Simonsays got a reaction from Jim Bell in The second best thing out of Sweden.. I really hate exhausts
The exhaust was still blowing a bit around the clamped interference join between the cat and middle bit even wirh the clamp done up bastard-tight.
Fitting it pretty much broke me physically and mentally and I just couldnt face crawling back under the car again in the current heatwave. No way.
So I called into my local Kwik Fit. I know they come in for plenty of criticism but they were great. Straight up onto the ramps, gave it the once over and pronounced it 99% good as was. They stuck a bit more paste over the join and everything settled down nicely as it hardened. Will it last? Who knows...
Price charged for 20 minutes on the ramps?
£0
I paid £79 for the two mahoosive sections of exhaust from ebay. Kwikfit said they would have charged £250ish to supply and fit the same.

Simonsays got a reaction from Jim Bell in New members, introduce yourself here.
Don't let a total lack of skills put you off....
I started off that way two years ago and have learnt as I went along. If you're working on a second 'spare' car that isn't your main means of transport then a lot of the pressure is taken off you. Even if it's in bits on your driveway at 8pm on a Sunday evening you can still get to work come Monday morning.
I started off with nothing more than a Halfords 'your toddlers first toolkit' and a sense of wild optimism. YouTube and this forum have helped me tackle increasingly complex jobs. No nuns or kittens have died yet and I've yet to break my vehicle. Most of the tools that I've bought along the way have been bootfair finds.
As a bonus I'm now servicing and repairing my main daily driver and my lads car so I'm quids in.
Honestly, just get something cheap with some MOT to start with and get stuck in

Simonsays got a reaction from Marm Toastsmith in How do you fund your fleet
Forgive the personal nature of the question but I'm a nosey type.
The two cars that I've recently bought that would possibly count as shite have been bought with my loose change. Deposited into a piggy bank each evening and then fed into the coin-counter in the bank once a month. It mounts up surprisingly quickly in my otherwise unused savings account.
And saves me from wearing holes in my pockets from carrying coinage 'sorry mate, got no £10 notes'
I'm usually shit at saving money but this method seems to work well for me.
Also, no large withdrawals made from our joint account so has wifely approval too.
Which in my house is bloody important.

Simonsays reacted to ChinaTom in The grumpy thread
Just backing up what many have said here, and I can confirm from genuine experience that shanghai has incredible hospitals and doctors.
Sincerely hope all goes well. I will be in China for the next 3 weeks - i would offer any assistance with lingo/arrangements but shanghai hospital staff have a better command of English than most of us on here!
I won’t be in shanghai, but can be if needed.

Offer is always there mate. A nice warm home with shops and pubs abundance. Plus being in the Midlands there is easy access to North/South East and West.
There is a flat above me that has been unoccupied for a while plus plenty of rooms/flats available around the town. Just PM/call me if ever you find yourself stuck.

Simonsays got a reaction from Scruffy Bodger in Insurance renewal rip offs
Have you tried adding an experienced driver with a clean record to your policy?
Adding me to my sons policy saved about 700 quid for a years premium

Simonsays got a reaction from Scruffy Bodger in Insurance renewal rip offs
I'd start by negotiating with my existing insurers. Theres bound to be some wiggle room in their renewal quote. They just chance their arm with a high initial offer because there's always a percentage of folks that'll just renew with no questions asked

At least you can fix it by waving a lighter over the plugs. To properly fix the TT you need wave the BIC on a rag hanging out of the fuel filler. -

Simonsays got a reaction from Skizzer in Valeting / Detailing / two bucket wronguns
The day I picked up my Volvo some numpty had liberally sprayed the dash in some gopping silicone shit.
'Valeted for you m8'
It took two of us the better part of an hour to clean most of it off with hot soapy water and about 10 microfibre clothes.
Good.
What I didn't realise at the time was that there was quite a bit of over-spray of this shit onto the windscreen and windows and over the last few months this has gradually become more and more visible as white spots on the glass.
It's been an absolute bitch to clean off. Nothing seemed to have any effect at all. I even took it to a friend who is heavily into detailing his monstrous scoobydoo. He threw endless chemicals at it but.... Nothing....
I was bemoaning my fate to my wife this morning having just had the car washed and she said 'use some wire wool'
Full of worry about scratching my glass I gingerly dolloped some windowlene onto a pan scourer and oh so gently rubbed away at the stains.
They. Came. Straight. Off.
Moral of the story? There *are* times when my non-driving wife knows more about cars than me.
