Today i woke up and didnt think for one moment i would be involved in a botched car purchasing goosechase that thankfully has gone well !

anyhow the story goes that after dropping the wor lass of at her community nursing call i decided to pop down the local bland mobeel dealers see if they had any 'px to clear' nonsense and after abit of cruising up and down in the skodbotherer  found the best thing i could find my lovely gf for her job.
So anyhow right at the back of the lot i spy a J plate proton and the palms get sweaty,,heart races at the thought of understeer and a raspy exhaust but i darent ask by myself because i'd look like a div ,,so wait for the first ladies return from the call and we head up as a team effort 2 against hopefully one style.

laterly we ask about it and the good fellow says its part of his late father in laws estate and after some anecdotal stories regarding the fellows car we leave a number and head out,,then literally 2 mins later he pops out and says it can be had for 150 to liquidate it into the probate WIN

so i book a test for a few hours ahead of picking it up so to be able to insure it and get it to run despite sitting 6 months

we do that but we juggle organising that with travelling about for her job, and her uncles that have rocked up to do wiring in our house but obviously i'm iching to see if it will even get to the test station lol

anyhow the time beckons and we set of back up with the 150quid,,a can of pez and some easy start,,abit of help from the booster pack and its away

get in and give it some clutch muscle and the handbrake pops free so we set of and straight away what a beast smooth and quite a refined machine so evidently i boot it to see what the 12 valve can muster and straight away regret it as it boggs down and stutters like feck as i approach the a61 main roundabout ,,abit of clutch slipping and throttle feathering see's us across that old danger zone and we stutter and bogg our way to kwikfit whereby it somewhat clears up its act
brakes good and running smooth ish i feel confident of a mere rust fail sheet

course i'd not tried the wipers untill i got there and watch as the wiper arm runs across the screen sans wiper ,,,

anyhow the car cut out on the test and wouldnt restart as its dead bazzer and  cheap ass new fuel pump died simultaineously ,,so only way to get the beast home was to rob the facet one off the skoda and pikey fit it

despite abandoning the test the tester was a top guy who was loving the emergence of a dinasour like this and coincidently is a RR member haha
i concluded i had been too ambitious with the car lol

anyhow banal action pics

took this pic covertly because there was loads of general public around,,note the accidental oil and pez spillage from hand pumping the fuel pump

fitted up the facet,,earth jammed in the manifold thing mount and handily a live taken from a mysterious but available live

we then set off back noting that if the car stalled which i was fearing it might if the facet was maybe too much for the weird SU thing so plenty of left foot breaking and feathering going on to keep it going

we got home and after one cheeky sidewalls on the road understeer into the street it decided to cut out finaly

inspection

sunroof works all good

deceased chaps over glass's , it was said he was 97 when he stopped driving this and only did so because he broke his back and soon after passed on , he sounds like abit of a legend

wor lass likes the car and not even ironically

tentatively we open the boot

this was viewed with suspicion as i had the thought of it having shit or a dead pet inside but alas the fellow found a alternative use for his handbag

WTF is going on with the wheel well,,spare and garage tool set housing ?

not bad i thought given it literally only ran badly for about 20mins after a 6month sit

worst bit of rot

i must remove these before a teenager etc kicks them off and only leaves the smashed carcase for me to refit before attending any car show (ahh actually thats someone else who did that)  either way they remove the need for stomach pumping as just looking at them does that for me

so a good weld clean and carb sort out should see it back to health and on the highway and to think 10 years ago i thought these were dire,,and perenialy going to stick around forever how times change

Well forwarding a few weeks sees the car moteed after a massive run of issues ,mainly it cutting out in all the wrong places roundabouts ,junctions et al and also the brake hose leaked on the retest, so long story short the car went for an mot 6 times 2 of which it got towed home by my mateys rapid which incidently we found had a towing eye behind the aftermarket tail pipe,,and when my skoda towed it mine seemingly didnt even have one at all being a pre 83 car ratchet strap and a solid bar ftw!

the hose was salvages by levering it out the caliper,,peeling out the thread spring left behind and chopping it down to good thread and copper washering it

carb meant fitting a leccy pump and blocking the return hose and even with that it still fuel starved little did i know it had a minute filter in the float chamber inlet which couldnt be removed so while being in a macdonalds carpark and limited in tools i stabbed it through which worked but promptly flooded the engine ,which it has done sporadicaly since returning it to stock,,float perforated maybe

anyhow,,done 2000 miles in it , and even did a recent honeymoon away up north yorks in which it behaved ok ! exhaust breakage aside

this let go at around midnight but fortunatly wasnt too antisocial unless using load

i went offroad, in the peak district sect 59 baiting

then chronologically got married,,and went honeymooning to the 'heartbeat' village which was really geared up for the older generation imo and it had a few rotten anglias and a whole swarm of sheep littering the roads

