I really should update this more but there's not really much going on at the moment. I really try not to work on cars between November and March if I can help it. Do a few little jobs in autumn and hope they'll last until spring without touching them. Being Škodas they're quite good at that.
So instead we'll have a little light relief. Can't help thinking the base blue on Czech railway locos is quite close to the blue on my Favorit. This first picture is a bit dark, this was taken at twilight, they do look lighter in the flesh.

But is it just me that can see more than a passing resemblance in the styling too. They are cousins after all. The locos were built by Škoda at Plzeň and the car by Škoda at Mladá Boleslav ať a time when both were still the same company (only Škoda Auto were sold to Volkswagen, Škoda Transportation are still a proper Czech company). The locos were built between 1984 and 1992. Škoda had the design for the Favorit pretty much ready to go by 1983 but for some reason the government wouldn't let them build it until 1987 and my car is 1992.
Neither design has a curved panel anywhere and both look quite utilitarian though as far as I know Mr Bertone was not involved in the design of the locos although he might have looked at one before coming up with the Favorit.

I am tempted to get a white and dark blue wrap over my bonnet and get some ČD logos made up.

Or I could just do this.

One has to assume that thirty years ago all railway staff cars would have been Favs.

    So…
Douglas Adams once wrote “I love deadlines, I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by”
Another chunk of time has passed. Another deadline has flown by… and the Nova is still sitting on the drive.
A while ago I drained the tank, and bought some new fuel to put in. And then… nothing.
    A recurring theme.
This weekend having spent some time on eBay I set to working out the running issues. I refilled the tank, and set to replacing ignition components. New plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. New fuel in and a dribble down the carb and it started straight up.., and died. Interesting that with the old ignition parts it used to take a few goes, that’s a good sign.
With an helpful assistant I ran it for a minute or two on easy start by squirting into the carb, so that proves we’re not getting fuel through. Not sure if that’s the empty tank not having enough in it from two Jerry cans to prime the pump. Or something more like a seized fuel pump.
In an ideal world I could do with it reliably running for next week… so will put a little more work in this weekend.

I used the sedan about ten times last year, if that. Couple of shows and runs on nice days.
Coming out the house to it every day, I felt bad looking at it. It wanted for nothing, but left me lacking enthusiasm, and I've been taking my hatch Civic out over it every time. Drove it around Christmas and it felt weird. Not right, I'd fallen out of love with it. I drove it again on Valentine's day and I just knew it wasn't right any more. The Yaris has taken up its practical side, and the hatch Civic my passion and the fun side. What use was it to me?
My friend needed to borrow a car. I lent it out, 'cause I trust her with it.

And well, she's ended up keeping it, cause she loves it. I've got my money back on it and it's gone on to a great home where I'll still see it about. Driving around with it there with me is surreal, but it's the right thing. I'm glad it's being used and that I get to vicariously enjoy it.
It's in good hands, it's with a certain Favorit owner who doesn't do things by halves...
It's been a sweet two and a half years. But sometimes, if you love things, you need to set them free.
