  1. Booked the shonky Alfa 147 in for a MOT tomorrow.  Last night I went out to do the simple pre-MOT checks.

    Says me:

"Rear wiper perished (fine not testable), little more rust on the sills than i'd like (better not poke it), oh and what's this - front fogs not working.  Never mind, i'm sure that's not testable, I wonder if it's the bulbs, how do you even get to them on a 147?  I know i'll open the bonnet."

    .....

Bonnet release comes off in hand with a very loose cable.

    .....

"bumhats" (or words to that effect)

It's snapped off at the latch.  A non opening bonnet is a refusal of test I hear, so my best option now is to undo the three retaining 10mm nuts on the latch through the muff shaped grill.  Handily 4 of the 6 grill screws were finger tight and I managed to undo them from the outside.  This has given me about a 3x4inch hole to put my forearm into to try and access said nuts.

I managed to get bottom centre off, top right is going to be fun!

Totalcarcheck says it's 140.  Which is still plenty in a car that size.

Gear lever spring seems to be a common thing - my 156 wagon had the same problem.  You get used to it eventually.

I've found with pogweaseled red Alfas that they don't always respond very well to polishing.  It seems the paint fades under the lacquer, which makes it rather awkard to get back to full redness again.

    Great info thanks!

With the gear lever spring, is this usually a problem at the stick end or the gearbox end?  I think with my Multipla (cables) the stick is all waggly without the cables attached to the selector and it's the selector itself that has the centering spring.  I believe you have to withdraw the selector from the gearbox which Is as daunting as it sounds.  If I end up having to do the clutch - i'll investigate further.

i'll try and give the paint a little test tonight and see how it responds.

Is that the 150bhp version?  They shift pretty well.  Easily remappable to 190 or so, although they do then develop something of a gearbox habit.

I have no idea. How can I find out. Is it on the first page of the handbook?

Basically I won it at 10am, picked it up at 1.30pm and drove 2.5miles home. I then spent the rest of Sunday pretending to the missus that I didn't want to go outside and play cars.

It went ok but the clutch is very high, the seller said it was slipping when fully laden in top gear - I can't confirm this yet. The main problem is that the gear linkage centering spring has gone which made the notchy 6 speed slightly more difficult to engage the correct gear.

Otherwise the guy selling it was a bit of an Alfa enthusiast. He had two gtvs. One was supposed to be a low mileage, barn find with a rebuilt engine. It then had some issue with the balancer shaft which he suspected put the timing out. Anyway the point is that he had been burnt on ebay from sellers giving vague descriptions or just plain lies so wanted to advertise this with no guarantees. I went to see it before hand to try to gauge how much it would be to get through the MOT. He said the tyres were probably due on 2 wheels for instance - what it actually has is 4 pirelli Pzeros with 5-6mm of tread.

The body work needs a clay bar, cut, polish, wax but even then there's a couple of dents and scratches. It's had welding to the rear of the sills already (shock!) But the guy suspected they were due to poor quarter repairs blocking up the drain holes. They've been patched but by a reputable garage who incidently are currently restoring a lancia beta.  I'll grab a pic sometime.

It's done 164k but sounds good. The seller said it had oil changes religiously every 10k. I've no reason to doubt.

Will try to MOT this week.

  4. I've accumulated a small stock of parts to sort out the Multipla's knocking suspension and also do the timing belt and water pump. Unfortunately with three kids I rarely get the time to stop everything and fit them. I'm too tight to pay anyone else so what I needed was a practical, reliable temporary car to fill the gap while I took my time over the Multi. Of course said replacement should require minimum fettling and also be quick to sell on when I'm finished.

    Hmmm.....

I've been looking for a set of Bini steelies for my mx5 recently, having missed out on a couple of sets I gave up and bought a set of alloys instead. so obviously a set has just popped up locally at a good price.

Bargain!  When I had a mk3 Golf estate back in 2010 I found a set of 4 BRAND NEW R56 mini steels with Michelin tyres for £100 on gumtree.  I had to grind out the centres to fit the 57.1mm VAG hub but It was well worth it.  A few weeks later I ripped a huge hole in a sidewall after hitting a curb - because dumbass.

Not very shite, but pretty shit.  Reserve not met at £250 (with best offer).  Would make a slow but fun track car.  Might be able to claw back some pennies removing the leather TT seats and installing a single lightweight seat.  Also personally the first thing i'd do is remove the gash steering wheel and gauges.  Seems a dodgy buy (no reg. to check, non running due to seller diagnosed fault with alternator,  disclosed Cat C or D who knows), but still, these are still new in my eyes!

Somebody please buy it, i've already googled "Dimensions of smart roadster", "Dimensions of Transit load bay", "Camouflage paint"  Last one for the wife see.

For anyone who was interested in this, the reg. is apparently KW54KWL (comes up as a RAV4) and the seller's reserve is £650.  Considering I have three kids who need ferrying about regularly,  that's about £650 over my budget.  Not sure what to make of the reg.  The vehicle it belongs to is taxed, mot'd and insured.  Is this a poor clone to keep it on the road or a genuine sellers mistake?  Anyway for those who like to live life on the edge, it finishes at 12pm today.

Reg is actually KM54KWL.  looks clean but can't find out any information on the Cat C/D.  Ah well.  Looks like nobody gives a shizzle anyway.

  8. Mondeo:

Wasn't it some feature from factory like emergency braking. The servo preloads the system with an elephants foot load of force ready to pounce should the slightest tap be pressed on the pedal? Some bloke told me this at work.

    Focus: TADTS

Take it back to dealer to get a reflash. In early days the dealers were mega helpful with suggestions like 'you bought the wrong car M9, perhaps you wanted this fridge'. Now its acknowledged that the cal needs to be more robust. Some bloke told me this at work.

I work for Ford at their tech centre.

  9. Is the problem that a lot of us are buying cars from the bottom of the barrel.  They're unloved, undesirable, unreliable and in some cases unroadworthy.  There's always a niggling thought that 'I did the timing belt, the tension sounds a little out', 'it is using some oil', 'the turbo sounds noisy' and 'that knock on hard lock is normal I think'.  Combined with that every insurance company deems them to be immediate write offs and every other 'normal' person can't understand your choice in conveyance.

We all see something good in what we drive but most of it is crap.  it's not surprising that we see the grass is greener with a particular shit box coming up within the overdraft limit, the trouble is that it's just another patch of weeds and we've forgotten that we don't eat grass, it's just another fucking job we have to do.

I know you (@The Doctor) did the zombie thing, but why not try modifying something a little more conventionally - perhaps it can give you a new love for something a month old.  Also clean it meticulously - devil makes work for idle hands and all that.  Finally, as mentioned, a partner who doesn't give a shit about cars is a good cure too, especially when there are so many more *important things to spend money on.
