Today's £1 Lesney. Broken windows are it's main fault. Restore or sell at an instant loss. We'll see!

Model Supplies just started doing the window unit this year. Although, typically I have just put in an order dammit.

Matiz is total shite, dent man fixed mine with his fingers - wouldn't fancy it in a crash. Hateful to drive, engine is gutless, gear change is not worthy of the name.

+1 for the C1/Aygo/107 option - just make sure it has had the clutch change/upgrade. Cheapest I can find is about £1.5k though.

Another slightly cheaper option is the Justy from about the same time, uses same engine from the Aygo and tends to be about £~800 less.

Pure marketing - air quality is getting better, has been for decades.

The air quality deaths figures are mostly produced from "modelling". Models make a lot of assumptions and figures or predictions from them should be taken with a barrel of salt. There's a long read by someone who went deeply into those claims a while ago - http://euanmearns.com/mortality-from-diesel-car-pollution-in-the-uk/

At the same time air quality is improving (this is from the US but the same standards mostly apply here too
https://www.epa.gov/air-trends/air-quality-national-summary),and fuel consumption is falling anyway.

All of that tapped if this move can improve it more then its a good thing.

I can't see the infrastructure being ready in time or us having enough power available for it. Remember as well as vehicles we are committed to cutting C02 massively in the next few decades, including the need to remove gas from household heating - which means more leccy needed to do that and we don't have enough now.

Pile on top of that no realistic cheap grid level storage and intermittent sources and its a complicated knot for anyone to solve. The other announcement on "Smart Energy" this week is uk.gov's best "guess" at how it could work, and its unimpressive.

Sorry I've skipped a lot of posts so this might have been said but what's the point of banning petrol and diesel?

No doubt climate change is a thing it is proven but long term they can only predict what might happen no one can say for sure what will.

Air quality is bad*. Thousands of deaths are attributed to it each year, why? How do they get these figures? What disease and conditions does if cause or effect? And is air quality solely to blame?

What about other countries like China and India that have no restrictions of their massive industries and pollute both air and water to a degree that makes anything we do completely insignificant? To quote Tesco "every little helps" and it does but when the little is being over ridden by the many and is of no actual benefit to those being made to change what's the point?

We have one planet, we have the time to save it unfortunately people are greedy, tribal and stupid so it's not looking that good really.

Passat of boredom - trip from Embra to Oxford and back. I love it goes this far on a tank, just very slowly.
1.6 TDI unbroken by VW "fix" and will remain so.

EDIT this is just after fillup before I reset it etc. Actual MPG was 1-2 less. I tend to stick to 70-75 where possible but got bored on the way back and the cruise went up to ~85-ish for the M74 bits otherwise maybe a 1000 mile tank.

Saw a few of these in the US, along with a load of Outbacks - a lot of them badged as 3.0 and 3.6 models. It did prompt an Autotrader UK search whilst over there.

We stayed near Point Richmond right next to a car park full to the brim with new, unregistered Subarus fresh off the ship.

The Escort "6th Generation" as Wikipedia calls it was in the showrooms alongside the Mk1 Focus.

In 1998 I had a Ford salesman (I had a company Mondeo at the time in for fixing, again) try and convince me that this "strategy" as correct as "conservative" buyers would go for the Escort and others for the Focus.

Unfortunately even if this "strategy" was correct (it isn't) said Escort was a dull 1.6 in turd brown with an official Ford bodykit which made any later Barry look like an artistic genius.

I have a slightly deviant liking for 70s crap updated for the 80s - e.g. Ambassador instead of a Princess, Allegro 3, Cortina '80, a plastic Bumpered / Wheel covered CX over a chrome one.

A 2200 Auto from about 85 in white would be good. An 86 CX25 DTR Turbo Safari in white would be gooder.

Examples: this looks like a little peach and is probably about right pricewise.

Well written ad, has service history, minimal modifications (wheels and exhaust)

This meanwhile I would avoid: many mods, big turbo intercooler remap etc, £3000 allegedly spent on modifying yet £0 spent on treating the pictured rust bleb and bumper scrapes.

Most of my knowledge is on the imports but much of it will apply to UK cars.

The biggest problems are crash damage and rust. Engines are pretty hardy but should have had oil changes regularly, some say every 3000 miles.

Check that there is no mixing of oil and coolant as head gaskets have been known to go.

The wagons have a smaller turbo than the saloons (TD04 vs TD05) so make less power as standard, 220bhp whereas the saloons started with 240 and ended with 260.

STIs have a quoted 270ish but possibly more as this is from the time when Jap manufacturers had a gentlemans agreement not to exceed this.

Personally I prefer the looks of the wagon and hopefully being lower power they're less likely to have been remapped to death and ragged.

Ultimately if you're shopping at the bottom of the market you just have to accept that the cars you're looking at have probably had a hard life and buy on what you see. Look in the engine bay and boot area for crash damage, check the arches, sills and floors underneath for rust - depending what part of Japan they're from some imports weren't undersealed from new and if the importer or first owner didn't do it they can be truly hanging.

STI and STI RA are probably the most desirable of the non-special editions, but I would definitely recommend getting the best one you can rather than getting hung up on a particular model.

Don't be tempted to go for a non-turbo as they're much, much slower and no better on fuel.

If you get one 96 or older, Footman James will cover them as a classic v.cheaply - I paid £140 last year but that's gone up since they had to buy me a new one.

It's difficult to imagine what a DS must have looked to 1950s eyes, let alone the roadholding, braking and comfort. Phil Llewellyn writing in CAR or one of its offspring came closest to capturing the near-unbelievability, describing the appearance of an early DS approaching at speed on a long A-road straight, from the back seat of his Dad's ancient British crock.

The British took the suspension as intended for comfort, but the French engineered it for maximum grip (so speed) over a variety of surfaces, comfort was the by-product. There was an astonishing amount of undisguised hatred for the marque in the English garage trade, probably partly because many struggled to understand how it worked, many more refused to admit the French could come up with something so amazing, others dismissed them because they weren't boy-racer cars offering cheap thrills, more the machine capable of covering vast distances at high speed.
