Fond memories triggered by this thread
GBJ 604J (no records of it on DVLA so clearly long since dead)  was a Zephyr V4 in a lovely fetting shade of dark metallic brown was purchased new by father BC when I was only just old enough to ride up front - that bonnet and the target sights to line up victims was fantastic to me. Not quick but a lovely ride and it was huge!!!!
It was however only in the family for a short while as it was the unluckiest car in the world
Accident Number 1 - Parked at the bottom of the corn exchange car park in Ipswich a USAF serviceman failed to engage the handbrake properly in a big old yank tank - it rolled fairly slowly down the hill before stopping against the Zephyr but not before it had damaged all of the Passenger side - rear wing, both doors and front wing.
It was fully repaired (whole passenger side of the car resprayed) but the metallic colour match wasn't perfect so the repair shop had mixed up enough to do the whole car if Father BC wasn't happy (Apparently these "new-fangled metallic colours" were a bugger to match)  - he wasn't but decided to delay getting it done because he was fed up with the loan car (Austin 1300)
Accident Number 2 - Waiting to turn left at a set of lights a lorry going straight on made an error of judgement about nearside clearance and ran his trailer down the drivers side. He was eventually stopped  by plod near Colchester he was oblivious to the accident apparently but the brown smeared paint stripes on his trailer were a bit of a giveaway.
It was fully repaired (whole drivers side of the car resprayed) and now both sides matched and looked good the repair shop had enough left to do bonnet, roof and boot lid at a later date - Father BC decided this car was quite unlucky and he was sure something else would happen so the body shop gave him the rest of the paint
Accident number 3 - Driving along a main road a ball bounced in front of the car - Father BC braked hard and a teenager rolled over the bonnet and up over the roof - no broken bones but the bonnet and roof weren't in the best shape
Replacement Bonnet and a bit of filler went in the roof and all that remained of the paint went on that - the boot lid at this point was now the only thing not replace or painted.
The car got sold - Actually purchased by a private buyer who chipped Father BC for a few quid because of the accident damage on the boot as it was clearly a poor colour match to the rest of the car Father BC said that was the trouble with "new-fangled metallic colours"

I'll take this opportunity to briefly hijack this thread and post a picture of my parent's old navy blue Carlton CDi auto. D registration, so like @sutty2006 's  it was one of the last of these boxy Carltons to roll of the Opel Russelheim (spl??) factory floor before the new Omega A based model. I got to drive it a few times when I passed my driving test.  Not the nicest looking Carlton at the time but I loved that car.

Spoiler alert... turbo replacement was a success.😁

Been pootling about since Monday but today managed 50 miles into work without incident. Even the cruise worked and the new thermostat means the heaters toasty.
Slight smell of piss, but I guess it was a taxi - the stories those rear seats could tell....

Nearly back together. Took off what I call the cleanside duct as I could see a split on the seam. Had this stupid ginormous resonator box on it and could not for the life of me get the bustard duct back into place. So I chopped off the box and epoxied a bit of plastic over the hole.

Naturally it glided back into place after it's trim job.
    Marigolds for the win.
Just the bottom arm bolt to manipulate back in and the wheels and I can try for a start!

Had it 7 years before ABS/TCS system went pear shaped so it's gone to be a donor engine and running gear for a much older car

I attempted to sign up for an Autoshite forum account a couple of weeks ago, and got as far as being notified that an administrator was due to activate it. That hasn't happened yet. I've reported the issue to them via the 'contact us' function, but no response to that either. Account name, as set up, is 'Missy Charm', same as here. Does anyone here use Autoshite and in a position to assist? Bit stuck otherwise!"
    TIA

I'm 5 ft 13 and I agree - I find it really hard to get comfortable on smaller bikes (regardless of capacity) in fact modern sports bikes are actually really unpleasant to ride hence why I stick with bigger old stuff!!! (Although my GPz600r is actually a little bit small for me - I probably should sell it really - but I never get round to it)

I'm going to assume you already have good gear - if you haven't lower your budget for a bike to allow for some decent gear
I spent more on my leathers, helmet and boots than I did on the motorcycle I was riding at the time however 35 years later I still have the same leathers - the helmet is long gone having saved my life and the boots whilst I still have them I really should throw them away as I replaced them 5 years ago
Regarding purchase bear in mine going for something from the 80's will still pack a punch but can be insured a lot cheaper than modern stuff for someone who doesn't have a lot of non claims
    My current Fleet
    85 GPz600R, 86 GPz1000 RX, 87 RG250 Gamma (350 YPVS heart) and 98 BMW K1200 RS
The only modern bike that really appeals to me is a Triumph Speed Triple but I'd need to get rid of the current ones to afford a decent one and I'm not sure I want to do that

Actually reverse process from memory - seal was deflated with vacuum to allow you to slide it in the tracks - the shhhh you hear when closing the lever was the vacuum being released and allowing the seal to re-inflate
