dozeydustman got a reaction from chodweaver in The grumpy thread
They go there because it's convenient. McDonalds, KFC and the like were always a treat when I was a kid. Same with ding meals. They have their uses, such as the end of a knackering day when you've just moved house or get home from a long and tiresome journey. Even then, there are better options out there, such as a chicken or lamb shish kebab with a huge pile of salad and a pitta bread or a large cod from the chippy with some mushy peas & a pickled Wally (without the chips & leave the batter).
It's easy enough to blame people being overweight on inactivity and eating crap but genetics also play a big part. Since infant school I've always struggled to be 'slim', so have my parents, my brother, my maternal granddad and my paternal grandma despite being very active people. I was always the extra tall but chubby kid in the class photo. Some of my weight issue is my own fault and I don't deny this, but I'm doing something about it. Yet you get these people who are as skinny as rakes, stuff their faces all day with a load of shite, drink loads of beer, don't do much in the way of activity.

dozeydustman got a reaction from Laseraligningfoofooflanges in Skoda Favorit £700
Favorits are/were great little cars. Mate of mine had a LXiE CD wagon he got from the motor auction in Ashford for about 300 quid in 1999. It was an N plate which had had a new speedo fitted at 120,000ish (ex-taxi) but a full history. I was surprised how light it was to drive, bearing in mind I was driving Simca 1100 at the time (also from the auction). Real good load lugger.
Well bought, chap.

I did the sums a calculate. Brimmed this in Scotland yesterday and blasted to London on one tank. Brimmed it again this morning and calculated 49.5 EMPEEGEES.
Wasn’t expecting that...

I do apologise - who was that then? Someone at the Arundel get together said their wife had suddenly developed a thing for them.
EDIT: It was Stanky (I'm very tired and he was standing near you at the time!). Mrs Stanky to the beige phone please!

There was a lot of rust in mine when I bridged it back about 1986.
But I didn't have this dash ...

Visibility. Most modern cars have such huge A/B/C/D pillars and small glass area that you can't see what's around you with ease. In some cars the interior rear view mirror is about as much use as a back pocket on a sock as the rear window is so small. Granted the huge pillars do help in keeping the occupants safe in the event of a naccident.
I think some American and home-market Japanese stuff still has these on autos, last UK market car I knew had a column shifter was the Espace Mk 3 or Toyota Previa Mk2 but only with the auto in terms of regular cars, maybe Rolls-Royces still have their column selector?
I do like a manual column shift, but they are a pain in the arse when the links wear. Nearest thing we get now is the dash mounted shifter.

General mechanical simplicity and access - not single cylinder or anything stupid but an engine that you work on without plugging in a laptop and access where you don’t need to move to Chernobyl for twenty years in order to have appendages that will in the stupidly small spaces.

Sunroofs. They only exist to give you sunburn on your head & a bad neck as they reduce headroom so far you can't sit upright.

That buffeting noise you get on some cars when only one window is open. Normally if it's a rear window. Seems to be on more modern stuff than older.

Another vote for visibility, the A pillar in the V70 is half the width of the one in my wife’s Fiat 500, being an Ovlov I can’t imagine it’s exactly weak either. Overall it’s like driving in a greenhouse compared to a modern.

Fuck yes, I loathe the tank-driver feel you get in many modern cars. Does wonders when you are looking for bikers (as a biker myself!).
