JakeT reacted to danthecapriman in Volvo 740, interior headlining finished! Pg 23.
Headlining is now finished! At long last!
Centre courtesy/dome light is now refitted and everything has had a hoover down to get rid of the remaining old foam dust. It’s looking pretty good in there now.
The whole interior has been hoovered out and given a good wash with a bucket of soapy warm water and cream cleaner. Just needs some cockpit shine buffing on now to shine it up again.
It’s not perfect and it’s not absolutely the same as original but it’s 100% better than it used to be and looks so much nicer inside the car now. Plus, the sunroof is now fixed too so it shouldn’t happen again!
The next job was to replace the top and bottom radiator hoses.
I wasn’t originally intending to tbh but earlier this year I was doing something else and noticed they were both in a bit of a state, with some rough looking ends and various cuts, cracks and chafing on them. Squeezing them showed them to have gone extremely soft too. They’re 35 years old though in all fairness so a good time to replace them.
Heres the old ones. Definitely past their prime!
The reason for the chafing damage turned out to be from the clamp that holds the positive battery to starter cable to the inner wing. It’s extremely close to the bottom radiator hose so I’ve also rerouted the cable slightly and repositioned the clamp so nothing can touch the hose now.
I had also intended to reuse the antifreeze that was drained out since it’s only a year or so old, but on looking at it afterwards I’ve used new instead. It’s turned a horrible semi transparent brown colour with only a faint tinge of the original blue colour to it, so even after all the years I’ve had the car and cleaned & flushed it through there’s still a bit dirt and grime in the cooling system!
Just need to recheck the coolant level now it’s cooled down and it’s done.
Next job should replacing the rear springs & shocks. Finally.

Home from pissing about in Galloway Forest.
Of course the front nearside brake has decided to start squeaking. That can wait until tomorrow.

I'm investigating the leisure battery charging system on this at the moment, as it seems to be charging more effectively from the on-board battery charger (25 A) than the alternator (90 A). So I've bought a fairly cheap meter to monitor things. I've already established some voltage drop over the split charge wiring, and a lower than expected charging voltage when measured at the starter battery.
Comparing the accuracy to a calibrated meter I was pretty happy especially considering the price I paid, but even happier with my Draper meter, again fairly cheap! With the charge monitor it's showing only 3 A or so charging from the alternator so far. Although if I turn on the AC (~50 A load) it will still charge with a similar current.
It may be that it's just because the leisure batteries are almost full, so will be interesting to see the charge rate once they are depleted.
In other news it went through the MOT fine the other week.
The uneven tyre wear is something which has always happened, despite taking it to several places for the alignment to be checked. I can only think that something is happening dynamically to upset the alignment, which is not picked up on a static check.
I'm fairly sure there is no longer an oil leak - certainly there is no noticeable drops or need to top up. But the pinholed sump has spread a LOT of oil over the underside, which I think is what they've picked up on!

Recently, I went on holiday. (Hooray). Took the stena line overnight from Harwich to Hoek Van Holland. The Amsterdam, Hamburg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Malmö, Hanover, Ghent, and finally the Chunnel home. I’ll spare too many boring details, but show the shite spotted on the trip.
E30 and a DS boarding the boat. Already off to a good start.
Drove at speed, as is customary in Germany. Stops me speeding on the road here. Nearing 200k but will still pull to the limiter at 155.

Hamburg is the home of old taxis it seems. W124, S124, and a W126! Surprisingly exciting.
Got stopped by undercover customs in Germany. They were pleasant enough.
Old Volvo spot, weathered and all the better for it.
Why do additional lights look so right? I want a V70.
A meet of old American stuff in Copenhagen.
One that made me squeal. A Lupo 3L! Not a lupo with a big engine, more a Lupo that would do 3L/100km. Lots of trick upgrades.
A Porsche. Not shite, but I have a big thing for Pre-euro plates. This Porsche wearing ‘old’ German plates. Germany changed to their current style in 1994, but owners could choose old style plates until 1999, when they were no longer allowed. Means this Porsche has been owned since 1999, probably before.

Back in 2009 I saw two lads stack a stolen Mk Granada Ghia 4x4 into a parked car. The scumbags fucked off leaving the previously immaculate and even back then rare Ford revving it's tits off. I knew that this car was cherished by someone and the damage wasn't beyond repair.
I tried to get into the Granada to stall it as the Cologne V6 was bouncing off the limiter but I was held back by bystanders as plod would want to fingerprint the car. To its credit, the Granada lasted 20 minutes at full throttle with a fucked rad pissing out coolant before seizing.
