  1. Sadly wasn't the case for me - our Admiral multicar renewal was up 57% compared to last year, despite no changes (i.e. no claims, convictions etc and same vehicles). In previous years, I've always been able to get them to match or beat any lower quotes with a phone call, but no dice this year, although they came down quite a bit to be fair. What was perhaps more interesting is how for mine and my partners cars the premium increases were vastly different - I ended up renewing my aged Pug 306 for pretty much the same cost as last year, whereas my partners modern-ish BMW ended up being about 40% higher than last year. Other thing I noticed while getting quotes on the comparison sites was how many policies, particularly at the cheaper end of the spectrum, had cut back numerous elements of the policy that you would have expected to be standard on a fully comp policy - things like no windscreen cover (or very low claim limits way below the cost of a replacement screen in most vaguely modern cars) and European cover that is TP only or excludes named drivers. Obviously for some people those things wouldn't be an issue, but I imagine there's some out there who perhaps weren't diligent enough when comparing policies who are potentially going to get a nasty shock if they need to claim... When I took out the policy for my car, the dates had auto-populated incorrectly from the data supplied by the comparison site - only a few months out, but obviously I corrected it before taking out the policy. What I found surprising is that despite passing my driving test over 25 years ago (back in the 90's), correcting the dates and in effect showing that I'd had my licence a few more months dropped the premium by nearly 5% - that seemed bizarre to me as logically a few months here or there is negligible when you've had a licence that long.
  2. Zero on all counts again this year 🙂 Aging French jalopies aren't so bad apparently...
  3. 61 in a 50, so bang to rights (if perhaps a little unsporting - camera van was maybe 2-300m past where the 70 limit dropped to a 50 on a dual carriageway). On the back of the form, it lists up to 64 as being eligible for SAC. There is that, but it would probably make a refreshing change from the missus doing the same - and I figure I might learn something from it (or maybe just be left horrified by the utter ignorance elsewhere in the room)
  4. As others have said, that looks like a good buy and price doesn't sound unreasonable either given the huge jump they've made in recent years. I've had various 205 GTi's over the years and still have three (two 1.9's and an Mi16), all bought when they were worth buttons compared to now. In terms of the leaks: That hole above the boot lock normally has a plastic peg from the slatted tailgate trim going through it with a securing star clip - they get broken when people try to remove the slatted panel not realising that the clip there, and the hole that's left will let in a little water, which pools inside the tailgate before running out the vent holes in either corner. Check the other various holes on the tailgate and the glass bonding, as all can leak to varying degrees. That said, unless it's leaking very badly and the car has been parked on a fairly steep downhill slope, I suspect that's not why the footwells are wet. Rear footwells are usually the rear quarter window seals leaking as they shrink with age - new ones are available - or sometimes because the sill drains are blocked and it leaks in through the seatbelt mounting holes. Front footwell could be water travelling from the rear, but the amount that's there looks like it's leaking from the front - front screen seal, scuttle panel, A pillar seam, door seals or the plastic scuttle plastic trim not being fitted properly are all common causes. If there's that much water pooled on the carpets, then I'd strongly suggest taking it out as the felt underlay will be completely soaked and won't dry out, making the car mist up easily and eventually rusting out the floorpan.
  5. Depends on the insurer - Admiral for example (who this particular car is insured with) do ask about speed awareness courses.
  6. Thames Valley Police sent me a lovely Christmas present this year... a NIP for speeding I'd been half expecting it tbh and hopefully I'll be offered a course rather than points, but annoying as it's my first ticket in nearly 25 years and just in time to hike my insurance renewal early next year. And what's annoyed me most? It was completely my own fault and entirely avoidable. On a completely different subject, Royal Mail delivery times - along with the NIP I had a Christmas card delivered that was postmarked 12 days ago no more than 50 miles away. I get that it's a busy period with Christmas and staff shortages, but that's a pretty poor show regardless.
  7. Discovered that the tame MOT tester that's MOT'ed all my cars for many years has left, which gave me the fear when I dropped my Pug 306 off to be tested earlier. Need not have worried though - the old girl passed, a mere 24 years old and 263k on the clock 🙂
  8. 306 HDi averages around 55mpg, predominantly motorway and dual carriageway use on an 80 mile round trip to work. Most I've seen from it is 62mpg over an entire tank.
