I doubt the fuel is stale unless its been sat for a year or more, killswitch off? Have you a spark? Does the fuel pump prime when you turn it on?

I know its a 50, I know its old. I just wondered if there was any way I can either wring a consistent power / speed out of this or are there any other bikes I should be looking at (even electrical) that would consistently do 30 even up a hill?

 

On the plus side I can see 50 on the clock coming down that same hill and as the ANPR average speed cameras face into the traffic I can just grin wildly at them whilst the cars stick to 30....

A less restrictive exhaust and a bigger carb and some careful setting up will see gains, you're not a small bloke so any 50cc is going to struggle a bit to be honest, I don't know how old your daughter is but once you start fiddling you could be making the bike illegal if she's only 16 and restricted to a moped, whether that is a concern of not is up to you.

So, this means that we're looking at probably being served our 2 months notice around Christmas if he can't get an investor lined up to take it on. I know that it's our fault for not saving a deposit on a mortgage, etc. But at the time, we couldn't afford to and now were trapped by the fucking cost of renting. 

Still. There's always a tent in a layby I suppose. 

 

Just remember if you keep paying the rent it'll take at least 6 months to evict you, so there's no need to rush into an unsuitable property

In the UK - especially now - many think the MOT test is some kind of service. Lots of badly neglected cars driven by people who don't care and simply do not have the means to look after them properly. Try getting a 10 - 12 year old diesel car repaired that has fuelling / emission issues - workshops are shying away from anything that could be in the workshop for days.

A modern car should be good for over 200k - bigger engined ones even more. Unfortunately many will never see the TLC they deserve to get to that kind of mileage - it costs money to maintain a car properly. And is not as special as getting a new one.

Did you miss the 'if maintained properly' in my post? my Spanish friends only fix their cars when they go wrong, and are no better at maintaining them than their UK counterparts, they do fix them eventually rather than scrap them as it would be financially stupid to scrap them like we do here.

I don't agree with this, why would it be dead?  they will happily do 300k if maintained properly, cars have been ridiculously cheap for years in the UK, try buying a 11 year old mondeo estate in Spain for £5k, they are around 7500-8000€, we have all benefitted from cheap cars previously but I actually don't mind that older cars are beginning to retain some value and not become worthless simply because of their age.

It was five metres of stretched B5 Pisshat shite. 

Very top spec, had EVERY toy you could imagine in circa 2004. Interior was a lovely place to be and the seats were very comfy, that's where the good news ends. 

It suffered from chronic water ingress which I was constantly chasing, seemed like I fixed one leak and it came in somewhere else. As a result the body electrics had a mind of their own. 

The rust was pretty dire for a reasonably young car at the time, the bootlid and front wings dissolved rapidly.

The front end suspension was a knockfest. After a few months I'd replaced absolutely everything including wheel bearings and it was fine for about two weeks, then it started again. It burst about 4 coil springs in the space of six months. 

The ungrateful cunt got some other works including some rear bushes. About six months after I bought it, it lunched it's reverse gear entirely, a forwards only motor from this point. 

I sold it to Arnold Clark, their thorough test drive consisted of one forwards lap round their car park. I bit their hand off for the sum offered, turned tail and got the fuck out of there. 

In hindsight I persevered with it far too long, I'd cut my losses far earlier now. 

It's fine though, the interior didn't rattle. VAG quality*. 

I had one of those too,  it wasn't rusty but it suffered similar issues. 

My worst is probably a 307 estate,  I'll never travel to view a car on the last train of the day with no way of getting home other than buying the car again. 

My recent V70 was a nail too,  but the 307 pips it.

It's exactly the sort of thing I'll be getting next year, soft, smooth and comfy, the Z900 was the complete opposite and tiring to ride for any distance hence the reason for getting rid of it.

Ha, it looks bigger than that Fiesta!  Of course it isn't really, it just weighs more.  Had a lovely ride through Wales on the way home from buying it, it was great for that.  Took it into Reading today, when the football was on - it was fucking hopeless there, the engine doubles as a space heater and any attempt to filter was embarrassingly cut short by the width of it.  Still love it though.

Since selling the Z900RS I've been idly looking at these, it's amazing they have been out 20 years but still look fresh-ish. 

Nice to see the old girl getting some tlc.

I'm sure a lot of modern stuff is just as bad to see out of, nice looking cars though. 

I drove my mates scirroco over the weekend, I found the visibility out of it horrendous, the A pillars were that thick wagons were hidden at times, it was a lot worse than my wife's 308cc and that has chunky pillars as its a cabrio, no thanks, downright dangerous and a liability in town when you throw pedestrians into the mix. 

That was similarly economical mind. 

Why should they be paid the same as men? from what I saw the level of football played was nowhere near the standard of the male game. 

Agreed with the references to the war, it's pathetic really, they played well to win and congrats to the Women's team but let's not get carried away now.
