Hooray! oh... looks a bit grim. New distributor cap and plug leads though, that's a good sign right?

Got it back to England (The 405 was great on this trip), took it to my mechanic friend and got him to take a look...

The carb's scrap, oh, and the engine's seized.

    FFS!!!

Also as it's a later engine there are virtually no interchangeable parts.

SIGH. So, it was unseized using diesel and time, installed in the car and made to run with a Weber carb from a Sierra or something (with auto choke!). Some new tyres were fitted and then it was about ready for an MOT fail!

Probably ought to wash some of the green off it first though. So I did. It's gone very pink. And a bit rusty.

    Hey, remember this?!

No? Me neither, but towards the end of last year I suddenly remembered I still had most of a Simca 1301. It's quite depressing seeing these old photos as it looks awful now.

I thought I'd updated this more recently than January 2013 but clearly not.

After the engine was repaired, it lasted maybe a week or so. Then, driving along the A27 the exact same thing happened as before. Ruined shells, damaged crankshaft and some other damage. It'd cost quite a bit to repair, and we weren't even sure whether it could be repaired as the damage to the crankshaft was quite bad.

So then it just sat. I was so pissed off with it, and had spent about the car's value again on it in a few months after buying it, and I didn't have the money or will to carry on with it.

That was it for a year or so. I'd occasionally have a browse on leboncoin for an engine but nothing ever came up and I never had the money anyway.

At the end of last year I'd managed to save a bit of money so started to look a bit more seriously. An engine had been advertised near Caen, complete and healthy, for about €450. We agreed on €400 and I (well, Mr_B kindly helped with the translations) arranged to collect it at the end of February.

So, it was driven to Worthing for the MOT, which it failed. On one brake doing nothing, wiper blades and a bulb. That was sorted and it drove back with an MOT!

I collected it and the next day was last Sunday, I wanted to take it for a 30min drive to test it out etc. Then somebody spilled diesel along the A27 so that was closed. This resulted in me sitting in traffic for 4hrs trying to get out of Brighton.

This was horrible. I was sitting in this shitty looking car, it was smoking from the oil breather and overheating, cut out a few times and was generally awful. I hated it.

It made it there though, and was running better after the carb was adjusted. The fan wan't working properly and there's no way I could get any parts to fix it at short notice so it was just bodged to run with the engine. Works OK like that though. The heavy breathing will be harder to sort but I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

I attempted to clean it up a bit and cut the paint back a bit by hand before polishing it etc. It looks miles better but hasn't really lasted. I'll have to do it properly soon.

The high quality cluch slave cylinder installation had somehow failed

A rubber seal thing had somehow gone missing (no idea how, it was defo in there before - I blame Barrett), and the pipe had popped out of the top. After fuggin' ages an RAC man came and fixed it for us.

The next destination was Shitefest. As you know, it made it there successsfully, and it made it all the way back too!!!

This was on the way back.

    (pic stolen from Barrett)

After Shitefest, next stop was Classics on the Common in Harpenden on the 26th of July. Plan was to meet Seth on the way, and follow him for the last leg of the journey.

The day started off pretty badly, as I broke one of the 70s lights off of the bumper by leaning on it. As I couldn't be arsed to remove it properly I just taped it to the bumper. That'll do, I'll take them off at Seth's house or something.

Once we got to the M25 (between Junction 8 and 9 I believe...), it started making an ominous tapping noise, which quickly also resulted in a significant loss of power. We pulled on to the hard shoulder to investigate, and by this time it'd turned into a horrible bottom end knock. Great.

Somehow all of the oil had escaped. It wasn't looking good.

After ages, the RAC came, tried to adjust the timing and made it worse, then followed us off at the next junction, where we waited for ages (again) for a transporter thing to arrive.

And that's it. It sat around looking sorry for itself, then I moved house and in November it went off to be assessed by the Retro-Rides guys. It then sat here for a while...

garycox got a reaction from Junkman in Volvo 480ES 2.0 - UPDATE
Been meaning for ages to stick an ad up for this, but as per usual I have been incredibly lazy. As such, it kinda needs to go ASAP as there are too many cars hanging about again.

It's in tidy condition generally, I've not been underneath but would be surprised if there are any major issues lurking.

The MOT's expired and it won't pass another without work to the brakes at least. They were advisories on the last MOT and while they do stop the car, they're really juddery and awful. I can't take it for a test to see what it needs unfortunately, as the insurance has also expired. Other issues include:

    - The gearbox. This is the main thing, it started making a horrible grindy noise when reversing at certain angles. Then it was when reversing at most angles. Now it's when reversing at most angles and sometimes going forwards. It has been suggested that this might be a failed engine mount causing all the angles to be out of whack and therefore the noise. It might well be, but assume the worst and you might be pleasantly surprised.
    - Speedo is also intermittent (and has gone from 'sometimes not working' to 'rarely working' - could be related to the above?
    - Exhaust vibrates on something.
    - The passenger door electric window doesn't work. The motor seems to work as you can hear it, but the glass stays shut. Probably something come adrift.
    - The paint on the nose cone and passenger front wing is a slightly different shade. This looks really obvious in some pictures but in real life is not actually very noticeable.
    - Dents in each rear corner between the bumper and the lights. Also the lights are cracked and faded etc. The bit of parcel tape covers a hole.

    It's not all bad though:

    - The engine (2.0 NA - Renault engine?) seems good, and it has a brand new alternator.
    - Mileage is low (about 54k).
    - The CEM (computery thing) works although the display is a bit dim
    - The interior and wheels are good; and
    - It has a load cover and also rigid plastic floor and boot 'mats', which are apparently a bit rare and worth money separately (not loads like).

Also it has POP UP LIGHTS!! That work!!

Oh, also it has a boot full of used spares with it, mainly electrical and a few small trim bits.

    It's in LEWES, EAST SUSSEX

Can't think of anything else, but feel free to ask any questions and that.

** EDIT - Now FREE or parts available very cheaply **

Anyone want this? It's pretty horrible, and issues include, but are not limited to:

    - Needs a VIC check (I wasn't informed of this when i bought it), so I only have the green bit of the previous V5 and a letter from DVLA saying it needs a VIC.
    - Suspected HGF (mayo on filler cap and coolant is grim)
    - No radio
    - Looks shit

It's MOTd til September, still drives OK at the moment, low indicated mileage (50k ish I think, with old MOTs etc to prove) and that's about all the good bits. Athough my friend did borrow it a couple of weeks back to go to Yorkshire for an emergency family errand and he's still alive and speaking to me. It's genuinely much better on the motorways than a K10 Micra or a Metro etc.

My plan (after I found out about the VIC and HG) was to run it until the MOT runs out, or the HG gets worse (whichever is sooner) and then scrap it. I have other working cars though so it's a bit unnecessary.

I have been told that the Auto bonnet with the power* bulge is worth* about £80, but obviously I have not researched this.

These pictures were taken AFTER I'd cleaned it (and removed the horrendous wheel trims) - you can guess how grim it was beforehand.

Because it's a small automatic and because Peugeot engines seem incredibly 'good' at this sort of thing, I'd have thought there was a fighting chance the mayo is condensation, as opposed to headgasket.

garycox got a reaction from brownnova in Volvo 480ES 2.0 - UPDATE

Can't think of anything else, but feel free to ask any questions and that.
