Ok, as this seems to have run it's course for this fundraizr, I shall close this off now and say thank you to everyone who contributed.  At first glance, it would appear that we've done enough to keep us going for about 4-5 months (useage depending) so that is superb news.  Exact figures will be posted once I am not held up in a hotel room and struggling to log in on the world's shittest wifi.

Thread resurrection. As I haven't seen anybody from the circus since last October there was many hugs from every body  saying they had missed me,  when I met them at Haydock Race course to move everything to Norwich Showground. I've never had that much of a reaction before. They are a good bunch of people and there is rarely any problems between anybody. Going to be here for about 3 weeks and I have got a fair bit of work to do that would have been done if I had been there in Holland, 4 weeks Xmas New Year, Glasgow, 2 weeks, Haydock, 1 week so a fair bit of stuff to sort. Starting with 2 bunk wagons that have leaks when it rains. What joy, chasing leaks. The water system I had has been somewhat wrecked by those that didn't have much of a clue so there's a few days to get that back to how I like it. I knew that would happen but I've said that I need to show somebody how it's done when I'm not there. Which at my age could be at any moment, or if my ankle gets any worse then I'm going to have to give it up.
There's been a few minor changes. A few different trucks, different performers, but not all, some new showgirls, etc. I shall leave you with 2 pic of my new circus 'rig'. One of where we are and a dizzel shot. If anyone wants to know what its like let me know. I'm sure you will notice a slight anomaly.

colino reacted to Bren in Mondeo injector ball ache
Our mondeo has been well behaved however of late a raspy sound and a smell in the cabin convinced me the exhaust had a leak. This turned out not to be the case. The 2.0 pug engine has two covers - the rearmost covers the injectors. Some dampness on the outside persuaded me to investigate further.

Oh dear. Only when I pulled the injector did I appreciate how grim it was. I ordered a puller from ebay rather than faff with pliers and pry bars.

Quite a substantial slide hammer - a few blows saw the injector loose. Access - the injectors and fuel rail are effectively in a box - is limited.

Grim. I could not belive the amount of shite that had built up. Very mercedes benz like. And the smell is gopping. Somebody said it was like cooked meat - sorry but if your meat smells like this I hope you have more than one bog.
I made the mistake of spraying carb cleaner on it. All this did was make it soft and even more of a pain to remove. A selection of flat screwdrivers and picks - aided by compressed air and henry the hoover - got rid of the shite and I was happy when I could see dull silver.

The injector was equally shocking and looked like a turd.

A combination of carb cleaner and wire brush in a drill got rid of the baked on crud.
The washer was utterly mullered - eroded on one side.

Indeed there was so much crud paranoia set in - I had a vacuum and compressed air and I found myself cranking the engine every so often just to clear the injector orifice.
Paranoia extended to the hole for the injector clamp screw. I had started to put it back but it was harder going than I would have liked so I stopped and wound it out.
I chased the hole out with an M8 x 1.25 tap.

Lack of access meant a pair of thin nosed pliers were the only thing I had that would fit. The tar that I had removed with carb cleaner had solidified inside the hole. More carb cleaner rags and compressed air got rid of the last. Eventually I put everything back after cutting a new seat.

I had to spend £80 on a new set of leak off pipes. Top tip - DO NOT pull back the green lug you can see - on old pipes it will snap - internet vids will show you how NOT to do it. Just get a small flat screwdriver and lever the nearest part of the green clip from the injector body.
Just as I tried to start the car it cranked once - and stopped. I shat myself - I was worried I had hydro locked the engine with carb cleaner even though I had been careful. It turns out the battery was dead.
A jump from a good battery and the car started almost immediately - my chef's kiss was short lived when the car died and wife unit pointed out diesel was pissing everywhere.
I had been caught out. The metal pipe from fuel rail to injector can be fitted the WRONG way around - they are the same pitch of thread but the fittings have a different taper. Fortunately I soon spotted my balls up and swapped it around.
I have also discovered that diesel is brilliant for making underbonnet plastic shine - every cloud etc.
Car started ok off a slave battery and I took it for a run.
The genuine ford leak off pipes were  not cheap however 4x genuine washers were only £12 - less than ebay prices.
I doff my cap to those of you that do this for a living - it took me 2-3 hours just to shift the tar. It's not a nice job.
Let's see how long it lasts.

I've likely written the story here but I can't find it so I doubt you'll be able to.
It wasn't long back from a garage and had developed a noise on right hand bends, I was heading home to investigate and was on a dual carriageway with a long left hand curve (so no noise was being made).
    PADINK! PADINK! PADINK!
I look left and see things coming off the car and disappearing into the night and then the front left corner falls down, I become a passenger and the car lurches toward the verge and comes to a halt in the gravel by the side of the road.
It was over in a moment.
I put the hazards on and got out to find that the weheel had exited stage left, creased the wing and left the car in the sitation you saw in the image.
I phoned the RAC and they said they be there in 2 or 3 hours or some such.
During the wait I found the wheel and 1 nut.
The RAC man turned up, dug a hole, jacked the car up with the world's biggest trolley jack and put the wheel back on with the nut I had found and 1 from each of the other wheels. He then followed me home.
For a while the groove i cut in the tarmac and the big hole in the gravel trap were visible on google street view but I can't find them now. I think there may have been another accident in the same spot as that area is no longer covered in the 2008 footage and there's tracks going up the verge.
I can pin down the exact location by lining up the two road signs in this image. The road has since been resurfaced so all traces have gone.

This footage is a somewhat more dramatic version of events

    MOT is tomorrow 🤞
Drove it into work. I might have to go round the car park a few times to make this roll over though.

