Spotted TH15 GUY last night parked up, a pale grey Porsche Panamera. Didn't see the owner though.

Plate worth more than car - I read a news article about local government spending earlier that mentioned Oxford Council own 'FC 1' and it's on a Nissan Leaf, they estimate the plate's worth ten times what the car is

So...I once sold a 220 GTi to a man on eBay.
(I admit it's not exactly a Dickens-esque opening, but bear with me)
The initial signs weren't good, in so much as the eventual buyer had never seen the car, paid instantly via PayPal and subsequently disappeared off the face of the planet for 10 days. The car had no tax, 3 weeks MOT and a hefty crack across the windscreen. I'd recently done pads all round and, had I been a little more confident about curing the T-series OMGHGEXXONVALDEEZGF oil leak, I'd have given serious thought to hanging on to it. As it was, I replaced it with a ridiculous Mk1 827. Anyway.
When the buyer eventually made contact, he said he was coming up to Manchester the next day to collect it "with a mate". They were coming from Oxfordshire and he was going to drive it back. I explained it had no tax, he explained it was fine as he had A Plan.
    The Plan
    1) He would bring the tax disc from his Puggo 205 to put in the window of the Rover
    2) He would drive half a mile away, cut the fan belt and call the AA who would recover him home.
    3) Er...
    4) That's it.
He arrived (3 hours late) with his "mate". By "mate", what he actually meant was "some poor and clearly unwell man who'd obviously been bullied to drive 180 miles each way on a Friday night by the enormous geezer who'd actually bought my car". This man said nothing for the whole time he was in my house. I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if after they left, I'd have found "PLEESE HELP ME" carved into my kitchen door.
The Plan was initiated (except he couldn't be arsed to drive away, so he just cut the belt on the road outside my house - THANKS THEN). Belt cut, it took the best part of 30 mins to flatten the battery with the fans, lights, wipers on. AA called by Geezer, who knocks on my door asking to dispose of the belt "cos it'll look sus if they see the edges aren't frayed, so I'll just say it must have come off while driving".
    AA appears.
AA man spends approx 30 seconds to diagnose - Geezer's eyes light up.
Geezer's panic as AA hitches up the Rover to his Transit explaining "we've got a parts depot in Old Trafford, we'll get you a new belt on you'll be on your way in no time".
    Beautiful.
(As a post-script, I got a phone call about 3 days later from The Geezer - "alright mate, just lettin' you know if you get anythin' through the post - I'm in hospital at the moment cos I crashed the Rover last night. Those brakes you did were shit")
I never heard anything from anyone ever again.

Once the oil has come from that stainless mesh, it gets to sit in 25L drums to settle, and to let all the air that has been entrained to bubble out.  I find a week is more than plenty, and any longer doesn't seem to make any difference.

Next comes the multi-stage filter system.  Each 25L gets lifted up onto a high-level shelf, and then by using a dip-tube through a lid and a little bit of air pressure in the top of the barrel, 15 L is pushed over into the "header" tank:

This requires very little pressure.  The gauge I have is only 0-1 bar, but even just bringing it off it's stop is enough:

Quite hard to get a regulator to work at that pressure.
Once I have 15L in the header tank (the one that is ratchet strapped down), that then gets a 3psi over-pressure with a similar dip-tube that stops about 30mm up from the bottom, and the 15 litres is blown through three water filter housings:

It's not running in the photo (hence the reduced oil levels) but going left-to-right, that's a 50um, then a 5um and finally a 1um filter.  The oil pushes through these, and then ends up in the "footer tank", which is a 20L black container:

These are used as I don't need to see how much sediment there is in the bottom, as there isn't any.  Also, with 15L in a 20L drum, it makes pouring them into the car about 534 times easier.  Using a different colour for clean oil means I can't get the wrong container.
The stages of filtration down to 1um mean that the filter in the car never blocks.  Most paper filters in a car are around 10um, so I'm an order of magnitude better with this setup.  I prefer doing it this way, as the filters for the standard 10" filter bodies above are about £14 for 10 filters, rather than a tenner each for the car, which is about 1/3 the size.
Things I have learned about this setup:
the 50um filter takes the absolute brunt of the solids, and has to be changed about 10 times more regularly than the smaller ones. If the weather gets colder between doing the 125um filter and the 50um filter, I get grease build-up on the filter face as it coalesces out more fats.  Whilst a complete ball-ache, as it blocks the filter solid, it can be scraped off and the filter re-used. Blowing the filters backwards with compressed air is remarkably effective for cleaning. Oil gets absolutely everywhere.  You just have to accept that and do your best to keep everything clean. I use compressed air over the tanks rather than pumps as it means you can run a compressor for 2 mins and then when filtering the entire system is silent.  It also means that there's nothing to go wrong/overheat/explode, as once the header tank is empty, the compressed air just bubbles through the filters (hence the oil levels being low in the photo above) and once the compressed air reservoir is empty, nothing more happens.  No switches, no sensors, nothing.
Thus far, I think I've "processed" about 1000 litres of oil.  Other than the oil, the costs have been:
initial setup of the filter housings and 3x10 packs of filters:  approx £100 Various fittings that I didn't already have:  £20 15 black barrels and about 30 25L barrels: £25 and a couple of units of electricity for the compressor. Pretty much everything else I already had, but even if you started from nothing, it wouldn't be prohibitively expensive.
Next (but not tonight) the issues with burning Veg of any sort in a diesel engine.

Fucking hell! We’re getting ready to leave tomorrow morning and poor Wiblet junior has managed to knock a Star Wars statue off a shelf in his room, hitting his foot, taking the nail and tip of toe off. Pissing blood everywhere. Had to pull rest of nail off and clean him up and off to A&E. I looked like a fucking murderer there was so much blood on my hands, carpets, walls. Poor kid, not a tear though, brave lad.

The replacement air filter arrived today, so that’s gone in. The new one doesn’t look as good quality as the old one but will do for now.

4 plastic wing nuts and you’re in and done, nice and simple.

I’ve put the seats back in after using it as a van to move some stuff out my mate’s toolshed. This was mainly because my mrs kept mentioning that they were in the conservatory. I’ve test fitted the pram and some bits in the boot space behind the third row - this works way better as a 7 seater than the Land Rover, it should be perfect for when we have family visiting.

Yes, ex DaveQ, Ex Robson3022 and latterly ex Paulplom.
I almost spat my tea when I was told how much it was going for and booked the Megabus that very day.
Thankfully, Mrs_Pin's feet can reach the pedals on this one.
Averaged 41mpg on the run home from Newcastle to Bonnybridge and used exactly 1/4 tank. Drives very smoothly (its way quieter than the 75, by a country mile) no knocks and the brakes are good. There is a slight vibration under load at certain revs but it doesn't really affect anything, it still pulls well enough and the turbo makes the correct turbo noises. We think it's been mapped which could be the cause as the 75 does this sometimes too ( it's been remapped as well).
Overall very happy with it and a very capable motor car, the Mrs is happy too.
John, did you take a picture of that carving we found in Bamburgh that looks like me with glasses on?

It was, as suspected, the thermostat.  In off-the-car testing it wouldn't open, so they put a new one on.
I've been out in it this evening, just into town and back.  It's so easy to see why I've missed it.  Driving is effortless in exactly the way the Suzuki isn't.  The suspension is a bit slow to pump up; we think the pump might be on its way out.  For the moment it doesn't matter, I can live with it.
@Mally: don't worry, two Motability cars was never the intention.  If I do go for one, it'll be instead of MrsR's, not as well as.
Unless I get a sudden good offer, I'll run Handsome for the winter and weigh up my options in the spring.
