Brilliant read. Really enjoyed that. I much much prefer my GS over my BX. Just a far better car to drive. Both are well sorted examples, but the GS is the winner hands down.

I had Tigar tyres on one of my BX's. Awful things. I slid through a set of traffic lights on red. Promptly removed and replaced with Michelins.

Had Barums on a Lada once. Can't remember how bad they were, as Lada handling is bad anyway.

My first car. Loved it on the basis that it got me mobile while others my age were still bussing it.

Would I own another?? Definitely not as a daily. Possibly as a weekend classic.

I had to put up with rust, lots if it, water leaks into the cabin, fuel smells, exhaust gasses leaking into the cabin, random trim falling off, side windows dropping at random, tyres with inner tubes as tubeless would not seal on the rims, gutless 1198cc engine, horrible ride and steering by telegram.

I do have fond memories for it though.

mrcitroen reacted to BavarianRetro in Hendry Card thread
"Hendry", as we knew him, joined the old car community that is Autoshite on the Wednesday 27th March 2013, the exact same day that BMW announced the price (£35000) of its forthcoming new i3 due to enter production in November that year, and Nissan's Sunderland plant commenced production of the phase two Leaf.

In his 1797 days (256 weeks and 5 days) on Autoshite, he displayed an erudition and attention to, and for, detail, that while it may well have been wordy and bordering on obsessional, it was tempered by the obvious, genuine interest and enthusiasm that was displayed in each one of his 2675 contributions across 742 separate subjects.

That is an average of 1.49 posts each and every day and if we can give him the benefit of assuming that he restricted himself to only 1000 words per Tolstoyesque post (he didn't!), that is 2.5 million words on subjects like Arnold Clark, Johnston's of Renfrew, Clanford etc.!

I've been buggering about with old cars and around the motor trade in west central Scotland for around about 40 years now and his detailed, encyclopaedic knowledge of the trade, traders and the people involved astounded me. And it was genuine *knowledge*, learned and retained, and not something found after a Google search and spouted as knowledge, like so many self appointed internet "experts" - Christ, Google would need to ask Hendry! The sort of stuff he knew, was interested in and happy to share isn't information that you can find on Google.

While his "holy grail", mark six Escort thread is the one that will probably be most remembered by most people, for me, and I suspect, most Central Scottish members, the one that sticks in my mind is his "FAO Scottish shiters" thread that extended to seven pages - ostensibly a request for information about the trade, but really an opportunity for Hendry to display his unbounded knowledge and enthusiasm for the machinations of the retail motor trade in Scotland. And he didn't have a rose tinted glasses approach either - he had a very realistic attitude with barely a good word to say about any of them!

If ever there is a publisher who considers that "A Concise History of the Scottish Motor Trade" is a worthwhile tome, all they need to do is print that thread.

    Here, have a flavour:-

His few comments on his personal situation revealed an obviously caring individual struggling through life.

But it will definitely be for his genuine interest and enthusiasm for uninspiring, middle of the road cars, and for the personalities of the motor trade in Scotland that he'll be remembered on Autoshite..................oh, and the occasional lengthy post - so consider this a tribute - a few trite words didn't seem enough. It never did for you.

    Rest in Peace

After a gas iron??? forget the cheapy ones. Weller pyropen is the dogs bollocks. We use them at work & i have one in the garage. Great for working in akward areas where a lead gets in the road. Loads of attachments available & the hot air blower is brill for heatshrink. Spare parts available too.

I have had mine for years (20+) worth every penny but a bit £££££££

Everything Waxoyl supply to "apply" the product is rendered a complete waste of time by this product's refusal to flow under anything less than volcanic temperature.   The standard aerosol cans come with a laughable straw taped to the side like WD40.   Their spray applicator is basically a bit of old Eezi-Bleed with a nail in the end.....

If it were me I would get a can of Dynax D50 directly from them, order the applicator which is a long bendy tube with a proper outlet and if you run out get another can.   The tubes are re-useable after a white-spirit dousing.

I have found Dynax will spray in almost any ambient temperature (and creep visibly) as long as the can is immersed in hot water beforehand.   Honestly, don't waste your time with Waxoyl.....

I've watched a fair few of Stavros's videos, there's some stuff he gets hilariously wrong on the modern trucks - if you were using his test drives as guides, you might find the ejector seat - but he's somewhere between Noel Furlong and the Brilliant! guy off the Fast Show.
The one from last year, where he corners Scania's Irish sales manager (if ever there was a job that typified 'shooting fish in a barrel) and makes him sell the new S series is comedy gold. It has a distinctly Father Ted edge to it.

Today, I decided to make a start on my Chevrolet Astro Starcraft day van. It had advisories for the rear brake pipes across the axle when tested in 2016 and when I gave it a pre test looking at in August, it was obvious it would not pass, so it was put aside in the "to do" pile. Since then it sat until a couple of days ago I jump started it and moved it to the shed door, where a battery conditioner/charger was connected. This morning, showing fully charged, I decided a quick test run was in order before starting work. Connected the battery, started first turn and off up the track.

Now, my track is about a mile long, the first 3/4 being a bit rough, pot holed and full of standing water, but the final 1/4 is nice smooth tarmac down to the public road. I took my time on the rough bit, at the end of which the heater was starting to heat and slowly dispelling some of the condensation caused by 6 months sitting. Foot down on the tarmac, and it became obvious the brakes were binding, but otherwise all seemed OK. At the end of the drive, it is just about possible to turn around without going on the public highway, but the newly formed condensation on the rear windows was going to make it tricky.

As the van has no MOT and is sorned, what follows is a figment of my imagination, as there is no way* I would knowingly break the law, officer. I decided to nip down and use my neighbours drive entrance to turn around, a distance of about 250 yards (the kids here can substitute meters for yards if it helps! ). Turned right out of my drive, after 50 yards or so there is a 90 degree left, about  100 yards there is a 90 right, over a bridge over the river then another 100 yards to the turning point. So far, so good. Turned around, no other vehicles seen, so retraced my steps over the bridge at which point the damn thing cut out. The instant heavy steering meant I just made it around the first 90 before coming to a halt completely blocking the road. Tried a re-start and just got a clunk, so decided to push it down the hill and out of the way before another vehicle arrived. This was where I discovered the brake binding was sufficient to mean I could not move it. AAAAAARGH! Illegal van, completely blocking the road, looks like a dead battery, no phone with me, and nearest jump leads a mile away! My only hope being the next vehicle along would not be BIB and that they would be sufficiently helpful to help push it out of the way, if it would move with 2 people, Panic almost set in, despair being slightly ahead of the panic!

At this point, I had a brainwave, and a quick check under the bonnet revealed the truth. I had forgotten to tighten up the battery terminal and it had jumped off, resting on the top of the terminal sufficiently to light the dash lights. Pushed it back on, it started and I promptly headed home. Moral of the story? Remember to take a spare battery and jump leads. Oh, no other vehicles passed during all this time, another benefit of living up here!

Van is now in the shed, back end on ramps, with penetrating oil soaking into the brake pipe unions. Tomorrow, hopefully they will come off.

Phoned AA about 6:15 they arrived at me by half 7 looked at car and declared recovery time. Got that sorted then took me to Enterprise car hire in Stirling where a 17 plate 999cc disastra was waiting for me. Got to work on time too!

Car colllected from my house shortly afterwards and delivered to garage. Just the painful bit of paying. I don't do springs. Always fear they will take my head off. That's one area where Hydro Citroens win.

Quite an easy process all in all. Top marks to AA.
