You're not the only one having issues with that guy:

The car looks ace - I'd just gently preserve the patina it has if it were mine. Saw a much shinier 122 in Aldi car park today and thought what a smart thing it was.

Nice one. Worth paying for a job like that, where your first go is also your last, and is likely to be pretty shabby
-
Did mine in '88 in what must have been a fairly new 205 diesel.
Round here in Stroud I'm pretty sure there's a Rover 25 working as a driving school car, so must be knocking on 20 years old. But why not? Easy to drive, light clutch etc.

On the upside, it looks like the roof is very strong.

They're old cars which should = simple and cheap to fix.
But I get the impression from YT vids that this isn't the case.

Yep, the decent gearbag will be helping. The 4hp22 in my Classic is a bloody thirsty old thing, only locks up at 56ish and contributes heavily to the dipsomania.
I thought these had a shit GM gearbox that failed with disappointing predictability and expense?

If you ended up around 24-25 mpg I'd say that's very reasonable. That kind of thirst wouldn't put me off - it's miles better than the old Rover V8.

Brilliant cars.
Had two of these, one in Germany and one here. C823 BEU - went up north but probably bean tins by now

Kwality repair - got to be worth a go! 🏆
But yes, it will explode in heavy traffic when you're late for something important, have nice clothes on, and someone in the car you're trying to impress

A really good clean and a few winds of very sticky tape will sort that out.
New one is only £10 or so if you can be bothered.

Rikens are decent tyres for the money. I do so few miles my tyres perish before they wear out, so they've been my choice for a couple of cars lately.
-
Surprised that didn't fail.
Agreed, I'd get that replaced as long as the rest of the car's worth it.

Yeh, It is a lot easier to pull the motor. You do need a decent trolley jack though.
Use it as a good excuse to buy one of these:
You will never regret it. I got one a few years ago and use it often, having made do with the usual little DIY one for ages.
It makes SO many jobs easier and safer. Could make a nice Xmas present too 😉

That's the kind of efficiency I'd expect from no-nonsense chap like Mick Lynch.
That is Mick sorting out the straps, isn't it?

Hey, at least it didn't catch fire!
And it's a dead easy fix, with cheap bits. Win, I'd say 😎

I try to pay by Paypal if I can. They will deal with a refund, and if the seller won't respond then they refund automatically in your favour.
Maybe try Ankor wax or something on the paintwork? There look to be many different potions available.
