Popped into a Halfords off the North circular the other day to garb some mirror glass for the little Renault and found this peddle cycle with a motor and number locked to the cycle rack outside. I thought some here might appreciate it. Very much a used classic complete with lashings of oil and grease and a gaffer taped seat. Lovely.

Half a packet of Polos with outer paper removed and rolling round cubby hole under radio fits nicely into the unoccupied fag lighter socket where it's silver paper shorts out the 12 V making intermittent sizzling noises and smoldering plastic with hint of mint smell unable to remove it whilst driving on M3 to job interview as it's also hot as the center of a very hot thing till some tiny inaccessible fuse give up and Polos cool down and become stuck in solidified plactic.  Lateness caused by not having anywhere to plug GPS into but I didn't want the job anyway.

The OR came back the other day from a specialist (more of that soon) who's done some tweaking and fault rectifying (I think he said carb off, gaskets, jet changes etc) then a rolling road  'thing' with print out. It's gone from an R6 beating 1.94BHP to a rip-roaring, BSB Championship contending 4.40BHP.
The Chopper is probably still faster with my fat arse on it, but hoping to get out and about on the Suzuki and ideally go to a bike meet soon.

    Motorbiking kit can be tricky...
The lack of variation in glove sizes in particular has been a pain, because of my slightly odd sized hands. Despite living in Norfolk, I have 4 fingers and a thumb on each hand, and in the usual locations, but I do have broad hands and shortish fingers. So I have to buy big gloves and then the fingers are too long.
Last year, because the weather improved so suddenly at the end of February, I bought some summer gloves from Amazon because of quick delivery and they're OK, but not the best fit. They did me a year, but their cheapness is also showing in the wear. My winter gloves fit great off the shelf and are lovely though, so it is doable.
I've gone to every bike shop locally, and no summer weight leather gloves fit me properly. I bought some that were a really good fit on my hand and tight enough on the wrists, but they only fit reasonably on two fingers, the other three were like half an inch too long.
But... After telling the Mrs to whine on my behalf on Facebook (I don't do social meeja) we found a local craftsman who works with Leather who took them to bits and tailored them to fit perfectly. Like a glove, as it were.
    For £24.
I'm really very happy about that.

Right then here we go. For years I have had a small hankering for a simple motorcycle with character, this small hankering seems to have got bigger the older I have got. Was really looking at, and really liking the Enfield's even took a Meteor out for a test ride. That confirmed two things,
    1. I definitely want a simple, relaxed bike that is able to do a few miles.
    2. At the moment I can't afford an Enfield.
Back burner time.... until a member of this parish chucked a for sale thread up for a Russian Ural! Now I'll be honest I hadn't really thought about one of these simply because they mostly come with a sidecar attached. A bit of a Google, a chat with my lovely wife and the wheels were set in motion. She arrived Friday. I do like the much older (60/70s ) style of the boxer BMWs and this is not far off that. I know she needs a bit of tinkering but just a quick gander at her shows everything is so easy to get to so away I go.
    Quick list.
    New headlight (supplied)
    New seat cover (supplied)
    New indicators (supplied)
    New battery
    New throttle cables
    New air box pipework
    Clean carbs
New rear tyre at least, most likely both as they are the finest that Russia produced 20+ years ago.
That's really about it. I have decided to keep her in 'used' condition with just a bit of cleaning T cut, autosol and polish. I found an old battery and with the aid of a jump pack she turned over very nicely. Below are a few of the 'now' pictures so you can see the areas I will be addressing.
The aim is to get her through the MOT in time for the Bristol distinguished gentlemans ride next May.

Received email thanks , unfortunately since first interest i am overloaded at the moment, 3 cars in a 2 car space house hold is already a problem, 4 cars would cause severe neighbour relationship stress.
But please put more pics up, temptation can always lead to advanced man maths solutions.

haha you joke, but I do genuinely want to bring some of my most powerful lamps to the FoD and light them up at night in the middle of the paddock/field, I can imagine it looking quite cool/surreal, this massively bright light in the middle of an empty large open space, like some really luminous shrine!

