If you do decide to move on the brown Nova, change your user name to whiteyugo and have no regrets.

Dunno, smells a bit UKIP that.

Joking aside, I remember when I had to crush my RAV4 that @brownnova suggested I could well end up regretting it. I'm about 3 years on from that and it's only now I get the odd inkling of a regret about it. More so when I'm trying to park the thing I have now. It was quite cool to have a 3 door 4x4. I kind of do miss it, but space and a heavily pregnant wife were against me on it.

If you get shot of it, in a few years you'll be in a position to get another one. Well, if there is one to have. There might be, but then how much is it going to be and what guarantee is there that the next Brown Nova is rust free? If it's crispy in the future are you any better off getting shot now?

To echo @Talbot the car, if you (and you should) keep it needs to be somewhere dry. Whether that's in a garage or in the thing Michael Jackson used to sleep in, it needs to be dry. I've had the Lada out in the weather under the absolutely wrong thing thinking it was waterproof. It wasn't, and the bad rust is worse and the not so bad rust is now bad.

  2. Great thread revival.

Put it on stands today as I’m spending Friday and Saturday welding on it. The front wing is coming off and I’m setting to the hole in the passenger floor. I’ve gone around it and marked down areas of concern. There’s nothing new, and it’s pretty much as I remember it to be. I just need a magnet to ascertain how much filler is on the arches, as if they’re just filler I need to buy repair panels.

I also thought, for a laugh, that I’ll start it. I’ve never known it run, albeit it was bought as not running with no brakes or clutch (clutch pedal is rock hard down). I’ve no petrol but I thought fuck it, let’s see if it runs on vodka. I have no vodka. But I have poitin. I turns, but no spark. There endeth the experiment as it’s neither here nor there if it starts. It turns which is good. As either way an engine will need to be rebuilt, and it’ll either be a K Series or a Lada lump.

That said I found a thread on another site where someone has the same idea of using these Mazda MX5 boxes for other applications due to cost (as the boxes are like £40). I’ve done rough calculations, think I’ve mentioned them, the MX5 clutch is the same diameter as what the Rover uses. Only issue is the spigot bearing placement. But that’s at least towards the end of the year problem.

Agreed, outrageously expensive fines is the way to stop it.

£100 fine is an annoyance for most, not a deterrent.

My unpopular opinion would be more enforcement cameras - particularly on traffic lights and busy roundabouts. But I'd happily accept it if they blanketed all urban areas to prosecute and monetise all the arsehole drivers who blatantly ignore the rules of the road.

Michael Winner would regularly drive in bus lanes and park outside the place he was going to on double yellows. The money he'd get in a fine was offset for getting to where he needed to get to on time and less of a walk for him.

People say when they win the lottery they wouldn't tell anyone but there would be noticeable changes. For me, if I won the lottery or a load of money, I would do exactly what Winner did.

Points on your licence would be best assuming it’s actually enforced. Too many company car drivers treat parking fines as an expense.

There is too much of a loop hole with that. Which normally 12 points means you lose your license, you can get more than that and still keep it.

    One such case: https://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/9607354.speeding-tony-pulis-spared-driving-ban/

There is another one where a woman in London had about 30 points on her license and still hadn't lost it.

Money, really, is the only way to get results here.

Better a percentage of the vehicle’s list price when new.

10% of the vehicle's value now, or 10% of the vehicle's value when new, or 10% of your wage last year. Whichever is higher.

Can't be too unfair to the self employed who work cash in hand.

I agree, that's why it needs to be written into the law as a mandatory element.  As I was saying about the penalties being rubbish...?

They moved fairly quickly to ban the XL Bully dogs. So when there is a political point to be made or the will to make a change it can be done fairly quickly.

But of course, wasn't that gobshite Zak Goldsmith done for speeding or a driving ban this week? If they think they're likely to fall foul of the rules they'll sit on any change to them.

Had a bit of spare time, so I have been attempting to turn the Subaru filler into a Rover one.......

Firstly weld up the hole on the back for a random valve/breather thing that only later Subarus have and remove the flange that bolts to the body....

    IMG_20240318_142848910.jpg.f57abb9d7bfcff77f9a38438dfe0c214.jpg

Made a slightly crap copy of the flange on the end of the filler that has the retaining bolts, I used the original  and pretty disgusting looking gasket to get roughly the right shape IMG_20240318_115014981.jpg.6424479f5f251d0bad6a7b37a5b50865.jpg

Flange created, its scruffy but it will do (and it will tidy up a bit in due course).

    Trial fit....

    IMG_20240318_145719789(1).jpg.88c03ee989e187405e975e2517650cf5.jpg

Next was trying to trial fit the neck and the flange in place in the car, this resulted in cutting off a slightly bent end from the filler neck and welding in a straighter 4 inch section, so it lines up with the original hose.

Kinda works, excuse the blur (frikin camera phone doesn't like focusing on things more than 5 inches away!) but it demonstrates what I am trying to do hopefully!

Top end in place and yes the hose clamp will be going and the tabs will be welded in place but for the sake of getting things to line up I need to trial all the individual parts first.

