Someone's got a barg and I hope you're mate gets to spend the cash as he wants it due to his current situation.

Looking at that so called repair, I'd say there's no way those injectors have been taken out and re-seated and if so, why the hell didn't the mechanic clean the carbon from that area first?

Anyway, that will NOT affect the starting, mine had proper black death on it for years after getting the seats done for a 3rd time and in the end I just couldn't be arsed but despite that, it never affected the starting.

It will most likely be the small "o" ring seals that are all around the clear diesel pipes in the engine bay(about £10 for 10 from Merc themselves) None are really hard to replace and a quick test is to get it started then turn it so the nose is pointing downhill overnight. Go out in the morning and there'll be a good chance it well start instantly and run fine. Mine certainly did!!!

Another common failure are those electrical connectors that go to the injectors, if anyone of those is loose or comes off, it cuts the engine or straight away and no offence to the mechanic that did the work, but if he's happy to hand a car back with the injectors in that state, then I doubt if he's going to give a shit if he's cracked an injector connection or chaffed the loom.

If these ever go down on power/bad economy, disconnect the exhaust after the turbo (really easy to do, one big clamp and then the cat can be moved back) and take it for a spin, it feels like a totally different car. Good chance that both cats have failed, the front fails and the bits get shoved into the rear cat blocking everything up. Best thing I did too mine was gut them both. Never caused any MOT issues as you can't see them when they're done.

This one sounds a good one though because you can get top gear on it, I couldn't until I binned the cats on mine!!!!

Just a few tips for the new owner.

Despite what the internet tells you these are damn fine motors and that looks in brilliant condition.

Generally these are great cars and this has just had the all important injector seats done (not that cheap a job).
Had one for years and really if I'd looked after it from the beginning as well as I did at the end it would have been a cracking motor. There's so many horror stories on the internet about them which are complete bullshit. They're easy to work on, don't rot badly, so comfy to drive and the main mechanics go on for ever.
Perfect colour combination on that one too.
    That will (hopefully) sell easy.
I hope so for your mate and good on you for helping him out at such an awful bloody time.

Long before the days of the black box and massive emission restrictions, they were a really potent car in the right hands.

Shit I'd forgotten all about those!!!!

Tried to help someone over in the blue once with one he couldn't get started but he was one of these idiots who believed what the pub gossips told him and continually ignored what I told him was wrong, having had an identical issue on a Corsa with it being the same car etc. I even sent him eBay links for the parts that would have cost him £60 and a few hours work (bear in mind he'd just had the engine replaced so wasn't averse to working on cars) but no, he knew better and his mechanic* told him it needed xy and z. Still wasn't running 4 months after the original thread and numerous hundreds in money thrown at it. But then, there's no helping some people.
It was the immobiliser box on the side of the engine is anyone cares, which I doubt they would!!!

overall £350 to pass including the screen excess, new front discs and pads fitted and a new rear tyre.

They charged me £211 for the front discs pads and tyre all fitted plus the MOT which I thought was good, probably £150 in parts and tyre alone.

I messed up with the front discs and pads personally so my bad. Without that cock up it could have been all done for an evenings work and £200.

Still it now has all new brakes all round that should last a good few years, good tyres, fresh screen and MOT.

I may* even have a buyer if needs be by the end of the month although that depends more on me than anything else.

It will be for sale at some point but it will be a month or two at least.
Plus I'm afraid it will now be way more than the £200 as it's cost me a few Bob to put it through.
But man maths means I'll end up advertising it at £700 and take £199 for it but justify it by retaining the stereo and the fact it would have cost me more in taxis or something.

Hi all, really overwhelmed at the rapid responses but then it's a cheap working car. Drove it into work tonight and yes the clutch does take a little bit of getting used to but it hasn't slipped out juddered once.

I can see two interested parties above (bangernomics and lord sterling) and I see bangernomics got in first (I did check the pm time L/S just incase) but I'll leave it up to you boys to decide what's fair, someones need/desire maybe more than others but I could do with confirmation ASAP.
I can keep it at the unit but not forever, I maybe able to leave it in the work carpark but my contract is up at the end of the month and it's still not confirmed as being renewed. Ideally, I need it moved on sooner rather than later as :
    A) it's not in my name
Kev who effectively owns it is not to be messed with and a decent guy to boot
    C) if I leave it too long I'll end up keeping it as it's just what I seem to do!!!

Nearest train station to my unit is Hungerford or to work Swindon. If a lift back to Swindon or train on can be provided I'd go as far as Brum as it's an easy route home.

    Cheers all.

Quick update, she will be mot'ed by the weekend. Did the work but as suspected ECP let me down on the front brakes and supplied front discs that were too small, very annoying. I was 7-7 days that week and had already been booked in so had to go with it and replace the discs with the smaller ones supplied ( once the others came off they were in a right old state). A tentative test drive revealed the brakes worked A1 (they were a max of 10mm different) so I thought sod it lets see what the MOT man says.
    He said NO!!
However, tyre and screen aside no other issues were found so I've left it at the garage ready for its full retest.

I can highly recommend this garage (MOT Autocentre,Swindon) as they've been very thorough on the car and also very fair, only £25 for an MOT with a free retest and they've been great as regards dropping off/collecting out of hours etc.
