It seems that my little Volvo has just dumped its brake fluid into the footwell, just in time for the Rustival thing. let’s see how well the post works. . . . . .

F…ing car. just spent 45 minutes trying to work out why the wipers stopped working. Fuses - no, Scan - no, wiggle switch- no repeat all - no, engine running- no bonnet open on the catch!

I have a pair of sealskinz socks for inside my trials boots. They work a treat, lovely dry warm feet, but with the odd sensation of the insole floating around in the water sloshing around inside the boot!

This is definitely true, I did some of the free samples and failed miserably

Six Cylinders Motoring Notes - I am having a Ford Day!

Decompressor lever to stop, the clutch is centrifugal so you can’t stall it (or shouldn’t be able to) the plastic tube is the carb fuel return - there’s no float bowl, instead the pump pumps continually with the excess fuel weiring over into the large return pipe. 30 mph is doable down a steep hill, 40 if you lift the engine off the wheel! But generally 18 or so on the flat -

What tool put the rocker cover on with normal bolts and then put the manifolds on and installed the engine? no way can I get a socket or spanner on the bolts to get the cover off, or even drill the bolt heads off.

Having cooked an XUD several times, each time it needed a head skim and the cam shaft bearings line bored because the heads warp, new gasket and belt and it was fixed. That was about £400 several ( probably 20ish) years ago i have a spare head with camshaft kicking around as well as some other 305 parts like lights if you’re interested.

is one of the pulleys rotating slowly on the shaft? - perhaps the key has fallen out, or some engines use a taper fit on the cam shaft and rely on the nut being tight to keep things aligned

I've booked a spot - its not that far from me, so will be there in my yellow Volvo

Having driven a maestro 1300 in my first job and being amazed at its handling when compared to my Renault 4 at the time its interesting to follow your work. Thinking about the thermostat position : Where you have fitted it you may not get any heat until the thermostat is open - the upper position would allow warm coolant flow to the heater before the engine gets to temperature to aid demisting. the only reason I could see for the two positions may be climatic variants - if you're somewhere very cold (arctic) you may want the engine to warm up as quick as possible (no heater till warm), I read somewhere that its often best not to use the heater otherwise the windscreen can ice up when really really cold
