  1. Is the MoT man able to see either of these... patina marks without removing any trim? If not, then Shirley it's a straight* pass, no? I mean, yes it's probably not long for this world, but with a new ticket you could smoke about in it until it goes bang, by which time you'll have magicked some money out of nowhere to buy a shiny new* Auris. Alternatively, consider a "low" interest loan and buy a Vectra/Land Rover/NSU Ro80 (other vehicles are available).
  2. Aye, "McKenna's All-Weather Transport". Swish flop swish flop swish crunch.
  3. Hmm, this is a shame what with all the professional level swearing you've put into this. I do think I agree with you, fix it with cheap bits and punt it on. Maybe refresh the MoT if that's short? What sort of job is it to change the parts - doable or requires £grease monkey?
  4. Day 1 working from home in our temporary accommodation. Big slipper: ACTIVATED. I bought this for Mrs Grogee as a joke a few years back as she always has cold feet. But actually it's AMAZING, I'm a total convert. It also has massage function which is doing my plantar fasciitis wonders. Adverts for stretchy beige trousers, beaded seat covers and Panama hats gratefully received.
  5. OK, it was active in that it was responsive to roll/steering inputs. I suppose what I was getting at was 'fully' active as in capable of zero or even negative roll. I don't remember many Discos leaning into a corner. To be fair to everyone on the thread, I suppose the term 'active' isn't strictly defined anywhere, AFAIK. I agree though, a cleverly designed system let down by usual piss-poor corrosion protection. LR has form there.
  6. Thank you for enlightening me. I imagine that was very interesting to drive. Was it adjustable at all? I would also have driven it with kid gloves in case something unobtainium broke and rendered the car undriveable. I don't remember reading anything about that car at the time, and I was pretty 'up' on the mags in the 90s. Did it get much coverage? I imagine a Ferrari-priced Toyota was quite a hard sell then, though I realise why it was expensive. Thank goodness they're not trying to do the same thing now... oh.
  7. Group A rally spec; all sold in white ready for sponsor stickers.
  8. +1 for PAS. Are these EPAS or hydraulic? We had a C-MAX Ghia 2.0 auto. "Top of the range" but still well stingy spec. No pleather, no seat heat, no climate, no sunroof. I always thought it was less practical than the estate, the boot isn't large and the stupid slidy rear seats are pointless. It was alright to drive though, if a bit 'American' with 4-speed torque converter auto. Think Mrs Grogee regularly failed to achieve 30mpg. Seem to remember it being a bugger to start when hot. I still see it bombing about locally, so it's still going.
  9. A couple of British Bulldogs in the pub car park where we're staying. The Jag hasn't moved for some time; it has 'pub landlord' written all over it. I'm hoping to not find out its for sale, otherwise I'll be tempted to sink thousands of pounds into it. The Rovver has a feather on the dash so presumably it's the Flying Edition.
  10. Aah, the Union. Is it still winner stays on for the pool table?
  11. My Mum's '83 Metro Auto had hand controls. And PAS (specialist fitted). And a big battery from a truck, because she only used it to bumble about the village.
  12. Oh, and an apology to Grumpy Tim. He actually offered me some of his garage space to work in, which I thought was nice, although with the caveat that it would only be when it wasn't 'too full'. Unfortunately it's not practical with my tools all over the place.
  13. Maestro is now tucked away in its council lock-up. Yesterday's driving did reveal some new and exciting problems. The exhaust is blowing: I knew that it wasn't sealed around downpipe to middle, but it's also got that "1 in 4" flatulent blow of a not-sealed exhaust manifold. I'll have to have a proper look in the spring, but I may try the double gasket trick which worked on my Puma. At least I know I can get the bolts out now and I put ceramic anti-seize on the nuts. Also that zizzing noise is quite noticeable. It's possibly alternator bearings which isn't serious, or oil pump which is. That's in addition to the handbrake I've mullered, but luckily cables are still cheap and plentiful. Unlike body panels, which are NLA.
  14. I'm with you on that, UK roads are not compatible with Civic Type-R iron suspension. I get that it's complex and expensive but you'd expect a Koenigsegg/Bentley/McLaren to come out with a £750,000 glitzwagen to give it a try? It just seems like a niche that hasn't been tapped and the motoring hacks would lap it up
  15. DW12? Not too bad in Mondeos, was it? Or XFs for that matter. Decent donk IMO, and not that different from the 2.0 that was fitted to a gazillion Mondeos/407/C5 etc
  16. That will land us in the pub lounge bar, so double win. I reckon 60mph ought to be about right in this fine steed
  17. It's not fully active. I believe it stiffens anti roll bar(s) selectively. AFAIK we've not had a fully active suspension production car although the Xantia Activa comes close. Possibly also modern Mercs with ride height control but even they don't do 'zero roll' cornering. Lots of moderns with magnetic fluid dampers too - again not the same thing. Prove me wrong?
  18. We're moving into our temp accommodation today, a holiday cottage in a nearby village. Pretty, but pretty cold. Sadly no log fire to warm it up. Anyway Mrs Grogee has borrowed a Luton from her work (Transit flavour) with a tail lift. The fun* part will be seeing if it fits over the narrow (and vertiginous) humpback bridge over the canal near our cottage. It's one of those bridges where you can't see anything except sky when you drive over it; I can't imagine how many accidents there have been. Hopefully we won't add to the tally.
  19. It's all a bit confusing with LPG, I don't get the 'litres' measure if it's a gas, although I guess the measure is for a set pressure when it's liquid. I also don't understand 80% being 'full' unless there's some sort of protection for temperature rises. 26mpg sounds a bit low although I know you lose 10-20% for LPG v pez. Is it a 5-cyl? Anyway the good news is it works! Well bought. I do like the S60, pretty car. TBH you might be better off with boggo spec on the HVAC (sticky flaps). Electric seats - meh, if you're like me you never adjust them once they're set. Heated is a nice to have, but you could put a towel on the radiator and sit on that in the mornings...
  20. You is racking up miles, man. In that case I think it's a 1963 Alvis coupe
  21. External (roof mount) antenna. You can get magnet mount ones for hatchbacks and route the wire in above the headlining and down behind the A-pillar trim. Internal windscreen mount ones are ok but struggle in poor signal areas. Also if you're using a dashcam and 12v -> 5v USB supply, this plays havoc with DAB reception.
  22. I do like a period stereo. I've got the original Philips in my Maestro but I'll be using a 90s Panasonic tape player for extra oomph (and decent speakers hidden away).
  23. You need help. But also, well done. I love Espaces
  24. I've been on this site too long. I really like this
