All(tyre) dressed up and nowhere to go. Really is a tidy little thing. Has cleaned up very well. Just wish it'd start! If I get a diagnostic thing, which I was planning to do pre Civic, anyway, would it tell me what was happening, or not happening when it cranks over without firing? Any recommendations? Is something around 300 quid likely to do the business?

Germans in 1936 wouldn’t have made anything up , would they? I mean I’m sure Hitler would have been quite content with them having the second fastest train and the engineers involved wouldn’t have tweeked the results in case they were rewarded with a stay in a holiday camp near the Polish  border.

    Fabia update:
Window is now less borked, brand new regulator from eBay was fitted. Works better than it did. Result.
The stereo is back to the cassette and CD changer combo Sony lump I've got, with the changer in the boot, again. Glad I didn't take the wiring out! Result.

Furthermore, in this process, I could replace the pollen filter with greater ease since the glovebox was coming out anyway.

For such an insignificant job, you'd think it hadn't taken me two years of "I'll get round to it" to actually do it. Doesn't smell like death when you first turn the blower on now. Result.
Ordered a 2001 brochure for these cars, because I haven't actually got anything like that for the Fabia. Found a set of wheels I'd like, but can't find on eBay. Less of a result, but still cool.

Further to that, the drop links have been replaced on both sides now. Only took a lot of swearing and the ANGERY GRINDER OF DEATH to get the fuckers off. No knocks. Result.
Finally, it's been doing mileage quite the thing again, done in excess of 25,000 miles since I bought it, and plenty to go with SkodaFest in June and ShiteFest in July, not to mention various trips here, there, and everywhere. Still need to go to Selkirk to collect a wing for the Focus... eventually.

What a farking shitpile of a day...
Spent way too much of it in A&E with the small brother, he's autistic and struggles talking to unfamiliar people so as a responsible older sibling I've been with him. Messaged my boss asking for tomorrow off, seeing as we're still sat in the waiting room with no sign of anything happening, and got told that I couldn't and I would be responsible for covering my shift. Erm, pardon?

Never make the mistake of asking for time off (in the case of sickness/other unpaid leave) - tell them you won't be there instead.
Huge difference between the two.. sounds silly but assert dominance and don't sound too passive or apologetic for "letting them down"
Again, don't tell them you are going off work because you need to take your brother to an appointment, because they could twist that into misconduct if it means you didn't show up at short notice, then you won't have the inherently strong sickness defence. Say that your brother is unwell and you've had to take on additional family roles which has led you to feeling stressed/overwhelmed and you need a day or two to recuperate.
You don't have to be placed in intensive care to be deemed as "truly sick" !! 🙂
Depends on the sector but if it's an employee deficit sector, no employer will seriously want to lose an employee or indeed sack them over something like that so all you need to do is make them know who's boss when it comes to you deciding on your ability to go to work.
If they can't account for staff sickness in the way they run their business/manage shifts then that's solely their problem and not yours.
Maybe I'm just sheltered by having pretty much always worked for numerous very relaxed independent/family run businesses who are actually human, and treat their employees as humans as well 🤷

Had a weird but funny one today!
Sat indoors and the door bell rings.
Look out the front window and there’s two young kids at the door, must have been 12 or 13, something like that.
Answer the door and they’re really nicely spoken polite kids that have been passing by for the last few months on the way to school.
Turns out they’re both really into cars, and old cars in particular!
They’d seen the Mercury on the drive and wondered what it was and were wondering if they could have a look at it!
One of them asked if it was a Lincoln, which he was actually very very close to being right about. Since they seemed so interested and keen I opened it up and let them have a sit in it and take a few pics.
They were absolutely over the moon!😁
It’s actually so nice to see the younger generation get excited about stuff like this! Reminds me of how I was at that age. Maybe, hopefully letting them have a proper look will spark a lifelong interest in cars. Hopefully it’ll be those kids looking after these old cars in the future.
Im a bit surprised they had the balls to knock the door tbh, but fair play. Hopefully that’s not something that gets them in trouble some day though.
