Surprised this is dumped. Im not a fan but these are surely getting more sought after? I reckon I may know who owns it if anyone is interested. This has all the hallmarks (shoddy old VW with flat tyres and paintwork and no tax but strangely no `individual` dubber modifications) of someone I vaguely know and being a small town I could probably find him easily enough!

Yes but I had a Mercedes before so my A4 felt like a luxury car after that

There was a request from one person that I write about this project. Even if only him and myself are interested then at least it's like a diary entry for myself.

    So here is my project
Yes it's a 53 plate so practically brand new but the underpinnings are old. I'm assuming everyone knows that the front ends on these are 306 / ZX based, so it's in good company here.

ANYway, a friends dad has owned this for 6 years and it has been a good van. Zero maintenance and nothing much has gone wrong. Until last winter.... He just had his first big bill. £600 to get it through the MoT. Two weeks later the engine seized up due to lack of oil. caused by him not using the dipstick but only topping up when the oil light came on. It has had serious oil and power steering leaks for some time, causing a fall out with the neighbours. Anyway, it went to a local garage and was deemed uneconimical to repair to a brought it back here for him to decide what he wants to do with it.

Several months go by, he buys another van. Then I hear that Harold on the Hill (local car hoarder/con artist)wanted it and would pay £100 for it as he wanted the back axle and other parts. I agreed to buy it instead just to piss Harold off, with no other intention in mind. Maybe break it or just use it as a shed.

A few more months go by. I take a look at it. It's quite straight. No rust. I know the brakes are good because they were new at the last mot. have an engine that will fit. I may as well fix it.

The engine that was in it was semi dismantled by the garage. The camshaft was unbolted. I forget what their diagnosis is was but it looks like the cam may have seized up, don't know as I haven't bothered investigating.

First job to make things easier is to drop the subframe. My engine crane is broken so it's easier to just lift the van over the engine with my big jack

Also, it makes cleaning easier as the whole lot is coated in old oil.

This can came with a DW8 which is basically an XUD but with a couple of Cubic centimetres missing for some reason. They have also made it asthmatic and unwilling to rev so I have stuck an engine out of an early Citroen ZX in it. Non turbo. Many small differences but all easy to change.

Much better radiator set up on the vans than in the cars. Changing a radiator on a 306 is an upsetting, emotionally damaging job. Non of that nonsense on a Berlingo/ Partnerthere is this plastic pipe that comes from the back of the engine, over the gearbox to the radiator. Much better!

Next job, exhaust manifold. The Partner has an EGR valve and the ZX has this resonator thing stuck on it as this would not clear the aforementioned water pipe I just blanked it off
The original and the ZX exhaust mounting angles looked to be exactly to same so I decided to use the ZX manifold as the Partner one would have needed the EGR blanking off anyway.

Auctions used to be more of a game, these tales were from years ago, I wouldn't do that now.

Snipped bonnet cable on a healthy sounding but fucked Golf

Clocked a Rover 800 and somehow snapped off the fuel guage needle. Well if you are going to glue it back on then you may as well glue it on half!

Bunging the driver of the Mondeo auto that wouldn't disengage drive so that he would knock it into neutral when it stopped. Otherwise it would just judder to a halt.

A Polo that used to eat oil and smoke badly until it used up all its oil then it would run fine. Simple. Put through ring with no oil

Yes, came round a bend to find a large flood caused by a blocked drain. I was in quite deep before I could think about it so made the decision to carry on slowly, make a decent bow wave and get out of there but it just kept getting deeper!
Rebuild starts this week. I have an old ZX Volcane engine that will donate its rods. It had a failed head gasket but the owner kept in running it til the oil looked like melted Caramac bars.

    Great thread.

It reminds me of a lad I knew when I was a kid. I sold him a bodykit off something, I forget what. I told him it would fit his Escort and to be fair, it did. Well, it was attached anyway but it looked ridiculous.

Ooooh shit hot invacar talk time to jump in weeeee *splash*

its always interesting just how much specific dislike invacars generate, many ex invacar users do actually have fond memories of their machines, and where pretty happy with them (by 2003, there where about 200 people still running around in invacars, those people could of jumped ship to motability long ago, keep in mind the Invacar scheme ended to new applicants in 1978 or thereabouts, although we are still trying to figure out what happened in Northern Ireland)

while im sure there where plenty of people/users who did not like them, I do feel like a lot of hate was generated by the media so to speak (much like how when top gear shits on a old British car)

espically as if you listen to peoples complaints about them, Most of the time they are usually complaining about an earlier type of invacar, but everyone just sees the Model 70, no one ever realises, there where Many different types of invalid carriages/invalid tricycles

and that the Model 70 was a massive step up from earlier types, much more car like in many aspects

id also like to note, that I do actually plan to use my future invacar, much like DW uses TWC, and Zel plans to use TPA

I pretty much plan to use it for what it was built for, as someone who is disabled, using/wanting an invacar to help themselves get out the house and get around, is pretty much what they where built for no?

and I do find it a bit sad how many Model 70s where/are bought just to sit around, get dragged to shows so the owners can go "look what I have!" and then dragged home to sit once more

especially as most dont Appreciate what they have, and the social/history behind it all,

(edit: I do realise this is pretty much what i imagine egg will be doing with his Mk12 a lot of the time, but im pretty sure egg knows what he has so to speak, and it sounds like he would be doing it to raise awareness etc as he mentioned in his post above)

(and I also realise it would be much harder to daily a Mk12 then it would be to daily a Model 70 LOL)

ah well, im guess im an old grumpy flat capper on the whole subject on of invacars now  (but hey at least when I go round shows tapping on invacars, ill be pleased to hear its fibre glass LOL)

I swapped all the good bits from the old engine to the lower mileage spare one today.

This one is very quiet and doesn't seem to burn oil but i did pull the heads off last summer and give it a bit of a once over anyway.

I lightly reground the valves although they didn't really need it and checked the bores/replaced the stem seals and gaskets as required.

I also replaced all the O rings in the oil pump as these always go hard and leak.

    Ahh fuck it !!

I had aquired a sump gasket years ago and thought i may as well change it while the engine is hanging in mid air so unbolted it only to find i hadn't drained the old oil out of the engine (muppet).

It so nearly ended in tears as i scrabbled to find something to collect four litres of dirty oil in.

Pleasingly it is nice and clean inside the sump and the block has a nice golden sheen to it.

    Ahh fuck it again.

Far less pleasing is my sump gasket has either shrunk or (more likely) not suitable for an EA81.

Cork gaskets are so yesterday anyway and with zero chance of getting the correct one locally i resorted to Tiger seal instead.
If it leaks (i'm sure it wont) i can drop the sump easily enough when the engine is in situ.

Finally for today (everyone cheers) i decided to remove the Egr valve and its plumbing.
I only needed to pull its vac pipe off it to render it useless but i made a blanking plate out of ally to cover the valves orifice on the inlet manifold and also welded up the ends of the pipework to keep it tidy.

    So there you have it.

Right i am off down The Chequers as it's 80's night tonight.

Tomorrow i am going to fanny about with the exhaust maybe.
