Print is dead. So said Egon Spengler in ghostbusters (1984); who no doubt paraphrased someone else.
I think it was easier to make good copy when there were genuinely bad new cars out there. It’s also driven by what interests most buyers so financial stuff, tax stuff and how the infotainment system works are all big hitters for some. The car as an appliance.
I quite like what car, but favour 1990s editions, and sorry to repeat myself CAR from about 87-97. Wudrecommend
PS- no doubt What car? Would not recommend a used Cadillac hearse to undertake the busting of ghosts. Merely adequate steering lock and dire combined cycle fuel economy only merits 2 stars I’m afraid.

Decided to show the Volvo a bit of love and clean up and paint the sills before the rot set in,  unfortunately once the wire wheel was used I could see the need for a bit of sparkly stick time.
Not bad really for a 22 year old motor, the repair was quite small and will make sure of no aggro at mot time for a few more years. I cut back much more than needed but wanted to be on perfect metal to make the welding easier.I think once the stonechip is on it would be barely noticeable so very happy with the result.

Great posts, I love to see somebody with proper skills giving a car love like this.
Taking time to put the factory pressings back in panels that wont be seen shows true commitment.

    Rear quarter

Chicken wire and papier mache constituted much of the left rear quarter panel and arch, although the seller was a nice bloke and had told me this and pictured it before when selling the car, so I knew from the off it needed replacement. Repair panels for this are available, but being  pattern parts quality is questionable shite. And being only available from the States I had to factor shipping and duty. And that meant shipping in a shipping container and collecting from Southampton docks, rather than just having it sent conventionally, because the full quarter is so sodding long it was oversize and no conventional couriers would ship it internationally!! So all in the landed fee with all this was something around £400, plus taking a day's holiday off work for a jolly to Southampton docks

I spent a good day or two with the panel just planishing out any imperfections and bits I wasn’t happy with. It’s always easiest to get the panel just right when it’s off the car and on the bench, so I took my time

    Manipulated with wood....

These repair panels are rolled rather than pressed, and it came with a crack on the arch lip were it had been over-stretched. So I TIG’ed this up

The rear quarter’s curvaceous profile isn’t consistent front to back; the curvature is gentler at the front behind the door and gets tighter as it goes, so the transition needed fettling, as this progressive curve wasn’t present on the repair panel

Radiused the corners, scribed with a penny washer

Carefully trimmed the panel to size

This was always going to be a test. I rear quarter replacement on any car is hard, and the straight lines on a rear quarter of any 60’s yank are critical; there’s no hiding it if the swages are off or its all distorted to buggery.  Distortion is the biggest enemy on a big, flattish expanse like this, so I TIG welded it to keep the heat down and allow for softer bead which could be plannished later. TIG isn’t forgiving to any gap between the panels either, so I cut the old panel out……

repaired the boot side panel once the panel cut out

…..weld-thru primed the flange, tacked the new quarter in, starting from the bottom, and file-fitted it if needed as I went along to the scribed line. Took me hours!! Tack, file file file, Tack, file file file…..

Until I got to this stage

Made these clamps up to hold the bottom edge in place, as illustrated above

I first discovered autoshite after my purchase of a  Vauxhall 2300s which I had bought to replace my modern Audi as a daily driver. I was really fed up  with modern cars and eml lights so went back to basics.
I was alerted to the fact that I was being talked about on this forum as some tosser with too much money buying a low mileage classic and using it daily.  Well all those things are probably right but I am also a long time chod botherer as well.
I did use the Vauxhall as a daily for a couple of years but although I loved it I do like Autos so bought myself a Princess ( I also seem to have a strange fetish for Velour as well) this however needed a fair amount of welding and mechanical work to put it back on the road.

Dippy reacted to rusty998 in That little bit of welding, Allegro content, de'rusting continues
The Allegro or Rusty as I may as well call her got a bit more attention today, the floor and inner sill area is not finished yet so I decided to start on a completely different part, to recap the right hand side is rusted rather nicely from front to back, the front tie bar mount I removed seems to be unobtainable so after measuring the thickness ( 2mm ) I started to remove loose rust and disassemble it, luckily the inner parts where the rubbers and bar fit is still relatively strong so the outer part which is spot welded and Gas welded has to come off, I've ordered 40cm×40cm×2mm of steel sheet that should be enough to make the tie bar mount and some spare for the end of the chassis leg which is also needing attention,

the grinding and hammering was annoying the neighbours so I went out the front to annoy a different set of neighbours, some cutting, drilling and grinding later to remove more racing ginger I had a hole,

As you can see this revealed yet more rust although it is more surface than rotten through mostly,  the front section will need a bit letting in,
I knocked up a repair section for the outside of the chassis leg with my first attempt at a swaged hole
I had to chop a lot of the front right hand corner off for access to the inner skin which was..... you guessed it rusty,  the poor car is looking rather sorry for itself by the end of play, this I'm sure will upset the two bob snobs around me and will for sure be lowering the house prices too
I'm looking forward to receiving the 2mm steel sheet to have a play with,  more soon .

The 940 clicked 222222 yesterday, its been the cheapest car I have ever owned.
After 3 years I have had to fit 4 new tyres and replace the front brakes recently but the parts were cheap enough. So with all those new bits it should be good to 250K now.

Driving up the M6 about an hour ago in moderate rain and heavy traffic when this twat in a MK4 Golf goes across three lanes, up the hard shoulder and back across three lanes narrowly missing several cars and comes out in front of a new Merc estate. My wife says ‘it’s times like these when you wish you had a dash camera’ just as the Merc lights up like a Christmas tree with blues and twos. Superb!
