my father bought a poo stable no, sable brown mark 1 sierra second hand, back i think in 1986. the car A570FAJ served my dad well for 6 years. it wasn't a base, but the heady heights of a GL, and a 2000 too.

we were amazed by such delights as the dangly wing mirrors, plastic hub caps, and a hatch back.

in fairness i don't think it was as good a car as the mark 1 cavalier it replaced, but it kept on going, and going, and going....

we kids called it Christine... cos it just would not die!

holidays, going to work, taking us kids horse riding, it did it all, without a FTP as i recall at any time and all with the bear minimum of servicing.

its water pump packed up, and my father drive it like that for a couple of months before getting it fixed. when the temperature gauge got a bit scary, he would just ease right off and let her coast for a mile or too so it could cool down.

in the end, it got to the stage when it would not pass another MOT easily, he chopped it in against a mark 2 sierra LX, which was an even greater car.

it had a well cracked windscreen, when  it rained water leaked though the hole in the bulk head under the battery onto the passenger side footwell, the door bottoms were missing, and the back bumper was hanging off.

that sierra at the start of the thread is proper grim and hanging in just about every way, but it is just how they were, mostly, 20 odd years ago. what a great survivor!

a chevrolet station wagon that is so big it doesn't fit in any of the photographs.
a 5 litre V8 is fitted, just what a guy needs when petrol is the better part of £6.50 a gallon........

well bought there, i had a couple of them mark 1 focus's as company hacks back when they were new and thought they are a superb car.
i thought them streets ahead of the equivalent astra and as as bigger leap forward over the mark 6 escrot as a modern jet fighter is when compared to the Wright brothers flyer.
and that one looks a good 'un, i dont remember the last time i saw one running,  never mind one with the back arches still made of metal!
one i had was a 2 litre ghia saloon, the only thing i didn't like much was the silly little fold down armrest thing on the captains chair, and i don't recall that one been any heavier on pez than the 1600 i had before it was.
goes to show, though that there are still really nice second hand cars to be found out there!

Thought I'd start a new thread as the other one was getting so convoluted.
Last week I purchased a nice looking avensis after the c4 went french. Made the fatal mistake of investigating the little bit of corrosion in the boot cubby hole and it's turned into a shitshow. This meant looking for a replacement motor. I don't know what the hell has happened with car prices lately but its so hard to find a running and ok ish car for sub 1000. Anyway I digress.
I went to look at a 2002 nissan xtrail and a 2005 Peugeot partner that were both knackered in different ways, one was £575 and the other was £750. I stumbled upon this though, a 2003 mk1.5 ford focus ghia. It is a 2.0 auto estate with around 43k on the clock and 3 former keepers. First was motability from 2003 to 2006,private owned from 2006 to 2021 and the old boy I bought it from picked it up in September for his daughter to learn to drive in but she declared it a grandad car so he put it up for sale. Advertised at £800 I thought was steep but it was local so I went to have a look.

It's rather well equipped  with optional digital climate control and also has electric rear windows and trip computer. Loads of history, service stamped to 2018 and that was 1600 miles ago. Had my mechanic look it over and found a recent cambelt and atf change in past few years too.
There's no rot or rust anywhere, sills and arches are solid as is the boot floor and floor pan. Only surface corrosion on bits like suspension and arms but to be expected for the age.  Gearbox is so smooth and the seats are fantastic. The only issue we can find is evidence of giffer parking on the rear bumper but nothing of concern. I didn't pay 800 for it either which I think isn't bad considering the price of shit these days!
    Take care folks.

It's tat friday for me. Picked up these disgusting Spot Ons locally from marketplace

Mainly as an experiment, to see whether there was any way of removing the horrid repaints and revealing beautiful mint models underneath which I could flog for ££££ on ebay. Sadly the Armstrong and Mini don't have much paint underneath, but I've been attacking the Fiat with some nail polish remover. It currently looks like this

Which is certainly heading in the right direction. I need to get some cotton buds for more focussed scrubbing so I don't end up stripping all the blue paint off too. It's boring but relatively rewarding so I'll probably carry on, and get some tyres for it. No idea what to do with the other two.
They also came with some slightly nicer ones. Apart from the headlamps, the Alpine is complete and in great shape, and it's one I have particularly admired in the past. The 1800 is also nice and tidy but has had some 'primer' patches over some paint chips. I'll try and get those off which should improve it massively.

I paid £50 for the lot, which seemed like a great deal at first but having checked prices online perhaps the market for these things has dropped off slightly recently as 'projects' are available for a lot less than I thought they went for. I reckon £25 each for the two nice ones is probably fair enough though so I don't feel too hard done by
