Xantias have a tendency to bite me on the arse, but thought I'd try changing the accumulator. Had one in stock m8, together with a sphere removal tool and some LHM+. Never throw stuff away... Pump ticking is now less frantic, so that'll do.

This side is a bit better (honest) but it still all needs chopping out and replacing. The leaf springs front mount isn't too bad but has been welded on (many years ago) at very jaunty angle so can't stay either. The majority of the welded repairs to the floor and sill area have been done very well but it has just rotted out again.I think a lot of the rot has been caused by poor corrosion protection of the fresh metal and water ingress via leaky door and window seals. I have in stock a rear spring hanger,sill/floor panels, lower quarter panel, centre cross member repair section and a hinge pillar panel (dubious quality) but i still need another £80 worth of pressed tin to complete the jig-saw. As I went front to back last time I thought I would go back to front this time and start by replacing the spring hanger box section. An old Toyota Hiace scissor jack is a great tool for pushing the leaf spring out of the way and helping to align it when the shackle needed to be fitted again. This was more involved than the offside one as the boot floor which is sandwiched between the spring hanger and the inner wings box section had turned to horrible brown rust flakes so had to be cut out and replaced before I could fit the new hanger. It all went in ok,i had drilled 8mm holes into the hanger so i could plug weld it to the floor/inner wing and then seam/tack weld everywhere else. It's going to need a few high welds dressing back as I had the welder turned up to 11 when it really didn't need to be. Also on this side the boot floor above the axle bump stop plate will need to remade too and obviously the boxing in of the inner wing to back panel will need completing.

  4. Well this sold the day after the ad was listed for close to the asking. I’ve got to give a massive thanks to @panhard65 for saving my bacon with that old Bentley. He sussed out the things needing attention, advised against putting much money into it, did the ad and handled the sale. What a brilliant guy.

  7. Worn out. The lower arm on the nearside had a failed bush. A common thing and arms are fairly cheap at work. But im working to a budget here so i just rebushed the arms. The ball joints and front bush seemed fine. I went with 12 quid on 2 new febi units, the 36 quid saving over replacing both arms almost covers the cost for 1 shock and its top mount.

  8. Wow, that’s another six months without the R19 having done anything. It keeps getting covered in pine needles, therefore every so often I brush them off and very occasionally I’ll wipe all the grime off the windows. Today was different, I did both of those things, then (after a quick charge in the garage) chucked the battery on and ran the engine for a bit. This required directing a bit of lubrication at the choke cable, which had become rather stiff and is also missing its knob making its shaft difficult to pull out (fnarr). Then ran it round the block to make sure the brakes aren’t seizing on or whatever. One of my friends has made the mistake of asking if I had an old banger in stock that he can use while on holiday here next month, so it looks like the n-n-n-n-19 is getting pressed back into service soon! I still haven’t done owt about the play in the steering rack or the non functioning indicators, hopefully the latter is something simple like a busted relay.

For the £400 I suspect almost anyone would say, fine, ditch the undertray. Or cable tie it back on (which is easier in the long run to deal with). A phonecall would have sorted all of this out. £400 for an undertray and £160 for a shock isn't incompetence unfortunately, it's blatant profiteering out of people that don't have mechanical knowledge.

I genuinely don't think they do this stuff out of malice, I think the "system" just ends up this way. The guy doing the work is given set times for jobs so if he spends half an hour extra trying to sort the undertray out, it comes out of his own pocket and he'd have to jump through hoops to try an get paid for it, so the procedures just mean they order a new undertray. Doesn't make the shafting any better, but I always subscribe to the "do not immediately attribute to malice what could otherwise be attributed to incompetence"

  13. It shouldn't be the customer who has to pay up for the incompetence. If you sent your car for a service and the apprentice filled the sump with antifreeze you wouldn't expect to pay for the resultant replacement engine they had to fit...