I also have these beasts, but specifically the one in the middle

which is a 1000w CID lamp, (Compact Source Iodine Daylight), outputting a mighty 85000 lumens in an incredible *8* degree beam (to half intensity), you can literally set fire to things at short range with this bastard

I mean the pictures really dont it just justice, but heres a couple anyhow!

I am really quite pleased of this close up picture i managed to take of the arc tube at full power, (even if it meant melting my face to take it) to think theres 1000W in that tiny arc gap!

just bonkers! as you can imagine its quite hot running, heres a just after pulling power shot

I understand that @davidfowler2000has a rather beefy inverter setup so if I can devise some control gear for this beast that does not literally weigh 15Kg then yeah I am totally bringing it to the FoD at some point to send morse code messages to the ISS as it goes overhead!
(or at least I want to point it out the window here at home and see how far the beam goes!)

and if out-and-out lumen output is what you want, then I have the setup to run *2* of these 2000W Metal halide lamps

who's combined output would be almost half a million lumens! (400,000-440,000) to give you some perspective, your ordinary 100W lightbulb outputs 1320 lumens...

but you would need a 5000W mains supply, and I dont think the FoD quite has that! but its probably only a matter of time before @Six-cylinder helps himself to some sort of 6 cylinder diesel generator he saw being flogged cheap somewhere

Running loads better now, so adjusted the front brake (which is still crap, just slightly less so) tightened up the rear light unit and mucked about with a couple of things. It managed to pull 45 in 2nd (of 3) which was quite an achievement, but it's not made for flat out riding.  Think it's time to put the old Vespa PX screen on it so it's more useable in crap weather.

The gears are only pegged to each other via a dog drive system so you will always get play between them

Some lost motion, lash, play or whatever term you like to use, is common in most automotive gear trains.  Whether it is acceptable will depend on how much there is.  It is however usually less than can be tolerated in chain systems.  If you can inspect the gears and the shaft bearings and all look ok and there's no play in the shafts, it is probably in the TADTS category.

I think about 95% all there. Some doubled up parts.
I took engine out to get it home.
Body panels terrible. Anyone have any panels in a shed somewhere?
Will see how far my enthusiasm goes.
    V5 and frame match !
Only 14 previous owners. Yes fourteen.

Am i right in thinking these early engines unrestricted are upwards of 25 hp.

Some history, i bought it off son of man who has had it since 2002. Son said it was a project bike.
Today i started on engine expecting the worst.

Looks like the engine is ok, maybe.
He had been in here, all waterways clear and clean, turns over with compression.
Looks new piston and clean bore.
I love hondas, all the bolts came out easy.
Maybe i will not be splitting bottom end and just hoping all is well.
This will be a slow burn project.

In a previous century I worked for some French company which involved driving/operating mobile laboratories so I availed myself of an moped (Mobylette) found in a Belgium skip and tied it in the little gap between the 3 phase generator and laboratory. Being constrained by drivers hours I could stop almost anywhere (this being the continent and not UK) and pop off into the countryside for a beer, frits n mayo and spot of fishing in whatever local lake/river was available - foreigner on old Mobylette being welcomed like a long lost friend in most of rural France/Belgium  It sort of becomes addictive so much later I'm still doing similar things.  Said Mobylette is that green thing.

Well, now I have decided my Invacar Mk12e (Brian) has far too much power for me along with a far too high top speed. I have lately acquired a drop in performance from 50MPH to 30MPH with a displacement drop of 148CC from 197CC to 49CC.
The idea is to give me some freedom of the roads whilst at the shows I attend with friends after having been steersman on their steam contrivances. You see, I like a little freedom to pop to the shop and grab a Zider or three (maybe more?), but after 8 hours on the road with no means of return without putting somebody out my thoughts turn to an old Cyclemaster that I wish I had never parted with.
Anyhow, long story short, not a Cyclemaster but a more capable machine altogether found its way home with me. He (Eeyore) should hang nicely from the the trailer behind the steamer and allow me the freedom of the roads once we hit the showground and also be in keeping with the surroundings!
