  1. Mrs Juular has been busy behind the scenes sorting this out. I keep encouraging her to sign up here and update her own progress, but for the moment I'll add this. I've done nothing on this but occasionally offer guidance, or stand and drink tea and watch. She's done all this herself which is pretty cool. She rebuilt the slave cylinder using an uprated seal kit, as the usual kits are known for not lasting very long. With this done, the extra pressure in the pipe highlighted that both the nylon pipe and the master cylinder were leaking. The MC was leaking at the point the union went in, as it had previously been cross-threaded. A new clutch hose and MC were procured, fitted, and the system bled. The clutch pedal now felt right and heavy, and the slave could be heard working the pressure plate. Success! Almost.. The clutch plate itself was stuck to the flywheel, as many on here had predicted. This was pretty easy to solve by lifting the rear of the car, starting it in gear, and then revving it up and pressing the clutch pedal then the brake. A couple of goes freed this off with a loud pop. At this point, the car was driveable. It was swiftly insured (£80!) and taxed (£0!) and driven back to shite central carefully, with me following. It made it. Initial thoughts are that the steering seriously needs looked at, as there's about a quarter turn of play above 30mph which is a bit clench inducing to say the least. It's also getting a small overhaul of the suspension and new brake and fuel lines. A new interior is going in, a passenger door mirror, and a small tickle with the lightning stick around the front chassis rails. That's all it really needs. The engine sounds absolutely epic and runs beautifully, with only a slight whine off the diff that will be stubbornly ignored.

  2. Rot. Braced up. Taking out the floor was a real highlight. More quality repairs removed. Make shit. Copying the outriggers before chopping those off as well. Weldy weldington McWeld. Churning through the wire here. Grinding, then priming. This marks the point where the A pillars and everything forward of them is now complete. Next up - floors and inner sills.

  3. After reading the Escort Base model thread I thought I'd share my Escort 1.1 Popular that I have owned for nearly 10 years now. Its proper chod spec and I love it!! I always wanted one of these. When I was a kid my dad had a Sunburst Red Base Model 1.3 (x reg) until about 1998 followed by a mk4 1.4 GL. I always assumed I'd own a Red 3 door Escort mk3 when I passed my test but, that was 2005. My folks helped me with my first shit box which was a £900 Saxo and they wouldnt help to buy an Escort as they thought the ones they had were shite. I was stuck for a while until I was making my own money. Saxo died one Friday and I was looking for a mk3 in Red in a hurry. Didnt happen but I landed a mk5 3 door in Red for work on Monday (2008). I also test drove a Capri 1.6 but we'll come back to that later. During owning this I went to view a mk3 (sunburst red 1.3) that a scrap yard in Manchester had put to one side. Went along with £300 which was what it wasnt selling for on ebay. Fell in love, was told to go home and bid. When I got home they'd taken it down and I was gutted! Even drove back and pleaded with them to sell it me. The bosses son wanted it apparently. Anyway... had the mk5 for years, followed by a Focus when that died, then I was in a position where I was about to make some decent money as a touring musician which meant I could own a second car. Although I was always looking for one of these (still do to this day) one hadnt popped up in Red for 3 years and during the rehearsals for said tour a C reg 3 door 1.1 in Red popped up for sale on ebay. It seemed like it was meant to be so I went down to Peterborough and had a look/test drive. I loved every minute of it and thought it was hilarious at the same time. The steering wheel was so thin, the gear stick really long, the seating position was less sporty than my old mk5. I had to have it. The seller said you've checked it over havent you and happy with it a few times... alarm bells should have rang but it looked fine and solid. Put my fingers under the arch and they seemed solid (should have looked harder as you'll see). Anyway I bought it with my heart and not my head. Enjoyed the summer of 2013 with the medium wave radio cranked and the single centre speaker working its bollocks off then it lived in my Dads garage in the winter. Apologies for the Photobucket watermark on these early pics. As stereo upgrade from medium wave to Cassette medium wave. The following year as I remember it went for an MOT and they poked the little hole I'd found at the bottom of the driver sill, all the way around. Gutted!! This is the time I should have put it back on ebay, especially as on a now defunct Escort forum a guy couldnt sell a Base model 1.6 3 door in terracotta for £600. After a while I found some guys in Stoke-on-Trent who could restore it for me for a reasonable price so in it went... as you can see they found more rot than initially thought. All done! with some new wheels off a Capri, probably killing off all the wheel bearings. This is probably 1/3 of story. Its 2014 at this point. My girlfriend had moved to Glasgow for a new job so I was occasionally using it to go up there (Still had my Focus Estate too). Mainly I used it to listen to the Smiths and Tom petty cassettes round Manchester when back from touring with various bands. At some point it was kicked out of my Dads garage when he bought a Spitfire 1500 in early 2017 and then I took it to London with my later that year when I moved. I'll continue this later on when I have more time. As a long time lurker on here I thought I should maybe share my own tails of automotive woe with you... we havent even got to the Capri yet.