  16. Said it before on here, but whoever comes up with the trim levels at Vauxhall is a sick fucker always naming them in the most ironic ways possible. EXCITE- Always the dullest version in the worst trim LIFE- That's how long a sentence it'll give you, nobody will buy it off you with fuck all on it. ENERGY- Similar to excite, lowest power models can't get out their own way. Exclusiv- they reinforced the point of what was excluded by even making the e at the end of exclusive an optional extra. Design- Has none, usually something close to a base model with part vinyl seats or something. Comfort- Just LOL.

  17. Ugh. The day did not go well. While I was still hunting for somewhere to film the initial walkaround, the engine started missing badly and I was limping along at 20mph. Then not even that. Had to pull over on the side of a 60mph road and slap my hand down on the top of the carb to try and clear a blockage. Then it conked out again where I filmed the intro... Could not get it to start, but managed to wriggle the fuel feed pipe from the pump so I could use it to effectively prime the carburettor by cranking the engine a little. By this time, typically, it had stopped raining and the screenwash proved to be broken... But mostly, I ran out of time. I had to film the Panhard, then the AU Ute, then had to load up the Berlingo and hot-foot it 300-miles back to Wales. It was a very long day! I was gutted, because Panhard wipers are just so hypnotic. I did record a TikTok, because I'm cool and down with da kids.

Really? If they find corroded fixings or some other issue that means the job takes longer, they just charge per hour labour to do the job. In the event of corroded fixings on an undertray (which is a shit design in the first place.. they should be able to last longer than 5 years) even if the mechanic had to grind them off and then use new fixings with penny washers, that might be another 1/2hr labour and a few quid for fixings. This is a classic case of a Main Stealer living up to the stereotype.

No I'm saying blame the shit system, not the mechanic. If he spent the extra half an hour on every undertray, he'd be skint or sacked in a few weeks. The system makes it impossible for him to do a proper, honest job

  29. This morning, I gave the rear brakes a service and ground the lips off of the discs, finishing up with a quick pass with the flap wheel to remove any rust from where it has been stood. The glove box handle has been repaired with araldite as I wasn't about to pay over a hundred quid for a second hand one, or a monkey for a new one. The interior looks far better but will get another pass with the wetvac... Its also had a new aerial, new pedal rubber and a plan is in place for the floor.

  30. Shove in the OM605 as mentioned earlier, then you can purchase bits from "superturbodiesel" and make it do this: https://bangshift.com/general-news/videos/6-05-the-mercedes-benz-om605-diesel-yeah-they-can-hustle/ Childish? Yes. Will it piss off your neighbour even more? Yes. Hilliarious? All day long.

There's a nice bakery near our new unit. Real good gear - Focaccia bread, Croissants, Cinnamon rolls, them pecan plait things, all that bollocks but incredibly nice. Last week I bought £12 worth of fancy stuff, ate half a cinnamon roll and brought it all home, left the bag on the kitchen side and went in the shower. Dog ate the fucking lot. FFS Friday after work I popped to the new unit to have a clean up etc, and the bakery was still open (they seem to be going 6am-9pm!) so I bought another bag of lovely stuff. Left it on the kitchen side. Went in the shower this morning. Yup. It's all in the dog again. FFS

  46. Sorry, but on what do you base the whole Lion hate? I’ve bought four of them over the last five years, all working perfectly still. I would rather spend £45 on something that’ll last five years, than £120 on something that’ll last seven. The law of diminishing return applies on what is, after all, a consumable.

  47. On the leaking oil bolt, as the thread is obviously damaged (hence it will not tighten) the problem is it is just spinning. You will need to apply some pressure outwards whilst rotating the bolt anti clockwise. If there is a gap at all between block and bolt head, a very thin screwdriver can be used whilst turning the bolt with a socket. If there is no gap, a small pair of vice grips on the bolt head at 90 degrees to the block, then turn and pull at the same time. This may take several attempts as the vice grips will keep slipping off. For the diesel leak, as said, a copper washer should work.
