  1. My girlfriend's car when we met was an X reg Peugeot 206 with a 2.0 diesel engine. Pretty quick, but I remember being appalled at how cheap the interior felt compared to the 51 reg Mondeo I had at the time. In fact the 1991 Sierra I had before the Mondeo had a far nicer interior than her 2000 Peugeot!

  4. Yes, square headlights on L from late 1978 and the passenger door mirror was an option.
  5. I believe Moskvich had the distinction of being the last car on the UK market for under £1000, a price point they managed until 1975, at the same time that a base Escort was £1300 and a Mini 850 over £1200. Glass's Guide

  8. I don't think there was much overlap between Princess and Ambassador, doubtless there would have been some unsold Princesses still being sold in the first few months of the Ambassador, but certainly nothing like the 7 year overlap of Cambridge and Landcrab!
  9. Quite possibly. 88 is a popular number among neo-Nazis, the eighth letter of the alphabet being H and HH standing for "Heil Hitler".

  15. No Granada 1.8 GL in 1987, but any Granada would be quite a leap from a Sierra L. Sierra trim levels were LX, GL, GLS, then a fair jump in price to a Ghia which was actually about the same money as a Granada GL. Sep 1987 brochure

    AROnline

Good news! A new home for AROnline Great British Car Journey are taking it on.
  19. I think it's true that the Ambassador was seen partly as a Maxi replacement. Also have a look at AROnline's article on LM14/15, a large hatchback based on the Maestro/Montego platform that could have been a more direct replacement for the Ambassador but not due for launch until 1986, implying Ambassador production until then. Presumably once LM14/15 was dropped, it was decided to focus on the Montego and not have internal competition with the Ambassador.
  20. Maxi production had finished before the Ambassador launched, but I agree that the extent of the changes made to the Princess seems excessive. A more extensive facelift of the Allegro, getting the headlights moved to the corners to get rid of the podgy "face" would seem a better use of cash. Discontinuing the six cylinder engine allowed for a lower bonnet line, although looking at a Princess a high bonnet doesn't really seem an issue! At around the same time as the Ambassador launch, the Rover SD1 range was being extended downwards with a four cylinder 2000 model for the first time. Perhaps the Ambassador had to be kept a bit downmarket to avoid overlap.
