner panel.  The inner panel where it meets the boot floor is actually very good so I removed as much as I could and then spliced the repair panel in.

    Next I turned my attention to the outer wheel arch.  This side is more difficult due to the fuel filler so lots of adjustment and small cuts were made to get the panel to fit without removing too much metal.

     
     
    It takes a very long time to fully weld the panel on.  Any more than 3 strikes from the welder will start to warp the wing.  I held a blow gun hooked up to the compressor allowing me to cool the metal each time I did 3 welds.  Repeating this process eventually gets you a nice weld with very little warping from the metal.  Then the grinding process begins which also takes a long time.

    With the arch now finished things are starting to look quite a bit better on this side.  Next job is to fit the outer wing repair panel which will complete the bulk of the exterior work on this side of the car.

    Wait a minute, how big were these people?
     
    The pic above was taken in 1959 only seconds before this brand new Victor veered off the road and Daddy, Mummy, Daddy, Timmy, and Doris were all completely killed to death. The dusty damaged barn-find Victor is currently on ebay still with the original sales invoice on the front seat and the bodies of the family still inside. They don't come more original than that.
    A must-have for Vauxhall enthusiasts.

    It went from bright sunlight to dark cloud from bright sunlight to apocalyptic cloud rather quickly so getting the lighting right was tricky.
     
    Also being the complete noob I am the settings on the camera appear to cause a lot of close-up 18mm shots to fail to focus in the correct place, making it blurred.
     
    Selected are the photos that work. Edited for my own taste.
     
















     
    Favourites of show are close between the Saab and the red Vitesse. There was also a silver Vandenplas with red velour, and a 2.6 straight six manual. Phwoar.

    So with Mrs Sills out with the junior Crusty's I took the opportunity to claim one if their blankets. Let's call it an early lesson that all possessions are fleeting and it's a bourgeois concept! The tears will stop eventually!
    With fabric cut and hot glued on it looked much better.


    Just need to fit it tomorrow.

    The little tank type thing in this pic is the crankcase breather catch tank. It plugs into a hole in the top of the crankcase and any pressure and oily gas/residue is vented up through it and then back into the engines induction system to be burnt. The tank simply catches any solids or oil before it can clog up the induction system. This has also been sitting immersed in degreaser for ages to clean it out.
    This had a rubber hose attached to it which was held on by a really really old and rusty hose clamp. I ended up forcing a screwdriver into it to get it off, which didn't work but it did slip off with my full force pushing on it and sliced the palm of my hand open! Not very nice!
    The two U shaped channel sections are the rear leaf spring clamps. They've been blasted and now painted in the same chassis paint as the new springs.

    Also got the ally alternator mount plate cleaned up. I soaked it in degreaser for a week, agitating it with a stiff brush every day. It was absolutely filthy before. Cleaned up using the same method as the inlet manifold.
    You'll barely be able to see this once the engines back in the car but that's not the point is it!?

    Front end fully assembled with that lovely yellow fan the dishwasher did such a good job of cleaning.
    I've picked out the fan bolts heads in blue, and also been around the engine touching in any other bolt heads and exposed metal, mostly in black.
    It's not actually that far from being finished now.

    Then I spent what seemed like forever with a combination of spotweld cutters, cutting disc and flapwheel getting all the metal off that I would be replacement with new stuff.  This in turn revealed the rot that needed repairing in the bulkhead which could have been done from inside the car, it's just this way is easier because of all the extra work that's being done.

    Yet another check of the inner wing repair panel to be absolutely certain there's enough, and there is.  I need to clean this all back before I put the replacement trumpet on and it should be easier to do that off the car and then put the whole thing on the car in one go.

    I also pulled off the wing stay with the intention of repairing it.  Unfortunately, it's a bit far gone so I'll have to replace it.

    Once the extent of the rot on the bulkhead was explored, I carefully moved the wiring loom out of the way and set to with the angle grinder, taking my time being sure to make it a nice neat cut.

    I'm not fixing that today, it can wait until later.  Lesson for next time is that I ought to tie wrap wires out of the way so they don't spring back to their old place.  Anyway, new patch made, welded in and cleaned up.

    I wasn't paying much attention to time today, so I ran over my alloted time quite a lot.  That's why I then went on to chop the rotten corner off the wing so that I could weld a better piece in off the spare wing.  There's a few niggly little patches to finish off here and there before filler and paint, it's not a beautiful job but it'll do.

    This I think would be my personal three;
     

     

    -4th Gen Camaro. First saw one in Gran Turismo. I never could quite get it fully competitive in the "Modified Car" championship despite tweaking every set-up option that game offered. This would satisfy a few different citeria. Big v8, American, fast enough for me but also able to cruise about. The time when I could own one of these has passed, though it was never really a realistic prospect I suppose but I would like to at least have a drive in one. Pictured is the pre-facelift, factory sooped-up SS but any of the pre-facelift V8s would do. Could substitute a similar age American sedan or Coupe, or any of the 1990s Twin Turbo Japanese coupes.
     

     

    - This is Russell Brooke's works Manta 400. It wouldn't have to be a Manta; any of the works rally cars before GpB exploded with rampant horsepower would do. I've always preferred motor-sport where the cars look like the road cars and I'd like to drive one. Would have to be on a rally special stage; driving it on the road I think would be shit. I have had Mantas in the past so this more about driving something built to go fast but I don't care for super cars. Could substitute it for a 1990s, pre-aero BTCC car on a race track.
     

     

    -Corolla GT Coupe AE86. These have become such a cliche but 15 years ago they were just a rusty old coupe with a revy, 16v motor that you would see in the classifieds for £1000. I'm a child of the 1980s so I just love the shape and stylng of it. Then we had drifto, Initial D and people decidied 1980s cars are a thing again so now you'd be lucky to get a rusty shell for that sort of money. Another boat I've missed but I'd like to have at least have a go in one - standard, no mods.
     
    All my choices have been RWD Coupes that cross the border between the 1980s and 1990s!
