This is a 1980 1800 HL with 122,000 km

Fuck's sake, just let this thing die. It's let water in, the ECU is fried and no-one wants to take it on. 

I'm sure it must be heartbreaking for the owner but if they can't get it finished and there's no interest, the kindest thing is to let it go for scrap and realise some money from it. Better and rarer cars than this have been binned; he's tried like hell and it hasn't worked.

Mini has left the fleet. 
Golf V6 exhumed from its five year slumber and about to be resurrected. 
I've kept the big stereo from the Mini, and I've been collecting bits for the Golf for the last few years, so now it's the time to bring it back to life.

I guess it depends on the age, complexity and value of the vehicle along with the mindset of the owner. In theory, if you ran a late 80s/early 90s Toyota, you could likely get away with barely maintaining the thing and it would still reward you with faithful, reliable service. 
Anything built within the last decade with one or more turbos and a long-life service schedule adhered to is likely to shit itself regardless of future kid-glove attention from a newly caring owner. 
Mrs DL's old 2008 Audi A3 CR tdi was six years old when purchased, with one owner and full history. 72k on the clock if I remember correctly. We'd looked after it well and the full history was maintained by us. It behaved impeccably until around nine years old and 115ish k. Anything that could go wrong went wrong. Dpf issues. Turbo issues. Water ingress issues. Fumes into the cabin issues. Central locking issues. It used oil too. I drew a line under the hateful piece of shit when my OH informed me of the fumes in the cabin becoming worse. She was pregnant with our lad at the time. 
We couldn't have done any more to have looked after that car. 
Moderns terrify me.

I've wanted to take the SVX to the Forest of Bowland/Trough of Bowland/Ribble Valley for years. @Conrad D. Conelrad joined me for the ride (and took this boss photo).

...and a friend's 40th birthday in Preston. I have a lot of contacts round there where I can stay for cheap; I worked from the University on Sunday and Monday. 
Over the ToB, the SVX coped pretty well; it was too large for some of the minor roads (road) and it melted an H3 in spectacular fashion, but otherwise there were no problems to report.
It desperately needs a new exhaust, an alignment, the cruise and A/C fixing and new rocker cover gaskets to stop the occasional hot oil waft through the vents.
