  1. A couple of delusional sellers on eBay tonight.

  2. I don't visit this site too often, but it's interesting to see the progress of my old Carlton that I bought in 2003 and sold to Mr Sutty this year. Very pleased that this wonderful old car is finally getting the attention she deserves. Really nice car to drive, much quicker and smoother than the carbed Mk1 2000 that I had before. A few points; When I was reading through this thread I read that the stat cover had a crack and read further on that Mr S was desperately seeking a replacement. I would have contacted him to say there is a new one ion the boot, but too late as I see he already bought one before discovering the spare I supplied. Re. auto box. Can't say how well the box has fared after approx 14 years of being in storage, but when I was driving her, the gearbox worked faultlessly. I don't know how autos respond to long periods of inactivity. That's my 10mm spanner you found under the bonnet - and I want it back!!! Seriously that spanner may have been lost under the bonnet since she was new. Reason I say this is because it looks very old and rusty (not the car!). Twenty years ago I was between jobs and did a bit of temp work at Portbury Docks where the Corsas and Tigras were landed and stored from Spain. We were all issued with similar 10mm spanners to disconnect the batteries while the cars were in storage. These spanners got dropped and lost regularly and it was quicker to get another than delve into the engine bay to look for it. So it may be from when the car was stored before sale when it came into UK from Germany. The fan motor seems a bit of a pain. It used to work better on faster speeds, but did squeal a bit when running slower. Good luck with the project, Mr S. I'lll be watching with interest and drop in from time to time to see how things are going. She's thrown up a few surprises, but I suppose that's old cars for you.

  4. Also - life lesson time. Don’t get wasted and go on eBay. I did at the weekend and did a drunk e bay purchase. It’s from what looks like a bombsite, the car has previously been written off and a dog has attacked the interior. So clearly irresistible. Most/ almost all it’s value was the cat, which it comes with. Still it was so so cheap and mot’d till June and my man included delivery. It’s being dropped on Thursday. I’m unsure if the dog eating the interior or the parking damage to both rear quarters was what wrote it off. Scotch whisky has a lot to answer for.

    The grumpy thread

There's plenty of places to eat out and be guaranteed a flipping lovely meal and a good pint, but any chain place puts a pretty low cap on how good a meal can be (but seemingly not how bad it can be) A few pubs I visit often and the food is always very very good - all fresh, locally sourced meat (One place you can see out of the window to the field where your steak came from) and it's not really much more expensive than eating at beefeater - A sirloin steak would be £18/20, a big burger £14, £12 for a pie etc. Always a couple of good local beers on cask and they are al busy enough to sell it through before it goes dead. These are long running successful businesses with staff that have been there for years. It's possible to run a decent pub and keep the customers and staff happy if all the profits aren't syphoned off by pricks at a head office somewhere.

From first glance, this 240 looks like a bargain at £995, but probably one of the most interesting MOT histories I've ever seen https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202211282096603?advertising-location=at_cars&price-to=1000&postcode=IP14 2DZ&sort=datedesc&page=1&year-to=2000&include-delivery-option=on

  17. Tonight I finished off the 4x4 selector box, ready for fitting to the transfer box. The dog on the left links the front and rear output shafts to select 4wd. The shaft which operates this is spring-loaded, so that when a pin is lifted (pushing the yellow lever down), 4wd in normal high ratio is engaged. The upper shaft is linked to the high/low gear selector in the transfer box, so that whenever low ratio is selected, 4wd is also engaged. All this selection mechanism is lubricated by an oil slinger, so no appreciable wear. The 4wd selector box was slid onto the front of the transfer box, and the low ratio 4wd selector shaft slid into the selector fork. I replaced the seal at the end of this shaft, and also the small O ring on the pin which allows high ratio 4wd to be engaged. There is a little bit of rusting on the ends of the shafts, but I've smoothed this off and greased them. Finally, the dust cover was fitted over the ends of the shaft.

  20. "2007 Ford Fiesta tenth" Erm no, nice try, but it's a 2004 Ford Focus... And the best bit- "Low cigarette lighter consumption insurance" What's that even supposed to mean 🤣 Do you just mash random words and phrases together when selling on Facebook these days 🤣 Edit - I actually missed the last line - "I am waiting for you in private" Sounds ominous 🤣

Cold, it shifts well. I'm going to pull the governor and check it's not full of dirt or has a burr or anything that would stop it moving properly when hot.

  27. Ouch! So for this one seems fine. I’ve mainly had k11 micras, p11 primeras and obv the Cedric and this lumbering beast. So far they’ve all worked faultlessly. I was especially impressed with the k11s as I used to cane those to death, but they never went wrong. Clearly having written this something mechanical will now implode 😂

  35. What about Auris 1.6 petrol? I don't reckon ours would privately be worth much more than £3k so probably £4-5k at a dealer, fairly simple tech, just works and is actually quite decent to drive. On nice A-road cruisng with a bit of town work I'm getting 44mpg out of ours at present. Anyway, my own news update: 1. Yaris went straight through its MoT. Master SL's first experience of it, with a car that's older than he is. It's the equivalent of me having had something from 1969 when I started driving in 1987, and it passing with no work. 2. Avensis happily made it to Loughborough. 3. Taking LS400 in for MoT tomorrow evening. It needs fuel, got a couple of cans filled-up in readiness as one doesn't get it very far....

    Bus Shite

I posted this recovery truck in the truck shite thread but the bus it's towing is just as interesting. Behind the cherished reg hides the first production Plaxton President, the genesis of the low-floor double-decker. It first appeared in London as a DAF demonstrator in 1998 carrying S201 JUA plates but doesn't seem to have been licensed as such and only ran on trade plates. That reg was then issued to the first Alexander ALX400-bodied example and this one finally entered service in late 1999 with Arriva as their DLP1 (V601 LGC). It was open-topped for the London sightseeing tour in 2006, then sold ten years later to Bathroom Takeaway, who used it as a hospitality vehicle for shows. They donated it to Buses4Homeless, who intended to convert it into a 'health and wellbeing bus' to be operational on a site in London by the summer of 2019, but don't seem to have done anything with it. No idea where it had come from or was going.
