Deal done, keys exchanged. Have known this car for a while, owner has always been keen on the 164 since I got it and he has another though in poor condition (that he might break, paging @wuvvum)
Took a drive down not really expecting much, thinking that if anything I’d get to see one in the flesh at least. But I was pleasantly surprised. It’s in nice, useable nick, drives well (well for a 70 year old car)  and comes with a book full of spares. It’s not an Austin 7 but it’s the oldest car I’ve ever had, so it’ll be an experience, and it might open the doors to the prospect of something older again in the future

Like I predicted when starting this thread; it will be boring. I’m afraid I just have nothing to report other than that it has been faultless, all day. Also, I just remembered that on Monday it will celebrate 50 years since it’s first registration:

If I want to be picky, the fuel gauge stopped working an hour ago. A bit of a pain but I’ll forgive it that. Shortly beforehand I had brimmed the tank for the first time ever in my ownership so I’m wondering if that might be related. Still, no fret and I’ll look at it another time.

Torque converter was knocking its head off on the Wooley. No reverse or neutral the last few days; so this is how I’ve spent the day with my very patient ex-BMC engineer father:

And found this period photo in the meantime. Not much to go on but judging by the woman’s dress im guessing 60s? The AA badge is still in place too

As per news 24 I put the bumpers back on the front. They have a heavy coating of car wax to stop them rusting over again.

In doing this I used chrome bolts to replace the rear hex bolts someone used to remove the rear overriders. Likewise on the front too as I've done without them.

Also replaced the light switch with my new fangled tool I bought.

Old switch was buggered inside. I'll keep to repair with the next broken switch as these older switches have a nicer action.

Put some padding in for the battery to stop it sliding around. It's too small for the car but it works so not hurrying to replace it.

Finally Mrs SiC suggested I took it to the local shop as we need some Ice Cream for tea.
Plucked up some courage and set out.
The main road outside our estate is a 40mph limit. There is also a hill so people end up flying down far too fast. Nearly came a cropper when I went to pull out to have a modern Jag hairing along.

Anyway I got there okay and put 10litres of super in too.

Drove alright. A few issues with second gear being quite hard to select but that's probably more user error. The servo brakes bite really hard and fast - like modern over assisted brakes on many cars now. Feels pretty sprightly when accelerating. That might just be the low gearing though.

The only real issue is the throttle sticks at idle. So you pull up with it revving it's nuts off and you have to jab the pedal hard to get it back to a more sensible idle. I'll have a look at the linkage and lube it up a bit.

Oh and I really do hate driving without seatbelts.

That looks like a military tag, I have a share in a  Daimler Ferret and that has the same plate riveted to the rocker cover and same colour paint. Our history says the engine was rebuilt during service and the plate matches our history.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted a bmc 1100/1300. I even rang Derek Bayliss of the 1100 club when I was 15 to ask about buying one.  27 years later I’ve got one incoming- currently being loaded onto a polish registered  beavertail in central london….

In this next thrilling installment there is actual progress! Not a massive amount, but better than nothing. My selection of thrust washers arrived, and a mixture of brands. OEM...

    ...and not OEM.

The washers sit either end of the bronze 2nd/3rd gear bush, and limit the float to between 1 and 7 thou. Mine was at 10 with the original washers, so some assembling, measuring and reassembly later I'd got it so it was tight on a 1.5 thou feeler gauge (the thinnest I have). Happily that was with a 0.128" washer each side, so will be as central as possible. That'll do! So I could then loctite in the bush locking pin.

The bush slides over this like so:

This was just a trial fit to make sure the pin was below flush. It was, so the 2nd gear could be fitted after making sure the oilways were clear, and oiling it up.

    Same for 3rd gear.

With that done, the second thrust washer sits on too, all held together by the bastard snap ring. With a new one, the gap is next to nothing so I had to improvise to get it on.

And in place! Note the fan heater to stop my hands freezing to the shaft, ad it's been sub-zero all day here.

A quick check of the float again, and I could flip the mainshaft over and assemble the other, easier side.

New synchro rings going in, followed by first gear. It should be ready to go back into the gearbox, but I've got a minor concern about the play on first gear. Can't find a spec in Haynes, so will have to research elsewhere.
There was quite a bit of wear in the linkage for the yellow knob (4wd high) so for few pence of a new bush, I thought I'd pop one of those in as well.

I'm not very good at updating this thread! But removal of the steering rack and replacing the internal bush was one of the last big jobs. Disassembled new internal poly bush, fresh ep 90 and some new gaiters.
Once the rack was refitted I set the tracking.
Refitted the final interior bits, reassembled the doors with new rubber seals.
And today for the first time in months the van escaped the workshop. Gave it a good 10 mile run, got a few thumbs up (and a few looks of horror!) Only a few failures one of which being the brake light switch which has completely fallen apart .

It drives really well and thanks to the diff ratio it gets up to speed pretty quickly! I've got various niggling jobs to finish but I can officially say the van is back on the road!

That's my old car, I bought it in 2010 and sold it last year. I bought it so my mum could get around, then it stood a few years. I welded it all up and did loads to it then my mum passed away and didn't have it in me to finish it. Sold it for 750 with no mot. Young lad bought, put an mot on it then flogged it, been hovering around between buyers ever since. It really is a cracking car and that mileage is genuine. I put two brand new mitsubishi wings on it. I hope it finds a good home. My mum drove it all over the place.. deserves to survive as super rare now..