  4. After a lot of research, I found out that Unimog used a version of this engine until the 80s. And the lift pump they used had 2 bolt holes like mine has. This pump is Bosch Fp / K 22 M3/8 and it has some differences but I think it can be used as I can just change the fittings, I hope. So after a bit of searching I found a diesel specialist in Germany who sells these new at a not too bad price so I bought one. So now I just have to hope that this is the right pump as there are few pictures and that I can get it working on my car.

  8. Worked on the Mercedes all day today and have learned and found out a lot, possible there will be several posts to cover everything. Started by loosening what I think is the bleed screw on the diesel filter. And when I did, I had my ear close and could clearly hear a lot of air coming out. Then I took off the hose from the fuel pipe to the lift pump and then the return hose from the filter to the pipe and both were completely empty without diesel so things are not as they should be. And the hose to the lift pump is very bad. The next thing was to check the hoses at the fuel tank and they don't look too bad, but I change them anyway to be sure. But to change those involved emptying the tank. When the tank was empty and I had to change the hoses, I blew through the fuel pipes which I'm glad I did as this came out of the main pipe, the return wasn't that bad. The next thing was to look at the lift pump. And there I got a bad surprise, this seems to have leaked diesel into the engine and that would explain the high oil level and the fact that the oil level does not drop despite a heavy oil leak. It has also leaked a lot of diesel on the outside. And when disassembling the pump, I got another sad surprise, there are differences between this pump and the ones I have ordered a kit for. So I should have done this before I ordered the kit. I am now leaning towards replacing the lift pump with an electric pump. This is not something I wanted to do but I don't want to risk getting more diesel into the engine, I'm also not sure how good and durable I can make this pump be. So I will research replacing lift pumps with electric ones. Tips are welcome.

  9. Seems like forever since I updated this. I'll start with the 240. It has been a trooper. Not that you'd expect anything else from it. It did Shitefest '22 with such total competence that it's easy to totally forget it's a 34 year old car. I've never had such a comfortable drive down and up the M6, cruising at 70 with zero effort and doing around 35mpg. It was so good to meet everyone there, with the focus being on relaxing and socialising rather than stuffy adenoidal car shit that you'd get at any other car related event. Many approvals from me. Highlight was meeting @Sunny Jim's doggo of course. The trip did highlight a few things I really wanted to sort on the car. First, the radio never worked, acting like it had no power even though I'd traced the wiring back to the fusebox which seemed alright. I took the unit out and gave it 12V from a good battery and it fired right up. This got me checking the wiring again, scratching my head lots, and eventually giving in and running a new feed straight from the fusebox to the radio positive wire. It fired into life instantly.. grand! The wiper motor had been noisy ever since I got it running again, leaving me with that feeling that it's ready to shit itself as soon as the first downpour arrives. The motor itself worked OK but the bearing on the shaft was causing all the noise. I dropped this into a local bearing place and they gave me a replacement off the shelf for the princely sum of around £1.30. I also found that the case magnets were a little loose and were rattling around, occasionally coming out of alignment and catching on the stator and causing a nasty grinding sound. This was easy fixed with some araldite. I also found that it wasn't working particularly well on high speed when plugged back in, so I upgraded the wiring internally to a thicker gauge. Also, instead of relying of the shonky earth connection to the bulkhead, I added an extra earth straight to the battery using some solar cable. The difference is immense, which is a good thing as these motors are really difficult to come by. Next problem is a really wobbly idle which could get annoying when sitting at traffic lights. The fuelling had been set spot on, so it was time to fling parts at it. First up, new ignition leads, dizzy cap and rotor. An anomaly on the Euro Crap Parts website meant that K-Jet injectors were being sold for £15 each. Of course I blagged a set. A few days later they went back up to their usual price of £65 each. Finally, I decided enough was enough with the ridiculous stance. 40mm lowering springs versus brand new aftermarket GLT springs. There we go! Much better! After all this TLC it kindly decided to shit itself by bursting one of the shocks in less than 100 miles. I guess it didn't like being lowered much.. This happened on the day before it was booked to go to FOTU. Instead of trying to change shocks by the roadside somewhere, I decided to relegate it to the naughty corner and dig out the 205 for that instead..

