  1. Reminds me of my first lesson back in 1973 in a Hillman Hunter ( or was it an Avenger), drove both anyway. "Can you tell me the speed limit on this bit of road?", the instructor asked me. "30". "So why are we doing 40?". Mind you, I had driven my dad's Mk III Corrina on private property before being 17, not to mention a Park Royal bodied Leyland PD2 around an old airfield at 15!!!!
  2. Even without the interesting distortion effects, I bet driving that in a decent cross wind will need you to use the portaloo a few times!!
  3. Ha,ha, thank you, errrrrrrr. Anyway, sis lives down there, no doubt she'll be delighted* to fetch it up north for me then I can wrap it in Xmas paper and drop it outside your place, you know that you said you fancied a second car !!!!
  4. It was excellent to meet you Xtriple, the fact you live 10 minutes walk from my place in Torquay, like dogs, cars, and gives me an excuse to talk b*ll*cks just adds to the fun. The paperwork these days at major companies is dire. Up north, remember my conversation about how long it took build the houses across the road (?), those tyres would be changed in about 15 minutes. It was though a pleasant afternoon, will see you next time I'm back.
  5. That Karrier looks superb, who was it new to?
  6. Those sand bags are to stop damage BUT, somewhere in BR's archives will be a loading and rigging (where to strap it to) diagram showing how an Invacar should be tied down to the flat wagon to stop it moving. Things like that happened for a reason, the Beighton train accident in 1942 being a point.
  7. With a couple of inches spare on each side of the mirror. In the proper colours as well. The National Bus Company has a lot to answer for in terms of destroying local identities, liveries and choices in the name of the government..........
  8. That looks like an ex welfare bus somebody has chopped the back off. Should nicely break in half if you carry anything heavier than an Invacar.....
  9. Ah, Nottingham, did a bit of my PSV driver training there back in the late 70's on an ex Portsmouth PD2. Always liked their different attitude to bus design, single entry door so no sneaking on and avoiding paying, destinations designed so passengers could see them and a decent colour scheme.

  16. Absolutely, which is why a fair few people last night around here were again reminded that building a housing estate on a flood plain at the bottom of the valley, near a river, was errrr, fooooking stupid.
  17. Rain, rain and more rain. Currently have several local roads closed due to flooding, people stuck in Meadowhell (memories of 2007 and Air Sea Rescue helicopters being deployed) and several friends close to having to evacuate their houses just down the road. This morning, Charlie (in his blue coat) and I went for a walk, that's not a river we were walking past, that's usually a very dry footpath. That was almost 10 hours ago, my coat still isn't dry (neither is his) and it hasn't stopped raining, and isn't due to for at least another 7 hours!!!!!
  18. Phosphine, not to be confused with phosgene like one of our safety managers did when he was talking to our turners. The latter is a toxic gas that was used in WW I, imagine the fun we had trying to calm down our employees and explaining that the safety manager was a .........
  19. ^^^^^ Exactly this. Had an Eber in the camper, it could occasionally blow the 20A fuse. Arh, Wayfarer, that brings back memories. Isn't 0000 what you enter to tell you how much you're taken.
  20. Ah, pattern making and foundries turning them into something useful. I've spent many an hour ( longer than I should have been there) watching skilled men do this. It really is a fascinating operation. I'm sure you know that SG iron produces phosphine gas when you machine it in a damp atmosphere. Another thing I've been involved in.
