  1. If that spare sender you're holding is the one that came in the spares boxes, I may be able to shed some light. When I had the MK1, the sender failed. Part was obsolete, but managed to get what I think may have been a MK2 sender from a Vaux dealer (name escapes me) who also specialised in old/obsolete Vaux parts. They also supplied the blanking rubber, which I assumed was to blank of the stub for the fuel return on an injected or diesel MK2. I fitted the new sender to my MK1 with the blank as the MK1 was carbed. When the MK1 was scrapped I pulled the sender off as it was quite new. That spare may even be for a diesel - I don't know, it just got me out of a hole at the time and worked perfectly. So yes, the spare may well be the right one. I've never changed the one on your car as it worked perfectly. Guessing being laid up for years has done something to the sender. AA badge looks proper. Definitely the right choice. 👍
  2. Good job changing the filter. Who knows, judging by the state of the big gasket, it maybe be the original. Certainly very old. How did you manage with the wrong small gasket? Make one up? And the $64,000 question - was there much metal on the pan's magnet?
  3. Always was a really nice smooth drive. As said before, big improvement on the carbed MK1 I had before. I'm a big believer in regular changes for oil and filter as most of my mileage is in town - so about every 4 or 5 thousand miles it gets replaced. The old maxim - oil is cheap, engines are expensive. When I scrapped the MK1 the engine ran perfectly, used no oil and was quiet. Unfortunately galloping tin worm killed it. You know it's time to go when welding patches on patches.
  4. Bit late with this, - have been away - but congratulations on the MOT pass. Also glad she drives well after all those years in storage. Didn't doubt the engine, but wondered how autoboxes stood up to being idle so long. Good to see all is well. Do you intend dropping the pan and changing it's filter? As for the cozy battery cover, I'm afraid that's not a standard fitting on the Carlton. Though it is a GM/Vaux item. Over 20 years ago I was doing a bit of temping between jobs at a company on Portbury Dock that handled the landing of new Tigras and Corsas off the boats from the factory in Spain. Sometimes we also used to store one offs of other Vaux models before they went to dealers. Anyway, Vectras, Omegas, etc had the battery covers which I thought were a good idea for the cooler months. Anyway, one or two of these covers might have, ahem, fallen off one of these cars as the batteries were disconnected for storage. Somewhow it then ended up in my pocket. That cover on yours was originally fitted to my MK 1, before being put on the MK 2. Old style AA badge - personally, not my thing. The square one, yes. Had the older style one on my P4, and it looked right at home. Square lines of Carlton would be better with square badge. Well done for resurrecting the old bus and improving her.
  5. Same here. I enjoyed wafting in it, not interested screaming around in any of the cars I've had. Had some nice luxury barges in my time, inc a P4 Rover 90 and Triumph 2000. D249 FWS replaced a Mk1 carbed, manual 2000 Carlton. The driving experience is very different for two apparently similar cars. Having injection and auto meant an effortless, smooth ride - a car I always enjoyed driving. Fingers crossed for the test on 15th.
  6. 23 minutes of Carlton porn. Grab your popcorn. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/classic/uks-rarest-cars-1984-vauxhall-carlton-2000-cd-sole-survivor/
  7. [Drool] Or maybe one from Korea. No, your eyes don't deceive you. Maybe the 1500 version may be a little pedestrian. Bear in mind the tie up between GM and Daewoo (an early UK Daewoo was originally a Mk2 Astra) going back many years.
  8. She looks better than ever now with those wings done and the proper wheel centres. Only advice - if you haven't done so, please get some decent security fitted. Or she'll be gone in 60 seconds. The autoboxes may not be available, but overhaul kits are. https://www.oregonperformancetransmission.com/product/OPT-TH180-RB.html The box worked perfectly before being laid up, but I'm not sure how they cope with not being used for 14 years. Would guess it could use a new filter by now.
