I sold my '05 focus mk2 in Feb to another manager at work, its now shit its engine 4000 miles later and he's not happy, I suspect he's been ragging it to death and has never checked the oil in the time he's had it, it was perfect when I sold it and I had spent loads on preventative maintenance, I even replaced the wishbones the day before he collected it at £200 because there was a small knock and I wanted it to be right for him, on a £1000 car!

I broke my rule of not selling a vehicle to anyone I know or work with, I won't be doing that again, I've told him to fuck off and its his problem, makes work a bit difficult mind as he does all my HR stuff.

I emailed his company who investigated and found the driver responsible and he admitted liability. I insisted on keeping insurance out of it so they offered £150 as compensation which is better than nothing. I am going to use the money to buy a big hammer to twat the dent back into shape and fit another bumper.

Mine was entirely due to sticky vanes on the turbo. Fixed by undoing the exhaust on the turbo side and filling it with Mr muscle. Leave overnight and then fine. Had to do that a couple of times. I doubt it's anything as serious as a new turbo.

Thanks KruJoe, that was a really interesting read. It seems that essentially, this engine is great except that it clogs up all over the inlet side. Since I anticipate this one hasn't been particularly well looked after, there are any number of things it could be, and any or all of them would probably make it a bit better...

1.9 tdi by any chance? I'd clean/blank egr, mr muscle vnt vanes on turbo and check all vacuum hoses are ok, especially any that are boost or N75 valve related.
If you're feeling more adventurous pull the intercooler and inlet manifold and clean them both as theyre most likely full of oil/gunk.

OK, so I've tested the MAF with multimeter - it showed 2.2v at idle (no load) rising to about 3.7v at 5k RPM (again no load).

It is mucky, with oil on it. The airbox is filthy too. But to be honest, if BIL can get a refund for the car, I'm not going to do any more digging unless it becomes necessary. It seems that the MAF is at least doing something when the airflow varies, though I have no idea whether those voltages are anything like valid...?

One thing I can't work out though, perhaps someone can enlighten me...  as far as I can work out, the airflow comes in at the OS wing, and goes straight into the airbox, then through the MAF sensor; then down and under the block, through the intercooler, back under the block and up the other side, into the turbo and then the inlet manifold.

So how TF does oil get into the inlet air and onto the MAF sensor? Or into the intercooler, come to that? (there is oil on the intercooler hoses, and J4mes, I have no doubt your statement below is correct...)

Air goes through the cooler AFTER the turbo has compressed it. Oil gets into the air either from the turbo itself or, more likely, from the engine breather etc.

Yes, I should have mentioned I've done that. No change in symptoms - which is sort of one reason I was hoping it was MAF sensor related - engine behaves the same whether it's plugged in or not, therefore it might be dead...

When you put it like that...

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't make any untoward noises, doesn't smoke at all, doesn't suddenly lose power, the delivery of what power there is is smooth. It's just gutless when you put your foot down. It will reach high revs when not under load, and in the first 20% of throttle travel it feels quite eager, up to a point.

I'll get the multimeter out later on and possibly clean the MAF sensor if I can find some switch cleaner.

Yes, 1.9 tdi. I'll see what he wants to do with it/how adventurous he's feeling. Apparently, since it turned out to be a lemon, the guy that sold it to him has offered to give him a partial refund if he re-lists it on ebay, i.e. make up the difference to what he paid for it. Which I thought sounded extremely decent, and if he turns out to keep his word, a serious result for BIL.

Apparently the Espace is behaving itself apart from occasionally refusing to open the boot

for the 2002 Daewoo Matiz with plenty of dents but genuine low mileage, sold on ebay and I was convinced that it was a timewaster. On the final day chap called me from intl phone and asked "ok to pick up tomorrow?" he was in Berlin. driving back . anyway pair of really nice chaps (both Turkish Kurds) rocked up 30 mins late by which time I was convinced it was a wind up. Paid cash. used my computer to sort rfl and insurance. His mate was planning to drive it to Turkey in 24h. he never takes more than 24h to get from Blasingsmoke (uk base) to Turkey. chain schmoks and drinks redbull. stops for fuel and toilet breaks. cannot be good for you.

I tried to sell my Mk2 Cav when it was 4 years old. it had over 120k on the clock. all by me as my company car that I bought from the company. Anyway I decided to sell it dirt cheap and I mean like the cheapest late mk2 Cav on exchange and mart by some margin. There wasnt much wrong with it, well maintained, fsh, I just wanted rid.

Bloke rocks up, I knew that he wanted to take it to his mechanic so asked him to leave his passport with me. he did. 3 hours later and no sign of the fucker. he eventually returns and moans about the mechanical fuel pump leaking oil and the rear tyres (which were road legal) wanted another £200 off the asking. told him to fuck off. Lied that another interested party wanted it at asking price.

Her left me a deposit cheque and agreed to pick it up 1 week later. 1 week later no sign of the cnut, call him up asked wtf he is? usual tirade of disaster stories, wife is pregnant etc etc can he have his deposit back? errr can you fuck. Then the bastard cancelled the cheque. I sent him smol claims court paperwork and he got mega abusive. so I persevered, probably wouldnt have had he not been such a cunt. Anyway I won, he didnt pay. hope he ended up with some ccj twattery and a police truncheon up his jacksie.

I did enjoy subscribing him to just about every single coupon I could lay my hands on over the next 6 months or so, porn, kippers, double glazing etc

More recently I tried selling a couple of cars around the Whycombeshite area, locals typically turn up en mass with extended family and try to bully you to sell for a fraction of the asking. I recognised one chap from a shop in Wycombe. Made it my business for the next month when I had spare time or was very bored to haggle him on absolutely every single fucking thing in his shop. until his son showed up and threatened me with serious violence.

kind of havent bothered to sell cars since, the world is full of bigger knobends than me

This afternoon I cycled the 5.5 miles over to my mates house...at a rather slow average speed according to Strava, because I kept stopping. This was my haul from that one trip:

Unbelievable TBH. The bolt at the top of the pic was actually in that position when I picked it up, sat poking up into the air ready to embed itself in the nearest passing tyre. It's a wonder that anyone manages to drive anywhere round here without getting a puncture every other trip. I only picked up one screw on the way home admittedly, but it was getting dark and I was under strict instructions not to be late for dinner.

And then...literally as I was turning the corner into my mate's road...I twatted into a pothole and got a snakebite puncture. Fuck's sake!   Fortunately I had a spare inner tube in my bag and matey hadn't lost the pump I lent him a couple of months ago.

Anyway, I take it from the fact that the thread's had about 50 views since my last post and no replies along the lines of "what are you playing at man" that my brother's not in any imminent danger of a high speed blowout next time he drives somewhere!

The spaztecs NSF tyre is proper fucked, like the rabbit. After being quoted £40 a tyre by Kwik Fit and £50(!) by my local spanner twiddling emporium - 145/70/13 being a "funny size" apparently. I chanced my arm and went for a BIN on a TIGAR part worn off the bay for a score posted. I did wonder if it would A. turn up in the first place and 2. still be here when I got back from work as I'd told them to leave it on the drive. But as it turned out my fears were unfounded and it arrived today.

I'm pleased enough as it was fully as described and has MANY TREDZ left on it. When you compare it to the one on there now I should be able to pull some serious G once I've wanged it on down the yard tomorrow.