went to Whitby town which incidently didnt have any chippys that did 'waxa mint' food more like acceptable but not making the best of the sea air, more importantly however after circling the carpark i found the best space to keep the paintjob intact with a car on equal terms to my own

the moors genuinely are a beautiful place to drive around the scale of the place is huge and the wildlife is massively abundant aside from the medievel forest clearing the landscape is fantasticly barren yet colourful

this diesel engine was found at random 1/2 a mile south of the village and drove a waterpump which also serve to cool the engine , sadly it was seized but apeared to be a method of pulling water up to troughs in the fields from a river ,although having said that the head height might have even been a little beyond atmospheric on the suction side at aprox 20meters

Rosedale Chimney Bank the steepest in Britain,,,what a ridiculous road , 1 in 3 and a severely performance damped hillstart that entailed, note i had wor wifey hold the brake pedal down because in 1st it wouldnt hold at all and the HB was limiting

loads of these about also,,seemed to not like being heckled by passers by

all the river fords i encountered were abit feeble or none existant this time of year

a great many of these gravel carparks in the north yorks bush
affording great views and lack of tractive ability

this has a float,,which doesnt float anymore, revarnishing or take out the 4g13 for a saab turbo engine ? (unlikely the latter due to it being the only runner atm haha

Had another little inroad into attempting an mot, needless to say it managed to fail on various sharp edges, the rack boot being in the passenger footwell both rear tyres and the sill needing to be seam welded all the way round etc

anyhow i got a boot from the local unipart and whacked that on the rack,,,massively fiddly to do and easy to cut the universal diameters off in such a way it tears the boot in a very counter productive fashion but it was sorted properly anyway
brake hose replacement went ok but the old hose took a large portion of the threads out of the caliper so the new one is borderline stripped, will replace both

welding was sorted but the wind basically turned the bead into crap so thats needing redone lol

back tyres wanted swapping but i noted that these days tyres are expensive all over the shop ,,£15 for one out the scrap yard and 15quid for fitting elsewhere or 25quid for a partworn fitted up or 46quid for a budget making it £50 min this i decided wouldnt do so went all 1930's on it

a decent crowbar is a must aong with a hefty loaded wheel ,,and for the best lols dont deflate the tyre

letting down the jack breaks away the bead with consumate ease

must be carefull not to ruin the sealing flap on the bead so only unload the tyre via the well closest to the rim edge

back comes off the same but its abit more tricky because either the tyre or the rim gets in the way

new tyre eyeing up the rim, i used a cheeky blast of double T for pro's and it did rather help

Getting the tyre to inflate can be really tricky i found that it may just seal enough to set the bead away but mainly ive had to pull one bead on as much as possibly by hand looking much like a primate trying to spacehop the wheel then useing the old tyre i lay the wheel on it and press the rim down to rest th bead against the rim and that doesnt fail

cost of tyres doing it that way, £30 two years ago haha

the oil drum has now become garden furniture in a sort of 'on the social' kind of fashion because its a faff to cut given it having structural rigidity enough to need slitting discs et al
so anyhow i cracked on with Kevin Bacons white escort van

more activity in the form of a topped up welder and moar gas

floor bit and inner/inner sill plopped in ,,really needed a double hinged hand for that tbh

also this bit is what differentiates a 90's car A pillar to a 70's version in terms of a 1.5mm thick extra section to add abit of crush resistance when the wheel is trying to fold up the passenger 'cell' in an offset crash which is helpfull hoever as i cut away the secondary inner sill i popped this lawnmower handle as a back stop and welded a new simpler inner sill over it

This i really didnt fancy doing as by this stage i'd become really slack and bored but powered on ahead without even bothering to blow over with the knot wheel to expunge the paint

closed it up like the sows ear purse it actually is ,,,next will be the outer sill well once its been flatted and painted up inside

blimey that transit in my eyes is still a new vehicle only fairly recently has that shape transit in my mind finally replaced the mk3/4/5 in area's that dont enjoy mid to upper quartile economic success

if the car sills are the same then thats a good bonus with ebay having them listed fairly cheaply

i have thought maybe welding in some cds and tying it in to the surrounding metal but i think its the floor that shall take a patch first,,even before that though ideally i'd love a plasma cutter just incase old john boy or reginald et al is asleep at least then it could be done without being a massively  obnoxious unlikeable rough scrap dealing sort of guy

it amazes me that focii and fiestas at a pre mot stage are showing signs of surface corrosion even wor first lady knows where modernish fords go and she doesnt have any car interest , at least the days of badly welded to rust patching is not a dying art yet should make mots passable for the next few years untill welding becomes a weird concept to younger testing talent

next to no messing about was require to get the panel to fit well enough to butt weld ,just a case of lining the panel up and scoring the metal overlap with a kitchen knife then triming it back

for literally no preferential reason i started from the back

the panels needed joggling so it was a case of weld,,stick knife in, weld

cheeky patch at the back, this was covered in powercoating with is a horrible coating to try and weld through ,,or wire brush off lol

motivation is slowly building

Today i woke up and didnt think for one moment i would be involved in a botched car purchasing goosechase that thankfully has gone well !