Wrongness! Might have to amend that, what should it say in place of Subaru? RohvA! Or maybe Undeaded Petril Ownly....

    Thats all for now....

    I hate you. You’re inspirational.

Joking aside, that’s great work with the Subaru filler. There has been someone on the Rover 800 Faceache page selling “new” ones and they just simply don’t fit, especially as they rub on the wheel.

Its good to know that alternatives exist!

  8. The best car Ford has ever made has been the Transit van. The rest are fucking dogshite, or rot away before they have chance to turn white like the dogshit of old used to do.

Can’t agree with @twosmoke300 enough. Reliable does not mean maintenance free.

The Rover K Series was 20 years ahead of its time. Any engine can (and does) suffer OMGHGF at any age. The materials and techniques at the time though, along with garages treating all aluminium engines the same as old cast iron ones, gave it a bad name. Power to weight etc, along with the techniques used, didn’t get matched for 20 years after its introduction.

The most fun anyone can have driving is driving a Peugeot 107 at 60mph down twisting B roads.

Colin McRae is more famous for crashing than driving ability.

on that note: Anyone with a “If in doubt flat out” or “Dude I almost had you” sticker from McRae or Paul Walker on their car deserves having it crushed. Along with their testicles.

    Hi,

I'm new here, but a regular over at mg-rover.org forum. If you need any technical help, let me know what you require as I've got all technical documents one may ever need :) Would hate to see yet another 800 bite the dust, though I do understand your reasons absolutely (being a parent, financial bits, etc.).

Thank you and welcome to Autoshite!

Edit: Do you have the same username over on the MG Rover forum @rovik88? I've got vague recollections of seeing that name aside posts regarding K Series engines/cars?

  10. So for an update:

    • It's still there
    • Had no communication from the "buyer" either
    • I've not been round to it

I have though found the folder that's meant to have the wiring diagrams for it. I have Friday off to sort some house stuff out in preparation for the Lada work which will be starting next week. I think, possibly, I am going round Sunday but I'm waiting for my wife to dictate tell me if we're going somewhere or not. If not, then I'm going to the Rover. If I am going there then I'd like to think somewhere between Good Friday and Easter Monday I'll have an opportunity to go and tinker with it. I'm going to look at the folder this week, so I may tap you up for this @Mr Pastry if I think I'm reading gobbledegook.

I am trying to write down a list of jobs for the Lada, concentrating more on the bodywork side first then mechanics will happen after that, but that's Friday's job really so I can properly poke and prod it. It's looking like I'm going to have gaps in weekends where there wouldn't be enough work to warrant a full day on it, or I'll be waiting to raise cash for bits or waiting for delivery of them which will stop work. These aren't a lot of days, and they are just single days. So that would possibly allow me "full" days to sort the Rover in to some sort of condition that is better than what it is now.

V6  Alfa Romeo engine in a 2CV. It is in Dutch, so subtitles could well be needed. Ironically when they are on and the car accelerates it says there is music. Being a Alfa V6 that is true.😄

It's in Dutch but you can kind of get the gist of it.

"I'm a mad cunt who put a V6 in it. It has perfect weight distribution as I had to put the gearbox in the back. It's hard to get insurance on but it's possible. But when you see it in action, it doesn't feel mad, it feels right".

Well, every day is a schoolday! Strange setup, why does work in series rather than just using both 12vs in parallel? I would have assumed that double the cranking current capacity would be just as good as double the voltage?

No idea. Think it has something to do with cold starting that it benefits from having the two batteries rather than one.

The main relay and the fuel pump relay are shown separately.  Possibly they are in the same casing, but they have separate power supplies.

The main relay is supplied direct from the battery, and feeds the fuel ECU and the injectors.

The fuel pump relay  is supplied from the ignition switch, and just feeds the pump, via an inertia switch.

Since the ECU appears to be operating and the pump isn't, this points to the ignition switch?

So the Main relay has two relays inside it. One for the pump, one for the ECU. It had shown signs of being wet before. I think a friend said the fuel relay looked to be a bit sticky, but there is also a "spare" fuel pump in the boot. I'm inclined to think, especially with bogging down issues it had before I bought it, the pump is FUBAR.

I get your gist, as Mr pastry says it would be good to know for certain whether or not it does have an immobiliser from factory

(Well, if it's got an aftermarket immobiliser that could be a different kettle of fish but let's assume not unless you've found any traces of one!?)

I do believe the VIN based EKA is a bit of an urban myth. It might be prudent to contact the company who hold the data obtained from Rover when they went under who should know for sure. I'm pretty sure they'll sell you the code for tuppence if you prove your right to it.

Fully appreciate this is a lot more hassle than you'd like but hopefully we can all help you get somewhere with it if a sale is to no avail so far 🤞

I think the VIN based EKA is total bollocks too. But it's no harm to try either. I found that company I think that would provide the EKA code, think it was £20 to get it. I don't imagine there would be an immobilizer on the vehicle though as there is no indication as to one being primed either. You know, like a light on the dash that flashes. That's my assumption really.