  9. I think Germany is the best hunting ground due to the strong following, numbers sold there and because the later facelifts were all Gerry built. Not sure if the original cassette holder would have been a Fischer C Box or something similar. I would try to ask a question re. splitter and tape holder on the Rekord E forum with some help from Google translate - though when I've been on there a few speak excellent English. They probably know who is breaking these or who has stock. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314225102616?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338364431&toolid=11000&customid=Cj0KCQiAvqGcBhCJARIsAFQ5ke6lQPOVetj5QcfCrrG2M9slxo-zVHApl5EM2-twKakXdR0NXb5ZFyIaAp08EALw_wcB&gclid=Cj0KCQiAvqGcBhCJARIsAFQ5ke6lQPOVetj5QcfCrrG2M9slxo-zVHApl5EM2-twKakXdR0NXb5ZFyIaAp08EALw_wcB German Ebay turns up some beauties like this - https://www.ebay.de/itm/115593210025?hash=item1ae9e468a9:g:socAAOSw1UZjW7UN&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoA5EZYtiyu6Q8Ndc46XHwUAJUPQfFAJCezalEJXnm6h7zH%2BCCVTDdwx31oUhUfYssZJuMwcrd%2FaSMLDQZ8z5QkIuE209V1REd54alo7VL7Yw4bhgohs4G3YUia1ZVtwwPhk8ThOovs5G71T3Q0A1NzxbQ9V5P%2B5V%2B8OzsAquJa%2F5qnV7Kc3gUAl0plnvG1GZmZ4wWvBx%2BkGdvXlyp1RI3qQ%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR5qhjuCZYQ Got lots of goodies on there. I think your Paypal could get a battering. Good luck!
  10. Looks like blower may be a Hella part. Some listed in Germany, but out of stock. https://opel-shop.com/produkt/neu-original-opel-rekord-e-commodore-c-geblaesemotor-heizung-motor-geblaese/ Also German Ebay has tons of stuff for Rekord Es. New engine blocks, new panels - some rare stuff on there. Germany is the place for Carlton spares. https://www.ebay.de/itm/255384386441?hash=item3b76187b89:g:zpIAAOSwzHNiCPnz&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4JAj73y5SEhrB0R6JrjGmYG5VdEtUeuIkDOaO4irUXRAmYVNzE8OeF3VyaDLap0bLVopoEUaXCBFgO2r%2FvZjN1DVyhaxyVIAWotaWGQAgLg6PHni44atpOLge9L4AOj52M6YS6YNHBbF3Oi1LTA3qAd1dFeCSOtKxx0ozp%2BiKnhYO7ZhYlvk5m5h%2BLn7PkELSrTm1Xa6Q1%2FP33zRyFXtlgUU6wCaOafpQb9yYQuV1be5J64ynP0xIcWmCIUYP0A%2BC01ZLifA7%2BaCjHBtH7LHJFwze9OFdYpaGzLNiq3OwzJc|tkp%3ABk9SR9T0hbOZYQ
  11. @sutty2006 Hello Sir. For splitter are you referring to the plastic trim at the bottom of front spolier? If yes, I'm afraid the car came without it when I bought it. Will admit that a trim item like that will be hard to source. There's still a big following for these cars in Germany and there is a very helpful forum for what they call the Opel Rekord E. Someone may have one or be able to point you in the direction. http://www.opel-rekord-e.de Yes, would really like to see her when she's finished. Never regretted selling a car this much before. Was almost like a family bereavement after owning so long. Wouldn't miss the wife that much. 🙂 Good luck with everything.
  12. I don't visit this site too often, but it's interesting to see the progress of my old Carlton that I bought in 2003 and sold to Mr Sutty this year. Very pleased that this wonderful old car is finally getting the attention she deserves. Really nice car to drive, much quicker and smoother than the carbed Mk1 2000 that I had before. A few points; When I was reading through this thread I read that the stat cover had a crack and read further on that Mr S was desperately seeking a replacement. I would have contacted him to say there is a new one ion the boot, but too late as I see he already bought one before discovering the spare I supplied. Re. auto box. Can't say how well the box has fared after approx 14 years of being in storage, but when I was driving her, the gearbox worked faultlessly. I don't know how autos respond to long periods of inactivity. That's my 10mm spanner you found under the bonnet - and I want it back!!! Seriously that spanner may have been lost under the bonnet since she was new. Reason I say this is because it looks very old and rusty (not the car!). Twenty years ago I was between jobs and did a bit of temp work at Portbury Docks where the Corsas and Tigras were landed and stored from Spain. We were all issued with similar 10mm spanners to disconnect the batteries while the cars were in storage. These spanners got dropped and lost regularly and it was quicker to get another than delve into the engine bay to look for it. So it may be from when the car was stored before sale when it came into UK from Germany. The fan motor seems a bit of a pain. It used to work better on faster speeds, but did squeal a bit when running slower. Good luck with the project, Mr S. I'lll be watching with interest and drop in from time to time to see how things are going. She's thrown up a few surprises, but I suppose that's old cars for you.