  13. The 205 stuff. Summer started with a wee ned flinging a brick at it. I chased down the scrote and got some good photos of his ugly mug which were swiftly passed on to the police. The police were decent enough, but they're so underfunded and understaffed that I get the feeling this stuff goes on a lot without consequence. The fake-tanned mother of the ned stopped us in a shop a week later and gave us mouthfuls of abuse and threats from her financed A Class, so it's clear to see how the brat ended up the way he did. That event spurred the police into actually going and charging the little cretin and giving the mother an official warning, so hopefully that's the end of that. It clearly didn't like having a brick flung at it, as it decided to go into a fit of flashing its headlights, indicators and running the wipers constantly. Here's why. That and a few other earths were cleaned up and fixed, and the shonky positive terminal replaced. Next up it gained a habit of randomly dumping its coolant from THAT pipe in the driver's side wheel arch. Since it had been pressed into FOTU duty at short notice I replaced it with a bit of straight stainless at 8AM on the morning of departure. The stainless was the wrong size but we made it fit. It was then FOTU approved. A French convoy was created with @Lacquer Peel The A66 was buggered, so we took the A69 then all the back roads through the hills, where the 205 is right at home. I enjoyed every second of it. FOTU was great, easily the best 'official' car show I've been to and it was good to catch up with people from here, as well as the Scotoshite crew. I was really looking forward to taking the 240 down, but kind of glad I got a chance to really drive the 205 on a proper trip. I had lots of fun bombing it down all the lanes and back roads. Although I had plans to sell it, I think I may have actually bonded with it to the point I'll keep it for a bit longer. @davehedgehog31 and I did a bit of a trade and now I've got a Bosch fuel pump that will drink the veg. That'll be the next plan for this little nugget, then we'll see how things go.

    My MK1 espace problem.

It wasn't me, it was the previous owner. I sold it to him a few months ago, he took it out for some photos at the weekend as a final goodbye, dropped it off to me on Monday! Funnily enough he's also called Robin... They did indeed. The quadra system was good but unsure how strong it is. The viscous coupling in the middle is the achilles heel unfortunately. They cost about £1500 to have re-made, as the parts aren't available at all This weekend I fettled a lot: FIXED THE HEADLIGHT WASHERS OH GOD YES (video below) Fitted a head unit that works Changed cambelt and tensioner Changed power steering belt - Renault in their infinite wisdom decided to put it BEHIND the cambelt on a separate pulley. Incroyable. Changed alternator belt Changed dizzy cap and rotor arm Changed drivers brake caliper and carrier Skinned 3 knuckles changing the crank position sensor Changed air temp sensor Changed air filter, oil, oil filter Adjusted ticking valves Not all of it was necessary, mostly preventative I think it might need a clutch before next summer but that's a problem for another time. The blower motor is also seized and I'll need that for winter. But unfortunately to get at that I have to dismantle the entire dash and fascia, drop the steering column, then hope I have one's of 3 types of blower that were seemingly fitted at random throughout different years. Pray for me. VID_20220811_234926(0).mp4

  15. Right then Saab! Your turn. After a long lay up I’ve finally got round to booking this in for a fix. The air con compressor clutch seized and the bearings in the pulley appear to have gone wrong as it sounds like the jetsons car. I’ve been quoted £lotsamoney by the Saab specialist for replacement. So with it having been sat for a while I don’t want to spend lots on it only for the effects of standing to render it off the road again. So today it’s having a new non-aircon drive belt fitted to bypass the compressor. (yes I know I could do it myself, but thinking I will get round to it is the reason it’s been sat for over 6 months) and then I’ll press it back into daily duties I think. Loved driving it to the garage today… forgot just how much I like this car!