The left headlight has been missing it's back cover since I've owned the car. It was actually cheaper to get a complete used light than the back cover. To get the light cover on, it is a battery out job to not cut up your hand, so haven't got around to it.
Anyway I noticed that bugs have got into the light and killed themselves presumably from the heat. Inside wasn't particularly clean after no doubt years of environmental grime getting in with the cover missing.

Given I have a whole new light unit (where someone has put a new headlight adjuster motor in to replace the commonly temperamental ones), it made sense to replace it.
It's supposed to be a bumper off job as you need access to a bolt inside the grille. However I couldn't be bothered jacking the car up and risking scratching the bumper up. So decided to take the grille off instead.

This is the bolt you need access to.

It was a right fight to get this out, especially the connector was seized on.

After a fight it was out.

New headlight looks the same and reassembly was the opposite of removal.
I'm not sure if it's aligned properly but that'll be picked up on the MOT tomorrow anyway. I suspect the lights are a bit high anyway since having all the springs replaced last year (it was a mix of wrong springs). So fully expect it to be failed and need adjustment for the MOT.

Following my post on 10th january, I've bought a new old stock radiator and taken it with the car's heater into Sheldrake & Well radiator repair in Ipswich.   They were wanting to charge £350+ plus VAT to recore the radiator, the new-old-stock one cost £150.  Still I took the new one into Sheldrake & Wells to have it pressure tested. Cost £25 + VAT but it offers me peace of mind.   The heater box is another sorry .. seems like they home-in on me.    In essence it comes down to my being a T-Fg-twat ..again, making an assumption and giving people the benefit of the doubt. Short version is that I took my old radiator in to get a quote for a recore. They gave me a price and also showed me a dozen or so radiators all ready for other customers to collect.  Each one of those had been recored and having been stripped and repainted looked not far off new.  That would be nice I thought, not least considering my car's radiator is 55 years old.  So while there I asked if they could do the same on the car's heater.  No problem the man replied ..£285 + Vat..  Again I just wanted the thing to be ready to refit, and thereafter be trouble free for the foreseeable life of me &/or the car.

^ first pic shows what it was like when I took it in.  ^^ second photo shows what it looked like when I collected it, after the core was replaced, and my having paid £285 plus VAT plus another £6 plus VAT for an o-ring.   Aside from the second photo being out of focus (my apologies for that) and two shiny screws it looks exactly the same.     As I said I'm a T.Fg.twat insomuch as, having seen those chemically cleaned and freshly repainted radiators, I assumed for that sort of money I might get more than a core which cost £90 inc VAT ..from a well know jaguar specialist (almost never the cheapest source for parts).     Sheldrake and Wells, Ipswich is that company's name should you also wish to give them £200 + VAT for doing almost nothing.
Just to make my day, they forgot to give me back ..and I forgot to ask for, the control valve.  So I've got to go back.  I phoned on Friday and asked but the chap I spoke to couldn't see it there. Mark, who I had dealt with doesn't work on Fridays, so I suggested he might be called, just to ask where it might be, so I might come back and collect it.  No that was not an option. "His time off is his time off"..  "please call again on Monday."
Happy customer ?  What do you think.. ??
    - - -
Guess what .. I needed to take the core out to repaint the heater box  ..inside as well as outside. . .

^ possibly a dozen screws hold the lid on and the core just lifts out.  Only one was missing and another fell on the floor before I even reached for my screwdriver.
    ...moving on

^ Hardura faced felt (noise insulation to prevent engine bay noise from going through the heater box and into the car) on the back face was still in good nick. Using a scraper I removed all of these carefully, if only to be used as patterns.

^ As it turns out, removing the fan was a pain-in-the-asp .. at Sheldrake & Wells charge rate it might have cost me a couple of grand extra.!  As you can see the squirrel-cage type fan rotor is not straight to the hole so when the nut was released the darn thing wouldn't lift out. Behind that is the fastenings for the motor, so it does need to come off.

^ The motor wasn't sitting square to the case and the base of the squirrel cage fan was bent.  The only way I could release it was to hammer a drift to partly straighten the bent cage and then to wedge and otherwise prise the motor straighter.   ..just another two minute job..

^ with the cage out I could see what had happened.  Some primate changed the type of fan motor. To do so they had drilled a ring of holes and then crudely ripped out the centre so as to create a larger hole ..for the motor's slightly raised boss. However they hadn't flatten the edges of the ring of twisted and ripped out holes, and so even then - the motor didn't sit flat. They'd then buggered the squirrel cage by bending its bottom to hammer it in.  This was clearly parts of a scientific study to disprove Darwin's theory of evolution which effectively claims ; the smarter and stronger of a species will better survive than the lesser creature.  Alas, if only the parents of such primate mechanics had been rendered infertile.. the cause of classic car restoration would be so much easier.
Three neat holes around the outside scratch mark are most likely from the original fan's mountings.  The three, somewhat skewed, brazed on bolts on the back face (see below) had tubes of rubber over them. I might only guess they were added because the replacement motor only has two mounting screws, and so rocked ..because it wasn't sitting flat (on the butchered hole edges).  To stop the motor from rocking ..and the squirrel cage squeaking as it turned, those bolts must have been added to steady the motor.  Ingenious !   ..or something like that.

I'll deal with that later.  Moving on. . .

^ Today I cleaned off the residue of glue, the remaining old paint (clearly originally applied without keying or primer), and the surface rust.  And repainted it (inside and out) . . .

^  This box has lasted with just a very thin coat of original paint, despite a slight leak so I'm told, for some 55 years. And so the epoxy primer with top coat should help towards it providing another 255 years of service.
Now, left to dry overnight, I'll redress the fan's mountings tomorrow or Monday.
I bid you a good evening.   I could do with a beer !
    Pete
