Xj40 with touring suspension and 15inch wheels is the best riding car I've ever been in. Better than my old CX and current s class with airmatic. The later X300s lost a bit of that quality and it's only gotten worse since

The XJ6 was renowned for it's suspension on it's release, in fact it was thought to be the best in the world at the time. Whether that continued through into more modern cats I don't know.
In terms of 'modern' cars ride is a difficult find, we've had 20 plus years of daft low profile tyres, shock absorbers that don't absorb and springs that world suit a Tiger tank.  An LS400 would be good, maybe some Infiniti or other high end Jap stuff, Benzes that run on air. My current Saab '93 has hard suspension to me at least and it was purportedly turned down a bit on later cars. The W124 I owned was good.

The 604 had fantastically good ride, being a passenger over long distances in one was a pleasure; driving one, at least a V6, wasn't too bad either.

Smoothest ride i ever remember was in a Renault 16, a combination of the seats and suspension i presume.
A Toyota Camry was comfy though

There's a very fine line between improving an old car, and turning it into some sort of grotesque caricature of itself (see countless tuning* projects). Not many manage to strike the right* balance*.

Having driven an E-Type and an MGB roadster i can confirm that i was happier in the B.  Both of these cars were clients vehicles and i think the overhanging "value/worth" of the E-Type possibly spoilt the experience for me somewhat.
What was overwhelmingly obvious from the both was how very of their time their performance was. I feel similar pain now in my 69 Mini MK2 850, this thing terrifies me joining dual carriageways as it's just so slow compared to everything else on the road these days. Not too bad once you've got it up to speed but then i'm very much aware that any accident at 50mph+ is dental records territory.

When Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona watch sold for 17 million dollars a few years ago it did make me think in 20 years who's going to remember who Paul Newman is?
in 20 years why would anyone pay 17 million dollars for the watch of the guy who made salad dressing?

A bad E-Type is all the things you don't want. A nice one is a total joy.
I've been looking after a Series 1, 4.2, fhc. Not only does it look perfect (to me), it drives beautifully. Effortless power, no rattles or clonks, light controls etc.
There's a lot of baggy, tarted up stuff out there that needs £30k of expenditure to get it up to the right level.

Yep. On Done Deal ( the Irish sales website ) lately there was a gorgeous 1925 Delage tourer for €30k and on the next page a pastiche bubble arch MK1 Escort for €40k.

Saw this earlier and thought it was stupid cheap by current standards but it fits with what's been said above. I know it's a 60s car but it's a 50s design.

I know it's got 5 days left but if it was ten years newer and a Ford, any Ford, it would have 20 bids and be in to five figures by now. It was MOTd until July despite not needing to be so looks to have been looked after. Tidy but not a show car, looks very usable.

Also my Triumph. I seem to have the most undesirable Triumph around, a 1300 FWD. I don't know about prices dropping, they never went up in the first place. Which suits me fine.

Being heavily into 40s/50s family cars the news of a potential price drop doesn't bother me. In fact quite the opposite, my only concern being I'll soon realise how much I overpaid for my A40 Somerset in 2014.
Younger people are being priced out of these cars at the moment and lower prices will help encourage them in.

I know a guy who's restoring one but it's a labour of love as it'll be worth 50% of what he has in it when he's finished
A lot of the 50s & 60s stuff will go down as the older generation die off , as said above it's cars you wanted in your 20s so it moves on
You even see it with model railways , I buy and sell on eBay , anything steam is bought by Derek / Clive / Gordon

Went for 5 145 80 R13’s in the end. Wheels off ready to go to powder coating.

Had my first proper nose round underneath.
    Brake hoses all shot
    1 outer CV gaiter split
1 inner CV to diff seal leaking
    gearbox transfer case gasket leaking
1 hole found NSF inner wing, easy fix with wing off.

    Very good really.

The only concerning bit was the expansion tank is nearly empty and I can see glycol around one of the downwards facing core plugs. No mayonnaise on the oil cap or in the expansion tank it may simply have evaporated. Rad not wet. I’ll fill it and run it up.
