Slow drive down. The M25 was horrendous. However, a collection has occurred. I'm in love already!

Well as the Rover is dead it's only sensible I buy another inappropriate car as a daily. So collection caper time!
It's not breakfast time so lunch:

The chariot of choice to get us there is the venerable i10:

Journey time is approximately 2.5 hours.
I shall post updates as we go. Those observant folk will already know what it is but guesses welcome from the rest of you!

AS I bring sad news. The AS communal bike that is the Rover 25 GTI is dead.
She let go on me on the motorway on Monday night. I lost a cylinder while driving closely followed by plumes of white smoke.
I also gained some serious blowby on the dipstick which is never a good sign

Five hours later I got recovered...

I had a delve into the cylinders. Did a compression test.
    200. 200. 200. 0.
    Oh dear. Bore scope time

RIP GTI. Long live the GTI.
While I can repair this kind of failure I don't have the time or inclination with this car. However all is not lost. @sharley17194 has decided to take ownership and attempt to fix it/add it to his pile of scrap cars.

So I've had the Lexus for a week and a half and have had some time to get to know it better. Headline is that its comfortably the best car I've ever owned! Its well built, comfortable - especially at motorway speeds, and literally everything works. I've only used about 1/3rd of a tank of fuel so far and if the trip computer is to be believed then its returning about 34mpg in mixed use.
Today I removed the wheels one by one and gave them a thorough clean with the autosmart alishine cleaner which has brought them up very well. This also allowed me time to inspect the state of the discs and pads (all fine) and also check the operation of the rear caliper sliders. This is a weak spot on the car, and they are prone to seizing the bottom slider pin. The passenger side moves fine, but the drivers side seems a bit stiff, though it was parked close up to a wall so access wasn't great. I plan to strip both sides down and silicone grease the sliders to keep them working as they should, but I didn't have time today.
I've also lined up bits for an oil and filters change, pleasingly oil, oil filter, air filter and cabin filter come in under £60 which I'm not grumbling about! I'll get that done after payday and sort out the sliders at the same time.
I gave it a quick wash but it really wants a seeing to with the clay bar, there are lots of little tar speckles all over and it just wants a bit of hard work to get it up to top condition. Also, why does no-one ever clean inside the fuel filler flap? The rubber round the filler neck was covered in brown gunge and the rest of it was coated in dried mud, it looks a lot better now!
Oh, the only other thing is that it currently wears 4 mismatched budget tyres which are a bit worn. I'll probably get a set of 4 matching midranges before too much longer so at least one rear tyre is at the 3mm wear marker. Surprisingly the road noise isn't too bad on the motley budgets and it handles fine even on greasy roundabouts.
I shall end the update by saying that I have missed the best aspect of owning an auto, pulling out onto roundabouts while eating crisps. Extensive testing in a manual car has shown that you need at least 3 hands to steer, change gear and shovel crisps into your pie hole all at once, and this doesn't work and since the crisp-eating bit is non-negotiable then you either end up banging off the limiter in 1st gear or navigating the roundabout more like a hexagon - much to the alarm of other road users

It was like going to a tailors; what would sir like? I was offered a choice of complete interiors (about 6 different types, all leather of some sort, and the whole interior would be about £200-£350 depending on which) Amazing VFM. That buys a posh set of ignition leads/ dizzy cap in shad circles.
Im not in the zone for a full rip it all out replacement and just needed a some missing bits- and the weather is not currently conducive to outdoors interior swaps for this kerbside shiteist.

Although miraculously a few evenings ago it didn’t rain.

    P38 news
The section of p38 carpet/ moulded foam underlay that was hacked out during its tow truck conversion has been sourced and dispatched from a suitable supplier, and they sent me this in lieu of a tracking note 💪

Well the p38 has so far been perfectly well behaved. Priority 1 was to turn it back from a 2 seater  to a 5 seater car.
My keenness to keep it bASe made things more complicated. Theres a choice of complete p38 interiors on e bay for peanuts. They are all later model leather ones- they look nice! Maybe this was the better idea? (spoiler: YES)
I was hoping to keep it cloth- and the easiest/ laziest thing was to just lob in a rear bench and seatbelts, and forget the aesthetics. Maybe the miss matched seats tells part of its story?
There were, i discovered, a few little other bits that had been removed during its “conversion” I believe the door cards and carpet it has wouldnt have had tan cloth matched from new.  And i couldn’t find a tan cloth rear bench. And the grey cloth rear bench i did get hold of had had the integral seat belt buckles removed from it. Then from 2 other breakers I was sent the wrong buckles, and a wrong belt respectively. I had to correct an e bay trader, supposedly a P38 expert about the centre and right rear buckles being different parts, with different part numbers, despite looking outwardly identical, and not functioning if interchanged. Slave to the bASe.
All in all to be honest with this hassle I was regretting not buying a complete later leather interior, forgetting originality and binning what was in it. Slave to the bASe
Anyway, i could do all this at a later stage if i wished, and im a seatbelt away from it being a fully functional 5 seater again which is my first priority- needed ASAP.  Most normal people just buy something with the number of seats they need. I just felt it needed rescuing.
