Huw, I was reading your thread on changing piston rings. My experience is as follows:
Try using a 10-40 oil with a half litre of ATF-U in with it. I tried this on my Honda 125 twin bike and it stopped all the oil burning. The bike stood outside negected for 3 years before I got it running again with the old oil. The engine ran with lots of white smoke and its air cooled. With new oil and some ATF-U in with it, it does not smoke and no longer uses oil. I think the oil conntrol rings were stuck in the grooves and new oil with the ATF-U cured that. ATF-U is about 30 SAE. Once you start pulling engines apart, the time and costs start to mount up quickly. Give it a try.
Best wishes. Thomas.

Thanks Thomas - I'll give it a go! Do you leave the ATF-U in permanently, or just for a few tens/hundreds/thousands miles? The issue is almost certainly the rings, they are renowned for it, and it was more of a ponder than serious intent to rip the engine to bits. I need to keep reminding myself that perfect is the enemy of good, its a fundamentally good car, but is nearly 20 years old so has outlived its design life by 50% already.
