Talking of obscure Merc conversions, I've just followed one of these and was confused by the badges on the back of what appeared to be an ordinary V300 - https://www.drivenlandjets.co.uk/

    Erm...no thanks.

I stumbled on this genre a while ago, I believe in some parts they are known as "stealth wealth". The premise is that by using the van base you blend in more but you can have all the mod cons and toys in the back. Used by some footballers and the like...

This used to be mint about 2-3 years ago but then seemed to be used as a daily driver and has really gone downhill visually in the last few months. It probably wouldn't take too much to get it looking good again.

Network rail can take what seems a long time to attend incidents in my experience. Particualrly if needed to make a line "safe" for us plebs to enter on it.  I wonder if the dutch lot are a BTP equiv who do have Blue Lights here.

Funnily enough, I saw today that the TfL incident team model of BTP officers driving mixed crews to incidents on blue lights has been extended to the Wessex area with a new NR/BTP response vehicle. I have twice had the massive Police firetrucks turn up when I have been on shift at a major London terminus, needless to say they weren't my best shifts....

Stagecoach are in the midst of reliverying all their buses in Manchester into a white base with yellow, blue and teal swirls.

No idea why as they'll all get undone in the near future when the devolved buses and unified black and yellow livery come in.

I suspect they'll be hedging their bets that they'll need to include funky new busses in any future tenders and therefore anything that is repainted now can be farmed off to other parts of the country or that they can incorporate the cost of any re-repaints necessary in the future tenders given that no-one has manchester liveried busses at the mo.

With the COVID grants, there's a lot of government money sloshing around the bus world for work on facilities and vehicles that previously would never have been signed off by their owning groups. Its a very strange world according to the manager I know, money for repainting 20 busses but no money for hiring additional staff etc.

I don’t think the great British class system helped much. Huge class rift between management and the shop floor for most of the 20th century which exacerbated terrible industrial relations.  It also led to many British car brands trying to trade on silly class distinctions that the rest of the world neither knew nor cared about.

I suspect that Riley and Wolseley fell very neatly into that non-niche... the differentiation between the two never seemed to make much sense, nor did letting them stumble on for quite so long.

I'm glad he assures us it's legitimate chinook paint. One of the biggest problems I face with buying cars is illegitimate chinook paint.

The number of times I've accidentally bought a car with Chen Huq knockoff paint, I can count on no hands.

Its doubly impressive given that they (Chinooks, not Volvo 240s) have been flying over my house for years and they always come in a mysterious shade of blue that is in actual fact green....

Why do traffic cops have to give directions 3 times - 'LEFT LEFT LEFT', then 'RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT'.  It sounds like some form of Tourettes.  Makes you wonder what everyday conversation at home must be like - 'Ok luv, I'm just going round to the SHOP SHOP SHOP for some MILK MILK MILK'.  Bedroom conversation must be a bit strange too, full and clear directions and descriptions (X3) as events occur, best not think about it.

    LOL :)

I think thats done just so the directions are crystal clear over even a dodgy radio connection or such

As Lightbulbfun says, it is because they have to stay in contact with the control room where they'll be making the decision whether to continue the chase or not and having what is pretty much an old Nokia to narrate with means that the audio quality often isnt the best...

  8. When I was out in California ove the summer there was plenty of uber rare British cars out and about with British plates on that had been shipped over for the Pebble Beach concours event but I don't think they really count as being 'proper' wandering cars seeing as half of them would have been put on a plane and back in blighty before I was!

As for foreign cars in the UK, there's a chancer one road over from the 'rents who has a Holden Monaro on Queensland plates and has done for a couple of years, I doubt he'll get challenged as Thames Valley Police never challenged the lad driving a Honda Civic on Arab plates that spent nearly ten years going around North Oxford.