It was great we got the Saab 95 started but there is some more to do, we have a noise from the engine, fuel tank is out, no clutch and no brakes. Gaskets are ordered along with other parts so there is a fair bit to do. Clean fuel tank and refit. Change fuel pipe where appropriate. Take off rockers and check for oil in rockers Take off sump and check the oil pick up is not blocked Replace the water pump Take off all wheels and check condition of brakes Clean interior Refurbish clutch master cylinder and slave Fish and chip shop run!

  20. So... after getting it back from the welders I used it sparingly for a couple of years toying about with different stereos. Think I sold this one again as it didnt work that well but looked cool with the graphic eq. I decided to fit ISO blocks to all my stereos so I can swap them for shows etc. Pretty easy on the Escorts pov spec dash, you can just push them out from the back 🤪 Someone reversed into it and luckily some mates saw it. I got some cash off the guy to sort it out and managed to get two bumpers for it in the end. After that I put the new metal number plates under the bumper incase it happened again. I also found a guy who had wrote off his Escort and was selling all the spares. Got these original wheels which replaced the Capri ones. Then around 2016 I had the scuttle panel replaced and some rust touched up around the rear windows. Unfortunately (which has always been the case with this car) the body shop struggled to match the paint. Its never been the original Rosso Red so they did me a deal and flashed over the whole Car again. Unfortunately it lost its Popular stripes in the process and this is where it had to start living out side due to the Triumph Spitfire ... ... and me relocating to Crouch End, London. I loved this as it meant that I could go down to Ace Cafe regular and later on when we moved to West London go to loads of the West London Car meets. This is probably the Escorts peak. I entered it into Festival of the Unexceptional 2018 . I started doing a bit of maintenance at this point as it wasnt doing to well in the London traffic. Changed the Radiator, hoses, thermostat to try and get the temp to chill out about. It turns out a leak on the bottom of the carb didnt help. I also tried to track down the original garage at this point. No luck unfortunately apparently everyone who owns 'Southern Cross Garages LTD' is now gone and the Market Deeping branch where this Car came from is now a Co-Op. After I bought my Capri (told you we'd get back to that) which was a total fixer upper, I started getting braver with this one and did some well overdue maintenance. I did the tappets and long over due oil change. At this point i realised how much id neglected it and how important oil changes are. Since that I got an oil leak from the oil pump. Its behaving more now but shows how you have to do regular oil changes. Up next, renting it out for films, electrical problems, moving north and my old friend rust returns!

  21. So all fixed now with the 307. Plus new cam belt, water pump and gasket. Next: look at the grumbling wheel bearing. Then it will be good as new. And next, i have to collect my new car. Thats going to happen in the morning. I suppose this will become a collection thread in the morning.

  22. I also received confirmation today that this car has very high mileage. Is has a reconditioned engine. Which was put in a long time ago. And the text is in Swedish, which makes sense as the car has lived almost its entire life in the border areas with Sweden. And it tends to be cheaper to fix cars in Sweden than Norway. This is the tag on the engine block that is telling me this. All of the linkanges and more are verry worn and one linkage has fallen of now. The one on the left. But this is to be expected from a car that was most likely a taxi for most if not all of its first 10 years. And then had around 20 years as daily with different owners. But I would really like to know how many kilometers it has on it but we'll probably never know..

The horse has bolted. RR at least had its ladder and is the best of the three. Majorette Monte Carlo is a bit chunky. Seller also had a Mercedes which I already have and rather battered examples of Golf Mk1 and Escort Mk3/4 which I left behind. He managed to keep his cigarette going throughout the whole exchange. Drew a blank at a couple of other sales. 48. A few years ago I had a campsite booked, a pub meal booked, monday booked off work and was all set for a couple of nights away in the camper and a nice hike all day. I was really looking forward to it. Sunday lunch time, just before I set off I decided to take the back wheel off the Talbot for one reason or another. It was something inconsequential. The wheel was stuck onto the drum a bit, so I gave it a boot and it came off, taking the drum with it. When the drum came off, it pulled the shoes off the backplate and the fixing springs and clips all shot off across the carpark and one of the pistons on the wheel cylinder popped out, rolled across the floor and all the brake fluid just started pouring out of the hole. I just sat there, shaking my head watching it drain onto the floor for about ten minutes in silence.
