Currently in the South of France staying with my goadfather who has set me the task of finding him a classic to buy. Found a GT6 "light project" for sale in the town and god it was dog rough. It was a Canadian import and while it started (with a jump from the Audi 80) the interior was tatty, and the bodywork was awful, albeit not rotten. It was quite sad as it was clearly a car that had been loved once (there was an old photo of it in Canada) but had since been neglected. But I also got the impression that even though it had deteriorated, build quality when new would not have been the best. Something about Triumphs have always reminded me of kit cars when it comes to fit and finish and general quality. I can see the appeal, but if I was going for a Triumph I'd go for a 2500S (my friend has been running one as his first car aged 17/18, the cheapest running one in the UK and it was very very rough). It used to be a brand for which I cared little, but over the past few months I have really grown to appreciate them, and if I was resurrecting an old British brand today, I think Triumph would have the best chance of making something of it.

I know they're not great, but you'd forgive it everything for that, wouldn't you?
I agree, they're lovely cars but my P6 does the "70's saloon" job just as well, if not better. I really want my next classic to be more of a sports car when I decided I've had my time with the 3500.

I know what you mean about the noise. When I was 16 my Dad had a mid-life crisis and bought an, at the time, 6 year old 1973 GT6 . Even then it wasn’t that fast but it sounded amazing. I was living in Birmingham and him in London, we both went back to mid- Wales most weekends, on a Sunday night he’d let me drive as far as Llandrindod Wells, which meant about 50 miles of B roads and the Tregaron to Abergwesyn mountain road.To a 16 year old this was like the Targa Floria or something, he’d encourage me to go faster and not be a wuss, I didn’t need much telling! Probably not the most responsible parenting .
Some weekends I’d hitch to London then go from his flat in Wembley, the journey on the M4 was hell, so unbearably noisy and uncomfortable. He’d often take whatever company car was lying around the office just so as not to have to endure that pain. It must have been bad when a Marina 1700 estate or Renault 12 was a better option and he never encouraged me to go faster in the Marina on the Sunday night, that’s for sure.
I probably wouldn’t fit in one these days , but there’d still be a place in my Euromilions garage for a white Mark 3 on steel wheels .
