I really can’t understand the appeal of Discovery 3/4s.

I prefer the Ital to the Marina. 

Was it Donald Stokes who said “we’re going to have to short shit this bloke Issigonis” Short Shit being factory speak for whenever Issigonis needed to go for a poo at work his Colleague’s would intentionally get in his way or distract him till he got to the point where he would end up going Home to use his own toilet out of frustration (he was known to not suffer fools well) thus spending less time in the Office ?

Just behind where the passenger side fog light blank/grill would be is where the transmission cooler lives, Make sure you check it for leaks as it has a hard time as it quite exposed to road crud and the steel pipe fittings cause it to corrode as it’s alloy, I’ve actually seen them corrode to the point where the pipes have actually snapped off with corrosion. 
Fun fact - you could never spec a p38 diesel auto with fog lights due to the location of the transmission cooler but you can spec them on the manual p38 diesel

Part of me thinks it's worth the extra outlay for the Capri... just to avoid every BO-reeking pub bore you encounter telling you that Princess Anne had one.

Issigonis wasn’t a very good designer. 

GM did not "kill Saab".
Saab was loosing money hand over fist way before the GM days and I think GM did a sterling trying to keep Saab a going concern all the way up until GM went bankrupt themselves and Saab was collateral in bailout agreement. After the fact, Saab - Spyker  just couldn't stay afloat due to politics, an ageing line-up and a rushed final product that failed to capture the mass markets imagination with multiple failed buyout attempts by the Chinese and a Russian. I know GM didn't help with the brand. They damaged it's reputation by introducing that Saabaru and the 9-7X, they shouldn't be blamed for the death of Saab. It was always gunna happen in the end.
