I'm pretty crap at cheap motoring, as I buy old heaps, then spend loads of money on them, then sell them for the same/less than I paid. Still, it's all a lot cheaper and more fun than owning a new car. With a cheap banger, there's a limit to how much money you can lose. I could give away all of my cars and it'd be less than the depreciation a new car has the moment you drive it away from the showroom.

I think this amusing scenario demonstrates that we have an equivalent to beer goggles that kicks in when we buy a car. All faults mysteriously vanish or are of no consequence!

Ace. If it was me, I'd probably ensure I had a bottle of LHM and a spare pump belt with me. Neither of those are easy to find in an emergency. They do lap up the miles though. I remember a friend owned one a few years back, and we cruised the mean streets of East Sussex, blaring out Genesis' Trick of the Tail. We were the coolest cats in town.

I can't think of anything that fits better than a Berlingo, especially as you can get a mildly jacked-up one for that faux by four look. Handy for your track. A friend has one and the only issue has been the heater fan switch going all BX-like and losing most of the speed settings.

Arrived safely in that there London. An automatic makes driving through the city almost bearable! It's a good job there's always plenty to look at when you're sitting in a car, not moving though. London is a bit of a head-messer when you're a country bumpkin. Worrying how easily I slotted back into city-driving mode, though I did make myself look like a tourist by letting several buses pull out.

Sadly, despite being very nice, the Jag isn't very comfortable. Having done the same journey in a W124 Merc, the W124 Merc wins. I still like the Jag more though, because it's a Jaaag.

+1 on this!I have just spent a pleasant* half hour wedged upside down in the MGF footwell adjusting the (self adjusting) brake light switch as the brake lights were constantly on. Footwell was clean, so no rolling around in shit though.
I too am incorrectly built for these type of jobs!

My dad had F41 FLM (I think) as a company car when I was in my teens - so about 1992/3. Facelift model, 1.6L estate in red. Seem to recall it often didn't like starting on cold mornings.

By the time I passed my test, he was working for another company, and had a Lynx Bronze 1.6L estate, E740 KOY. This was actually nicer than the facelift model I thought. Better interior, better seats and a much better stereo with better bass response. Of course, the fact that the Montego estate had the rear speakers in the bottom of the tailgate was utterly stupid, and meant that holidays were spent listening to very muffled Genesis.

This was the first car I drove after passing my test - a nervy drive with my dad as passenger. He then let me drive it solo on occasion, when I'd cruise the mean streets of Birmingham in utter style.

A couple of years ago, I drove this beautiful 1.6HL. I was impressed actually.
