In, what I can only consider, a moment of madness, I picked up this over the weekend....

Its a W126 300SE, so straight six rather than V8, although it seems to go well enough. It seems solid structurally, with just a tiny bit of bubbling on the leading edge of the front wings. The previous owner made the car out to be much worse that it actually is. Mechanically it's going to need a water pump, which was supplied, as it has a very slight weep. It's done 127k which seems to be backed up by the MOT history.
It has previously been a total loss, but has passed a VIC, so assume it was a while ago. Only evidence of damage is the front OS corner, as the bumper and trim beneath the headlight is a tad mangled.
Exterior has many many car park dings, which is flagging it, to me anyway, as a probable ex London car. The bonnet has bloom in the paint.
    Panel gaps are all good.
The interior is cloth, which I prefer, and in reasonably good shape, the rear is especially clean. There are a few bits of trim that need replacing. It's missing the gunsite, so a chineseium ebay special has been ordered.
It drives pretty well, in a floaty yacht like fashion. The last 'big car' I had was a Jag XJ8, and I didn't expect this to be as comfortable or planted as that. I wasn't wrong.
    Things that don't:
Rear Windows, They look like they probably haven't been used in a very long time, so will probably need 'unsticking'.
Central Locking, This has the vacuum powered system, but also what is probably defuct aftermarket 'Toad' alarm. This needs investigating as it's a reach to the passenger door.

Will I keep it? unsure. But it's been pressed into daily duties to see if I can cope with the fuel consumption, and to see if it fails to proceed.

In for an oil and filter. .

Tame garage charged me £19.20 to do it. Bosch filter was £5.40. The free excess order of Oil from Amazon covered the rest. Result!

No sign of the new heater fan yet. Brrrr!

The Big has decided to shit its heater blower, this week of all weeks. It was a little noisy, but is now blowing fuses as it tries to seize up.
I've contacted a few electrical motor repair places, but most only deal with big commercial stuff. So looks like a replacement is the only option.
Second hand stuff is around the £100.00 mark, and most comes from Germany/USA/Lithuania. However Autodoc 'new' ones were £185.00 - until yesterday, where they had them for £100.00

I've ordered one, it's not too bad to fit, as it's an under-dash unit. But it'll probably arrive in the spring...

It certainly seems to get a lot of attention on the morning commute. Had a cyclist give me the thumbs up as he passed me in traffic this morning, followed by an old guy come up to the car whilst I was waiting to turn right at a junction, he was waffling on to me about a W116 280S he had years ago.
It's certainly a '10 Footer' but in the morning rain, and having had it washed on the weekend, it does pass as pretty smart.

In the last week I've driven literally from one end of England to the other, and back a again. 708miles, withough any murmer of stalling KE-Jetronic calamity.

I actually think that The Big just does not like spending its days idlely commuting. A good hot, non stop fast cross country run, which I assume has dried out all the 70's electronics, seems to have worked wonders.

I guess that's what these were built for.

I managed to make some good progress on my current 1:24 project:

For something that is quite toylike, sitting on a chassis shared with another van and intended to be motorized, the basics are all there and it certainly looks like a Hiace.
Some final detailing and tidying required and I should finish this one off next weekend.

Until you realize that it will outlive any LR product, not use much more fuel, offer more space, similar conveniences and significantly lower cost of ownership due to its simple and robust nature. This is one of those vehicles that can live half a century if you service the gearbox once every 100k miles while keeping the rust at bay. The only downside I see is a cheap looking dashboard.

Garage called, they've fitted all the parts, but when torqueing up the thermostat housing he heard a creak, and it had cracked. Thankfully he's sourced a replacement (new) one for £16.00.
The final bill for sorting it all came to £258.00 which I'm happy with. They had to rebook the alignment as the chap who does it contracted Covid.

    Fuck me, the MG6.

A car that, when Kelsey ran it as a company vehicle, needed a new gearbox and clutch in 547 miles, owing to a ricked neutral safety switch.

A car whose owners' manual spoke of 'KET FEATURES'.

A car which, when it broke down, had MG Assist tell the driver (me) that it 'didn't come out at weekends' and, after taking the VRM, thought the car was 'a Maestro'.

We'll get into the international persona non grata campaign that AROnline Facebook bestowed upon me later, because they were following MG Motor UK like puppies at that point and refused to concede any criticism of said firm.

You see, I didn't like Kelsey's MG6, because it didn't work. Said car was later rebuilt after it twatted into the armco on the M25.
