Flat4 reacted to scaryoldcortina in Main dealer repair cost, have a guess
Gained a customer recently, she booked a 21 plate Aygo in for a clutch (!?!) because my quote was less than half the main dealers price - they'd just done the first mot, charged her £400 for front pads and a handbrake adjustment and told her it needs a clutch.
Found myself looking at a 7000 mile car with a very high pedal. Drove it and found the bite right at the top so... Looks like I found the only 2021 car where some shit can wind the manual cable adjustment up to con someone into getting a clutch job.
Set the adjustment to spec, checked pedal, charged her £40 and sent the clutch back.

I managed to make a bit more time for tinkering this eve. Not many photos I’m afraid as I just wanted to crack on.
First up was that breather hose.
The part listings online had the specs for it as an 18mm id. I did not bother removing one and measuring the hose tail. I lived to regret this.
It turns out the ends of the hose are a larger ID than the main body of it, so the 19mm oil hose I ordered didn’t fit.
I don’t want to wait for Autodoc to deliver a proper hose, and all the spares on eBay etc. are also located in Europe.
I had a scout around the garage and I discovered that my manual shite water pump that I keep handy in case of small floods has the perfect sized oil rated hose attached to it.
    Bodge time:

It’s better than it was at least. The original pipe had cracked around about 75% of its circumference, and fell off in my hand. I’ve just cut it back to make it fit into a sleeve I cut from my hand pump. Job jobbed.
Then after some fucking around, swearing and pulled back muscles, I managed to get the spare pump in place.

Im really bloody hoping that woodruff key is located properly.

It’s all gone into place so I’m hoping that the key is still there and hasn’t been mangled. Once it’s all back together I’ll leave the timing cover off temporarily and bar it over first.
Im hoping to finish up tomorrow, all being well.

I mentioned at the beginning of March that the renewal for the Rover 45 had gone up from £287 to £406 . After consulting the meerkats I got it down to £240, which means that the three cars I've renewed the insurance on this year have cost around £50 less than they did last year. 🙂

Sad day, my 480ES has been collected, but the number of £325 tax cars we have is excessive so some have to go.
It is staying on the forum, but I will let the new owner reveal himself.
    Update:
@robinmasters has now revealed he was the buyer of the 480.

Well, I tried, really I did. For only the second time in my motoring history, I am going to scrap a running, MOTed car. I have had the Xantia back for about a month and have been using it as a daily in the hope I would get to like it. The electrical drain meaning the battery has to be disconnected when left has been a pain, but manageable. The problem is the electrical problems, which come and go at random. The heater blower speed varies constantly between slow an silent and full on hurricane, entirely at random and several times a minute. The radio never worked, and now will not even accept a code. The front windows never worked, now the rears have done the same. One of the interior lights decided to come on. It would occasionally go off, but only for 30 seconds or so. I removed the bulb! The footwell lights are now on permanently, but may well be off next time I go to it.
I have done the fuse check/clean and the earths that I could find, but nothing made any difference and patience was running thin. The only saving grace was after reconnecting the battery, it would always start and drive well, despite the rear spheres making a bouncy ride. I did not want to do the spheres until I could solve the electrical problems.
Last night on my way home, dual carriageway, 11pm and biblical rain and spray, the drivers windscreen wiper decided, with no warning, to shear off so the wind blew it round until it rested on the door mirror. So I am calling time on it. Tomorrow I will drive it to the station whilst I collect its replacement, at the weekend I will take the trailer and fetch it home. Once here I will remove the battery and any other useful parts and rather than take it off the trailer, next week it will go to the bridge. Anyone want any easily removed bits for a Xantia 2 litre petrol Executive, speak up!