anyhow the story goes that after dropping the wor lass of at her community nursing call i decided to pop down the local bland mobeel dealers see if they had any 'px to clear' nonsense and after abit of cruising up and down in the skodbotherer  found the best thing i could find my lovely gf for her job.
So anyhow right at the back of the lot i spy a J plate proton and the palms get sweaty,,heart races at the thought of understeer and a raspy exhaust but i darent ask by myself because i'd look like a div ,,so wait for the first ladies return from the call and we head up as a team effort 2 against hopefully one style.

laterly we ask about it and the good fellow says its part of his late father in laws estate and after some anecdotal stories regarding the fellows car we leave a number and head out,,then literally 2 mins later he pops out and says it can be had for 150 to liquidate it into the probate WIN

so i book a test for a few hours ahead of picking it up so to be able to insure it and get it to run despite sitting 6 months

we do that but we juggle organising that with travelling about for her job, and her uncles that have rocked up to do wiring in our house but obviously i'm iching to see if it will even get to the test station lol

anyhow the time beckons and we set of back up with the 150quid,,a can of pez and some easy start,,abit of help from the booster pack and its away

get in and give it some clutch muscle and the handbrake pops free so we set of and straight away what a beast smooth and quite a refined machine so evidently i boot it to see what the 12 valve can muster and straight away regret it as it boggs down and stutters like feck as i approach the a61 main roundabout ,,abit of clutch slipping and throttle feathering see's us across that old danger zone and we stutter and bogg our way to kwikfit whereby it somewhat clears up its act
brakes good and running smooth ish i feel confident of a mere rust fail sheet

course i'd not tried the wipers untill i got there and watch as the wiper arm runs across the screen sans wiper ,,,

anyhow the car cut out on the test and wouldnt restart as its dead bazzer and  cheap ass new fuel pump died simultaineously ,,so only way to get the beast home was to rob the facet one off the skoda and pikey fit it

despite abandoning the test the tester was a top guy who was loving the emergence of a dinasour like this and coincidently is a RR member haha
i concluded i had been too ambitious with the car lol

anyhow banal action pics

took this pic covertly because there was loads of general public around,,note the accidental oil and pez spillage from hand pumping the fuel pump

fitted up the facet,,earth jammed in the manifold thing mount and handily a live taken from a mysterious but available live

we then set off back noting that if the car stalled which i was fearing it might if the facet was maybe too much for the weird SU thing so plenty of left foot breaking and feathering going on to keep it going

we got home and after one cheeky sidewalls on the road understeer into the street it decided to cut out finaly

deceased chaps over glass's , it was said he was 97 when he stopped driving this and only did so because he broke his back and soon after passed on , he sounds like abit of a legend

tentatively we open the boot

this was viewed with suspicion as i had the thought of it having shit or a dead pet inside but alas the fellow found a alternative use for his handbag

WTF is going on with the wheel well,,spare and garage tool set housing ?

not bad i thought given it literally only ran badly for about 20mins after a 6month sit

worst bit of rot

i must remove these before a teenager etc kicks them off and only leaves the smashed carcase for me to refit before attending any car show (ahh actually thats someone else who did that)  either way they remove the need for stomach pumping as just looking at them does that for me

so a good weld clean and carb sort out should see it back to health and on the highway and to think 10 years ago i thought these were dire,,and perenialy going to stick around forever how times change

laterly we ask about it and the good fellow says its part of his late father in laws estate and after some anecdotal stories regarding the fellows car we leave a number and head out,,then literally 2 mins later he pops out and says it can be had for 150 to liquidate it into the probate WIN

so i book a test for a few hours ahead of picking it up so to be able to insure it and get it to run despite sitting 6 months

we do that but we juggle organising that with travelling about for her job, and her uncles that have rocked up to do wiring in our house but obviously i'm iching to see if it will even get to the test station lol

anyhow the time beckons and we set of back up with the 150quid,,a can of pez and some easy start,,abit of help from the booster pack and its away

get in and give it some clutch muscle and the handbrake pops free so we set of and straight away what a beast smooth and quite a refined machine so evidently i boot it to see what the 12 valve can muster and straight away regret it as it boggs down and stutters like feck as i approach the a61 main roundabout ,,abit of clutch slipping and throttle feathering see's us across that old danger zone and we stutter and bogg our way to kwikfit whereby it somewhat clears up its act
brakes good and running smooth ish i feel confident of a mere rust fail sheet

