  1. 2.3 was a Ford engine, launched in Sierra and Granada in the late 80s, also transits and these.  As above 90s RS2000 had a 16v head, at one time a conversion was to put the 2.3 block in the Escort.

A friend was one of seven kids and his dad had a Galaxy when they first came out replacing a 21 Savanna.  When my friend passed his test he would drive us and we had various uncomplimentary names for it.  Fond memories of licking the windows at traffic lights.

  2. Hastings are awful in my experience.

This, i've found, makes the single biggest different on an individual cars price.

I've found even on something with a ton of mods, if it's a 2nd or 3rd car, the price collapses, to the point 'buy more cars' almost becomes sound financial advice.

Yeah, that's very true. Once our two main cars are insured everything else is next to nothing.

It has a non standard rear silencer of unknown make, but it's been on there since before I bought it. I also declare the Pipercross air filter element and Bluetooth head unit just to be legit.

Are you supposed to declare stereos now?

Frankly, any of those things is not a mod I would bother declaring.  Plenty of people wouldn't even know they weren't standard.

On our shite cars, what are the insurance going to pay for the vehicle in the event of a claim anyway? The square root of fuck all.  What you're really paying for is liability coverage.  They can't weasel out of third party claims because of a non-standard air filter so why worry?

By declaring it to be 'modified' you're putting yourself in a whole other category and paying the insurance grifters hundreds extra for no reason.

  4. It's a nice choice to have.

I've driven the M3 and had an E36 and they're very pleasing to drive but may well get the arse out occasionally.  That's good in my book and it was only provoked by being silly, hardly a widowmaker.

190E appeals as a more grown up option, quite possibly more satisfying to own in the long term, from that era of supposed high build quality. More obscure, more class, 4 doors...

Either way, you won't go far wrong with a good one.

Sorry to hear this, have you made contact with RNIB? My grandmother had some help from them - she had wet macular degeneration and we think couldn’t see anything towards her end of life - she tried to hide it though.

Just to echo this,my dad has similar and the rnib are very good with audio books etc.

  6. Is that on the street?  Looks like a car park.

Heathrow bus chat all very helpful, turns out there's even a hotel courtesy bus that goes from the T4 hotels to T5.  I spoke to several tube and train staff yesterday, in between the various train cancellation notices, and none knew anything about buses.

  7. First World problem I know, but why is it so bloody hard to get from terminal 5 to terminal 4 at heathrow? I've been to a lot of shit airports in my life but they let you walk from one terminal to another. It took me an hour to go about a mile today, ended up on the tube to Hatton Cross and back. Was starting to feel like Tom Hanks by the end of it.

  8. I think the market is just doing more or less what it's always done and following the popularity of cars from 30 years ago.   Nostalgia for 40 and 40 somethings.  COVID and inflation are making things a bit odd but the basic trend is the same.  Not sure tax rates matter, a lot of classics aren't taxed year round anyway.

I know some people get a lot out of it but I can never get too worked up about originality or whether a car has been restored or not.  To me, driving an old car is fun because it's a different experience to moderns.

I don't really mind if the seats aren't correct or it's a bit scruffy, you still get the experience when you're driving it.  I would much rather have a functional but slightly scruffy car that you can use and enjoy than something that's valuable enough to be an investment and be scared to drive it.
