I made use of the large press at my former place of work. The bearing slid on easily.

I’m now home. But I forgot to press on this odd pointless shim. So in the oven it goes

I went to a local car meet Thursday night.

And remembered that I’d seen the side light cone on when I indicated. So I had a quick look in the car park. When I indicate right (ignition on/engine running) the corresponding side light comes on both front and rear. How odd. And happens both sides.

now. Some folk shout “it’s an earth issue!” But why? I don’t think it is. If it was an earth issue, why would the rear come on, and be bright like it’s been switched on?

I think it has parking lights. So when the ignition is off, and you indicate, the side light comes on… I recon something is confused. Either the stalk is faulty or the ignition switch. Got to look into this asap

Brakes built up. Surprising how easily everything went back together. The back plate and all its trimmings are completely rot free. Nothing fell to bits.

Drum is on, just need to bleed the cylinder up and hopefully job is done

With no one answering messages on eBay, I did the right thing and ordered this wheel bearing for 9 quid.

it has the same SKF number on it. So I’m hoping that it’s the right one.

Passed with two advisories. Nearside rear wheel bearing noisy (I had heard it a while back, glad it’s a wheel bearing not the diff) and nearside rear wheel arch slight corrosion.

he was very impressed with it, and the emissions were really low too! It does run good 👌

MOT booked in on Monday. 2nd test since it was recommissioned.

sill check - they’re still there. They’ve not disintegrated over winter!

Couple of things to note. The gearbox has bled on my nice clean garage floor. Great.

Looks like it’s coming from the selector shaft, that’s a new one. I think pretty much every orifice on this box has leaked.

oil pooled up in that gap behind the nut. Not entirely sure what the next move is…
time for a service. The 20l of 20/50 heavy duty diesel oil came in useful again. Probably got enough for 3/4 more after this one.

now this should be interesting. We all know the fuel tank was crusty inside…

    looks a bit brown

    oh that’s very brown

Well that’s 12 months and about 2500 miles worth of fuel. I think this year I’ll be tanking the tank off for a refurb.

Hurrah. Plates are on. Front was ok, rear plate had just been screwed through the rear panel (twats) and the original holes were missing the screw holders. Someone sent me those in the post, and two extra for my B series manta. Rear plate is now stuck on correctly.

I finally got my tool box into my freshly painted garage. Then washed the Carlton and put her in there.

doesn’t she look cozy in there!

don’t get comfortable. There’s a rusty old manta going in tomorrow.  Shame really lol.

Those of you that know me well, I like period correct dealer number plates. And while this car has period correct plates, the rear is from a Volvo dealer (John Tallis) and the front is plain.

I just happened to go onto eBay last night and have a look in the Vauxhall section of the classic department. To my surprise a 1.3 cavalier currently on bids and the original dealer is Welch Cars of Bristol. Same dealer that this one came from. I messaged the seller, who was happy to take more pictures of the rear number plate. Unfortunately no dealer sticker exists.

now, I have messaged RetroPlates who made me some for my manta a few years back. I potentially have three options.
    1. Stick with red writing?
    2. Change to black writing?
    3. Have the GM logo coloured like this

what are peoples opinions? The original red ones on the cav look boring.

Well, I’m bored at work. So a few jobs done today.

fuel leak investigated. Probably the sender unit seal. Nothing dripping now, but I’ve dropped below half a tank now, so I’ve nipped the ring of bolts up. Will keep an eye on that one.

I’ve got an issue where the alternator doesn’t always start alternating once the engine is started. A rev sorts that out. I’ve put it down to the fact that the idle control valve is restricted with that 2p. But I’ve also got an issue when I turn the headlights on I get a massive drop in voltage. I’ve cleaned the main engine earth up and replaced the bolt into the chassis.

fault still there. There’s one earth left from alternator to engine block, I’ll do that another day. If that doesn’t cure it, alternator will need replacing or repairing.

Been using the Carlton as much as possible over the festive period.

went to visit Nan Xmas eve at Carmountside Crematorium and my passenger (84) commented on how well the Carlton looked. So I took this picture

it has developed a fuel leak. But right now I’m trying my hardest to move back home, so I’ll get to it when I can.

It’s been parked up for the best part of 6 weeks? Maybe longer? I lost count. Got fed up of driving the Discovery so picked it up. Started first turn of the key, not wet inside and drives lovely in comparison to the td5. Glad to be back in it for a few days

This is now 100% a daily (apart from tomorrow) until I get my next set of wheels sorted. Today I replaced the rear oil seal on gearbox.

    new. From JP automatic transmissions.

hopefully that’s one more oil leak sorted.

Went to cinema. Guy did the right thing and parked with “his kind”

safety in numbers right? This car park in N-U-L is a bit dodgy, and I’m surprised it was still here when I got back, the golf wasn’t.