Thing is, this month anyway, I've no money to put towards it. It's all budgeted on the Lada in terms of getting steel for it and building a welding cart to actually weld it.

I can't believe I mixed this thread after it got moved to the main section.

Did you ever find the wiring diagrams for it?

There's most likely a joint point you could test for continuity at for the park/neutral switch? And if so link accordingly. These fucking schoolboy rover electronics teachers who put all this daft unproven tech in it need their heads wobbled.

If you find them in still more than happy to trawl through and give you some ideas.

I know it's turned out to be a piece of shit but a running or at least trying to run piece of shit is worth a lot more than a non running piece of shit 🤣🤣.

This.  If we could just see a wiring diagram, we could maybe understand what is going on and offer some useful advice.  A professional would start with a diagram if they didn't know the vehicle because, er, that's the right way to do it.

I  can't believe that the electronics in a Rover of that age are particularly complex - not too clever perhaps, but not complex.  It probably isn't an electronic fault as such - far more likely to be a bad connection, or a bad sensor or switch somewhere.  It just needs a logical approach.  Frankly, given the level of computer and electronic expertise on the the forum I'm surprised that no-one can get their heads around it.

Ignition switch and park/neutral switch have been suggested, which are both good shouts.  Ignition switch isn't likely to be complicated, or difficult to access.  Park/neutral switch may be buried, but will probably operate a relay (which is one reason why we need a diagram) in which case it can be nobbled.

I know none of this helps when it's cold and dark outside and the thing won't start, but don't make it harder than it needs to be.

Fairly sure I did. I'll have to find them again though.

I started with the main relay. Took that out, resoldered it, I think the fuel part of it doesn't work as it doesn't prime the fuel pump but that's an aside. The ECU light had remained on before the resolder, and it was dangling down so it has been fucked with before. The ECU was checked for dry joints and it returns no fault lights or codes. The ECU light on the dashboard goes off. So as far as the ECU is concerned everything is fine. So it's from the ECU onwards, which would either be the stuck starter or neutral switch on the gearbox. I've twatted the starter several times and it's not done anything. I've not tried jumping that either. So, maybe, I will give that a go if I remember to put whats needed in the car before I go to see it again. The neutral switch, I think, is the only thing that hasn't been properly removed and checked. But like I said it's buried in the center console and it was being a prick. I don't like it when things are being a prick and I'm in a bad mood, shit gets broken.

    14 hours ago, RoverFolkUs said:

@St.Jude I've returned here so as not to clutter up the for sale thread.

Did you get anywhere with an EKA code? That's definitely worth a try I think, project nigel *seemed* to get that red one running after entering the code using the door lock barrel, and then unplugged a control module afterwards to permanently disable it (?) - a bit like old Citroens with their keypad immobilisers..

Yeah I saw that and I tried it based on the VIN. Didn't really do anything if I'm honest but I don't think the EKA applies to the Mk1 or this middle of the gap version.

  15. There's a lot to reply to here.

I've not sent the money back, and he hasn't been in touch either.

I don't particularly care where it ends up or who wants it. The problem here is it needs a trailer. You could well be the lucky fucker who puts the key in and it starts first time but if you feel that lucky then do the lotto first and then get a trailer with the winnings.

I suspect that the neutral selector (not the Parking thing) would probably be the cause of this. It's the one thing I've not really looked in to properly. It's buried in the center console, I made an attempt to access it but couldn't work out how to get the massive plastic thing off without breaking it. Brittle plastics, 80's plastic, and me with a temper aren't conducive to a great working relationship. All I could do was wiggle it and move it back/forward. What doesn't help is that the car falls between the Mk1 and Mk2 versions. The neutral selector on a Mk1 should be under the battery (according to the books), but on this one it's missing. Which would mean it's located in the Mk2 position of being under the gearstick. Also the ignition coil you'd think it would have is the wrong sort for what you would think it's on.

It just needs to run, and if it ran I could move it and park it and through a tarp over it and and come back to it when the Lada is further along or done. But even now I still can't be fucked with it to the point it almost hurts. I've put it up on the for sale section.

  16. The buyer hasn't messaged me since last Thursday with just an "OK". Went on the banking app to refund him but that's going to take time as it doesn't show his details and I need to involve the bank to refund them.

Can't remember if I said this before (CBA looking either) but someone messaged me a month ago about buying the car, or offering more for it to get it. I messaged them yesterday seeing if they're still interested. I think it's somewhat cooled down from "I'll give you more for it now M8" to "well can I send a mate to look at it and see if it's worth my time". Think I'm as well to tell this clown to fuck off too.

I went on cartakeback and they'll give the huge figure of £228 for it. It's a kicker. But then part of me feels this might be a better way to go as the exhaust alone would recoup the difference. Issue there is while I do have somewhere to store stuff, I currently have the seats to my Lada and the various bits from the ZR I broke for the Lada.

So I think really, realistically speaking, I'm back to either just calling the scrap man and taking the haircut or investing more time in to getting it started and running.
