    Loving the project!
The note about the fuel gauge reminds me of my Spridget. TADTS I found out the hard way and it ran out of fuel on me. Luckily a passing motorist helped me give it a push so that I could free wheel down a hill towards the petrol station.
Once we got it rolling I went to jump in but found the diminutive door was not dissimilar to clambering through a cat flap. Nearly wiped myself out.

It did prove to be a great little fun car.

A fine piece of master geekery!!
That would have been the 9 year old me quoting that to my father from the brochure, but also pointing out that he should be buying the Manta.
The mk2 was a decent car as was the 1990/1 2.0i GL. Nice spec and a good turn of speed from its gruff 8V engine.

Well the moment finally came where I could go out for a test drive.  I chucked some basic tools in the boot and set off onto tarmac for the first time in 26 years.

On the first drive I found a few niggles but nothing serious.  Made some timing and tuning adjustments along the way.  Returned to the workshop and fixed the niggles over the course of an afternoon.

I've since completed a second drive and covered about 50 miles or so without issue.  Very pleased with the car and will be sorting out some proper video footage now I know it works.
Engine is really smooth and quiet, pulls well and happily does 70 and over without issue Gearbox was the right call, put it in 5th and its so much better at higher speeds, think its about 3k rpm or less at 70mph  Suspension is very soft and smooth, no clunks or noises so far No serious rattles or fitment issues from the interior  Can't feel any driveline vibration which was a relief as the prop and gearbox are not original Diff seems happy, there is a slight whine as you use the engine to slow down in 3rd Possible slight rattle from the exhaust over some bumps   Electrics seem fine Temp is a quite low, I have a feeling the thermostat has stuck open, will investigate in future Even the speedo is accurate despite having a different gearbox  Not used a drop of oil or coolant and so far there are no leaks Overall its not really put a foot wrong and has run a treat.  Very very happy.  There's a lot that can go wrong when all these bits have to start working.  Other restorations have had me back in the workshop for days fixing issues.  Pleased and relieved that my own car just worked!
Here's some engine running stuff from the workshop after I'd finished some timing adjustments.

Hi all, I’ve been more a lurker than contributor, and realised I’ve not introduced myself. This forum is my essential reading and my thanks goes to everyone who contributes. A brilliant range of vehicles and superb dedication.
I’m plodding away at my own little collection of stuff trying to get it in good shape by tinkering away.
That’s been my escape in these lockdown times - a chance to escape and get some time out. Don’t get me wrong, my family are great, but we all need that bit of space.

I got a bit disillusioned with new cars, and getting rinsed by depreciation. I don’t have a company car and wouldn’t want one, but I do quite a bit of travel. my solution is to hire cars as and when, which costs my employer less than the mileage money. A double whammy as I get to play hire car bingo and I get to own cars I want rather than cars that suit my job.
Currently I’ve got an Audi S8 (D2) which I’m rather attached to. It’s super comfy and good at wafting. The chocolate gearbox has melted so wafting is rather minimal. This months job is to pull the engine and box to get it rebuilt and resume wafting. The collection was worthy of an AS collection thread - bought sight unseen via eBay. I lost the auction but dropped the seller a message in case the sale failed. It did and I put in a cheeky offer.

A 205 restoration in the garage which to be fair has stalled. I need to get that going as it was a great little car for blasting around. I want to build it to be a standard looking car.

    Happy spannering
    Cheers,

Bad luck with that housing. I repaired similar damage on the housing of my AH-Sprite using JB Weld and it worked well. Used a dremmel to get to good metal then applied the JB-Weld. Once dry I shaped it and sanded the mating surface flat. Worked well and I never had any issues.

My first ever restoration was a Morris 1000 which I bought as a 16 year old.  It was a pretty extensive mechanical and body rebuild.
The big day arrived and it was time to start it. It started okay but the smoking throttle and choke cables were a give away that I’d forgotten to fit the engine earth strap.
