  1. 2.0 Zetec silver tops are getting pretty rare, and unless it is in the scrapyard it would be a shame to 'do a Mini' style engine rape on a working Mk1 Mondy, hardly see early ones now a days, black tops are more difficult to do as a DIY on the cheap conversion

The MX5 engine seems a lot of work for little gain

  2. Does anyone know if these companies like Autoglass and Auto Windscreens would tackle fitting an 'old' screen? Need a new screen fitting on my A55 Cambridge, it's one of the types that has a chrome insert in the rubber. When I had a new rubber fitted to the rear a couple of years ago, I tried several local independents and only one was interested in the job. He was a right grumpy old git and didn't manage to get the chrome insert fitted properly "pattern rubber mate".

They do, I was quoted £60 for it

  3. More Riva woes:

After spending quite a pretty penny on my Riva, i got it running 100% BUT

She now decides to randomly cut out, i have checked everything and can't seem to find the problem.

You could be driving along for hours, and no problem, or minutes and it will cut out - as if the ignition is turned off, as the car does not splutter or cough, just simply cuts out.

What do we think it could be guys & girls ?

I have tried / changed the following:

Ignition (i thought the contacts inside were failing, so changed the whole lot)

Main relay (The one behind the dash, again for reasons above)

All earth leads & fitted more

Condensor - just incase the "new" one was duff.

    Coil - As per condensor.

I really like this car, just don't wan't it to become a nightmare, nor do i want to go down the route of fitting a modern engine - Well not just yet anyway, as it takes the car "Out of action" for a wee few weeks.

Someone has mentioned carb icing / Fuel evaporation, but i don't think it is either, as simply backing out of drive made it cut-out once, but ran fine for the rest of the day....

Ignition barrel, or perhaps a dodgy wire from the starter to the switch or fuse box depending on how it is wired up, Cortinas are a nightmare for it in days gone bye

  4. Tools fall into several catagorys, I mainly use Britool, Taskmaster(old) and Smoos for my good stuff and Halfords for my 'in the van' tool kits, However all my Whitworth, imperial and AF stuff is Gedore, Elora, Bedford, Snap on and Britool...and I never have much in the way of problems with any of it, my 3/8 Britool ratchet is from the early 50's and only just starting to get a bit cranky

  5. Be advised, quality and ability vary greatly.....I've used a Snap-on 18v one and it is superb, I've tried some 24v ones that are shit, try and get one with at least 400Nm or they are a waste of time.

  6. OK, quick update, seems she can have a courtesy car for a few days until they decide the Rovers fate, have told them I want it back as I doubt it is much more than cosmetic damage, so in lieu of knowing whats happening I'm putting Granny_Bol's Fiesta back on the road next weekend, so I HOPE the panic is off for next week,

Plan B is to put the LDV Convoy I have just acquired on the road, but it has brakes that shake more than J-Lo ass  and often don't bother to work at all....

Plan C is to MOT the Cortina estate next weekend and use it, none of these are ideal as she 'needs' a modernish car as she is a social worker and there are standards that the council's expect from such workers

  10. The other half has gone off the road in the Rover75, it's almost certainly a write off  , Need to get a cheap car to keep her going as she travels 100 miles a day, I can get about £300 or so together, needs to be in the North of England or Scotland and be available this weekend. Ebay has nothing I would touch in the price zone....
