I did the hydramount today, which I figured need replaced as it seemed to be leaking oil and I was getting a loud "clunk" and vigorous engine movement when going from neutral to drive or reverse and also at points when changing gear on the move. I had been putting it off for a while due to the weather and my inability to our an axle stand on one sill due to the sill no longer being complete. Other than getting the blasted undertray off (and it ain't going back on), it all went quite smoothly, until I had to take the hydramount itself off. I didn't have the special tool (£90!) and I couldn't find my drift to try and force it round. So instead I got a chain wrench round it and somehow managed to use a pry bar to get it moving. It would only move a few mm at a time though due to access being tight so it was quite a painful process getting it off. Once it was off was easy enough to get everything back together, though no way of getting the hydramount more than hand tight. Took it for a quick spin. I'm still getting a pronounced double clunk on moving from neutral to drive, though it is less severe than before. I don't seem to be getting the clunk whilst driving. I can't see that I fitted it wrong so perhaps one of the other mounts also needs done? I'm only trying to nurse it to June ie it's MOT, which is also when the new car I've ordered should arrive...!

  4. I think my 75 might be near the end of its time with me. 2.5l V6 Conny SE with about 65k miles on the clock. Not for Mally but maybe for someone else. It's been a good, reliable car for two and a half years or so and generally drives nicely, never left me stranded or not started. It needs welding to the front right sill (other side seems solid). It also needs a hydra engine mount, which is leaking and causing clunking / engine movement - I have the replacement mount, but haven't fitted it as the front sill is soft and holey and I didn't know where to put the axle stand, and couldn't really be bothered wrestling with the undertray in the cold weather. It needs cosmetic work to rear quarter - interacted with a lampost a while back. There are a few other cosmetic imperfections but otherwise presents reasonbly nicely. Inside it is fairly nice, headlining is saggy at front and has come loose at the back, rear pockets are broken, but everything works - air con, cruise, heated seats, parking sensors (though sometimes they stick on beeping), rear sunblind, six cd changer. It's had rear brakes, a backbox, a thermostat, a suspension arm, and a few other bits and pieces in its time with me. It has the typical KV6 thing of non working VIS motors due to a hollowed out inlet manifold. Doesn't seem to impact driveability that much. With a bit of tlc it could could be a good car, given it is low mileage and high spec. If going to a good home would be available for not much more than scrap money, if anyone might be interested, let me know. Will be after buying a new car in the NY. Otherwise it might be at risk of getting scrapped, which would be a shame.
  5. So the Golf is gone and the fleet is down to two. The Rover is in a state of 'managed decline' - not sure I will be spending the money to get it through its next MOT, in light of its need for welding and poor cosmetic condition. I thought over the last few weeks that it might be very close to the end, as the gearbox had gotten extremely clunky and jerky - particularly moving from drive to neutral. However, closer inspection suggests it is probably a burst hydra engine mount - as you can see, it appears to be leaking oil where it shouldn't be. Who knew it even had such a thing, thought they would just be rubber. Anyway, a replacement is on its way - 55 quid and hopefully easy enough to replace myself.
  6. This is what I miss most about living in Scotland - being able to get to this sort of place (and quiet roads!) easily and quickly.
  7. Mine suck as well. Someone once told me it was because the leather was so thick and luxurious the heat didn't get through. I'm not sure I believed it ...
  8. Whoops ... a metal pole in a supermarket car park managed to connect with the Golf's wing mirror today. Stupid place to have a metal pole, imho. Luckily, it was the wing mirror that was already broken, and because Golf's are so ubiquitous it is super cheap to fix - twenty quid for a wing mirror casing in the right colour and a heated mirror glass. The 75's coolant levels are staying level which is great, must have been a bit of air stuck. It also looks like the 75 is going to get treated to the welding it needs and a gearbox oil change - courtesy of my mobile TVR specialist, who said he'd be happy to do it and is in fact cheaper than my local garage! He might get more of my work in the future ... The TVR managed to misbehave the first journey I took it out after having the sender replaced. Lost power entirely at 4000 rpm and 70mph or so on a dual carriageway with nowhere to stop, which was fun. EFI fault message and oil pressure warning light. Cue hazard lights, a big queue and just about being able to limp it into a garage forecourt. Let it cool down for thirty minutes or so and nursed it home at low revs, and it behaved fine. Specialist came back out, plugged it into his laptop, reset the codes and we went out for a drive with it all plugged in. Behaved admirably, didn't throw any more codes, and obviously he cannot fix what is not broken. Bloody TVRs. Inevitably it will break down the next time I take it out ...

  11. Glad that was replaced! All seems healthy again Also my tvr specialist is cheaper per hour than my local backstreet garage...how does that work?!
  12. I've seen a lot of cars on the side of the M25 in recent weeks. Mostly newer cars. My 75 has never left me stranded. Once the exhaust detached from the backbox but couls drive home. My TVR did last weekend, though ultimately it was a misreading sensor and I could have driven home...

My better half's birthday today, so what a gent I am and let her spend a decent chunk of the afternoon in a lay-by off the A31, in the blazing heat, waiting to be recovered Oil light came on under acceleration and pressure was apparently 0 PSI. Almost certain it's just a sensor as oil levels look fine and it was driving and sounding fine, which it surely wouldn't be with 0 psi on a hot engine, but decided not worth the risk given these engines do have a bit of a reputation so called for recovery and can get a local specialist to take a look at it later this week.
  15. Accordingly to Google the KV6 is a pain to bleed. I did bleed it by lifting the expansion tank above the engine and running it until hot, which was what I read the procedure was.
  16. So the 75 is driving well, holding temperature even in heavy traffic, no issues in that regard. The coolant level does however seem to drop intermittently - some journeys it won't drop at all, some it will drop from max to min. These are generally short journeys which is all it has been used for recently. I have looked around with a torch and can't see any obvious evidence of fresh leaks from the thermostat and associated tubes, or from the radiator elsewhere. Could it be air burping its way out of the system as it is being used and driven?

  18. The 75 was pressed back into service on the commute today. After what was a reasonably big job for me, I was a little nervous that it was going to overheat in the Blackwall Tunnel, but it performed admirably. I quite like the juxtaposition in the office car park. The hot weather over the last few weeks has done a number on the headlining, which was drooping in places before but is now drooping in many more places. Another problem I've had for a while is a slightly jerky gearbox, seemingly between 1/2 or 2/3. That seems to be getting worse, with quite a firm jerk on certain low gear changes. From a bit of searching, it seems to be a fairly common problem with Jatco gearboxes and may be a couple of solenoids that can be changed easily enough - though without Rover diagnostics, not likely to know which ones. If I just leave it, is it likely to stop working altogether at some point or simply continue to clunk?

  20. Took the front undertray off today to fish out the various things I'd dropped in the engine bay. What a palaver, every single fastener different and rusty, one had to get snapped off, several wouldn't go back in. Painful. Found my magnetic stick and the coil pack nut, but of course failed to find the 10mm socket. I also found this ... any idea what it is?
  21. Not shocked that the injectors were leaking given the state of the old seals. All replaced and no longer appears to be leaking. Quick spin round the block and temperature seems to hold in the middle no problem. Which is good.