course i'd not tried the wipers untill i got there and watch as the wiper arm runs across the screen sans wiper ,,,

anyhow the car cut out on the test and wouldnt restart as its dead bazzer and  cheap ass new fuel pump died simultaineously ,,so only way to get the beast home was to rob the facet one off the skoda and pikey fit it

despite abandoning the test the tester was a top guy who was loving the emergence of a dinasour like this and coincidently is a RR member haha
i concluded i had been too ambitious with the car lol

anyhow banal action pics

took this pic covertly because there was loads of general public around,,note the accidental oil and pez spillage from hand pumping the fuel pump

fitted up the facet,,earth jammed in the manifold thing mount and handily a live taken from a mysterious but available live

we then set off back noting that if the car stalled which i was fearing it might if the facet was maybe too much for the weird SU thing so plenty of left foot breaking and feathering going on to keep it going

we got home and after one cheeky sidewalls on the road understeer into the street it decided to cut out finaly

inspection

sunroof works all good

deceased chaps over glass's , it was said he was 97 when he stopped driving this and only did so because he broke his back and soon after passed on , he sounds like abit of a legend

wor lass likes the car and not even ironically

tentatively we open the boot

this was viewed with suspicion as i had the thought of it having shit or a dead pet inside but alas the fellow found a alternative use for his handbag

WTF is going on with the wheel well,,spare and garage tool set housing ?

not bad i thought given it literally only ran badly for about 20mins after a 6month sit

worst bit of rot

i must remove these before a teenager etc kicks them off and only leaves the smashed carcase for me to refit before attending any car show (ahh actually thats someone else who did that)  either way they remove the need for stomach pumping as just looking at them does that for me

so a good weld clean and carb sort out should see it back to health and on the highway and to think 10 years ago i thought these were dire,,and perenialy going to stick around forever how times change

the oil drum has now become garden furniture in a sort of 'on the social' kind of fashion because its a faff to cut given it having structural rigidity enough to need slitting discs et al
so anyhow i cracked on with Kevin Bacons white escort van

more activity in the form of a topped up welder and moar gas

floor bit and inner/inner sill plopped in ,,really needed a double hinged hand for that tbh

also this bit is what differentiates a 90's car A pillar to a 70's version in terms of a 1.5mm thick extra section to add abit of crush resistance when the wheel is trying to fold up the passenger 'cell' in an offset crash which is helpfull hoever as i cut away the secondary inner sill i popped this lawnmower handle as a back stop and welded a new simpler inner sill over it

This i really didnt fancy doing as by this stage i'd become really slack and bored but powered on ahead without even bothering to blow over with the knot wheel to expunge the paint

closed it up like the sows ear purse it actually is ,,,next will be the outer sill well once its been flatted and painted up inside

Greetings all ive been a outside lurker on this very forum for some while so thought i might lower the tone and post things
i shall open posting with my garage services/farm hand spec escort van weldathon that i'm going to have a crack at despite no driveway, extremely old but liberal neighbours, a 1984 themed town council, and an extension that literally only just reachs the road and half of a 200 litre chemical drum

pics as always speak louder than 1 dimensional written text

The scene earlier, one victim of depreciation and a communist throwback, the old neighbour came out to see why activity had suddenly went up 5000% on the street and had a poke at the jump leads offering tea bags,,milk, sugar etc
main thing gleaned from the jump start though was the skoda actually has the net result of basically having no positive effect of the stricken battery  i'm unsure one how it can actually look after its own one tbh

Mould growth and pointless tat,,,,check

a typical 1970s AA book of the car would i assume caption this as excessive toe out

spring sagging on this side for no reason and dampers have less control of the beam as a battered sausage

initial investigations of the sill show my favourit go nowhere repair, rotten inner with a cover sill nicely blended in with window putty seems like its serious rot local to the sill/cill but excellent floor so saveable with some carefull tin bashing , also forward leaf spring hangers are beyond being considered a mounting anymore,,so some fabrication there too (the future mrs eyes glazed over when i mentioned that the back of the van must be unusualy heavy given the front NS wheel joining the OS one despite being quite far off the centerline jack wise )

old out sill chopped,,,and new material donor from work note my DSS garden condition

apologies in advance if this is too miserable a saga to be posted up but if the concensus is that its passably bearable i shall update as i trundle through the banal minutea of MOTting it!

thanks for the kind words i shall update as motivation drives progress so to speak
i do still have the triumph indeed!,,,its undergoing a mass of change so it looks and sounds less offensive to the general populace and has abit more shove from the loud pedal