  9. Bit of a grump as I fear for the future. I'm a member of several model bus sites on facebook, most of the members are very well behaved and I have no qualms trading with them but problems always seem to come from the youngsters. It's a dying hobby we really need to get more young people involved in but these kids really aren't helping themselves as they just end up pissing everyone off and getting banned. Some examples:

-Pestering to buy something that's not for sale (usually for far less than it's worth)

-Asking inane/stupid questions that can easily be answered by google

-Wanting to buy something and pay later as they can't afford it now

-Making an insulting offer well below the advertised price and then taking the hump when it's rejected

-Placing a wanted ad for something that doesn't even exist

-Placing a wanted ad but only being willing to pay way below the going rate (had a good example yesterday with someone wanting a plain white repainted Enviro400 for less than a tenner. Those cost £20-30 new so you'd be looking at £50-60 minimum for a repaint. Jog on son.)

-Agreeing a deal  and then finding excuses to get out of it

-Buying something 'because they really want it' and then readvertising it straightaway at a higher price

I'm all for supporting the younger generation but they really don't seem to know how to behave in adult society anymore. I was 13 when I started but I would never have dreamed of behaving like some of these kids. It's not as if buying stuff is difficult. See something you like, contact the seller and pay for it, and if you can't afford it don't try to buy it. Simples.

I can remember being a right old useless little shit on the internet back in the day but it certainly has got worse. Now I've grown up and I am selling models on ebay and elsewhere I find myself inundated with stupid messages clearly written by kids, the last one on ebay wanted me to hold the item for a month after he had won it on ebay so he could pay for it. Unsurprisingly he had plenty of negative feedback from sellers who he had never paid but luckily he never bid which saved me the grief. I think the essential problem is that the age of people using the internet is getting lower and lower with predictable consequences.

  10. Ah right, that is fair enough and a shame to lose a RHD one, I thought it had been the Russian car. I doubt May had much of an impact on the stunt at all.. Just a token bit of childish antics thrown in at the end.

  11. I hope they nail them too, and stick them in chokey for a long time. BUT: (i) It is politically inexpedient to lock up Republicans, of whatever hue and (ii) The PSNI are constantly being hampered by political interference. One of the reasons I left. Good people, trying to do the near-impossible with BOTH hands tied.

Unfortunately true on both accounts. The PSNI are relatively crap at community policing but after watching them dealing with the flag protests as well as the constant background bullshit from every shade of dissidents and big mouths over the last 18 months I've nothing but respect for what the average peeler out here.

Speaking of NI, this weekend I finally leave the place... It's been an amazing experience and the people I've met have been absolutely smashing but I was made an offer I couldn't refuse so now I'll go home and never be referred to as 'that english one' ever again.

p.s. I'm pretty sure I saw the SauceDoctor Rover in the city centre a while ago, that things spectacular and must be one of the best 25s left, keep up the good work!

  12. Probably worth adding that this'll be the reason for the grin...

Seeing as he was one of the ones who lost the civil case over the bomb, his chances of being released aren't looking too good. The only shame will be when pig-shit thick idiots start calling for his release from 'internment'. Together with the recent arrests over the Jean McConville murder, its good to see the PSNI nicking some of the bastards who must have thought they'd got away with it by now.

  13. I started browsing autoshite about 7-8 years ago... Back then we were lusting and the 70s motors and looking at the 80s cars as potential classics etc. Fast forward nearly a decade and we've essentially handed over the 70s cars to the 'classics crowd', the 80s cars are well established and are becoming 'classics' and the 90s cars are next on our radar.

90s motors are about a decade away from being truly regarded as being classics but the high profile cars such as the GTIs, Cosworths Vauxhall Lotus Carltons etc will start to attract a lot of interest in the next couple of years. Everything has its time and it is inevitable that us lot will be at the vanguard shepherding the shit cars into safety and onto classicdom, that is what Autoshite does best!

  14. From what I was told the air cooled engines were incredibly reliable and very easy to fix if something went wrong... The guy who told me that though did make it onto the front cover of a Maggie catalogue though (which I'd love to see again but is unlikely as I've lost contact with him). Seeing as so few have been preserved I presume they all ended up being exported.
